I have an infrared lamp above the cold side. Both my UTH (on the hot side) and heat lamp are on a thermostat and using the combination seems to give ideal conditions. So for my ball python it's about 80 degrees on the cold side and 90 on the hot. He's just a baby so this is in a 10 gallon, I imagine I'll have to find a different solution when I get something larger.

if it's only for extra heat in the daytime, you can put a low wattage heat bulb over the middle of the tank. That lamp must be turned off during night hours though. You can also use a ceramic heat emitter for this purpose if you need 24 hours of additional heat. Use a rheostat (lamp dimmer switch) to lower the heat output of the CHE as they will get too hot otherwise.

I find leopard geckos the single most boring reptile one can keep, and I say this as someone who keeps snakes, who are basically pet rocks. I kept two of them for 15 years, and fuck. I just could not get passionate about them. Handling them was dull, feeding them was dull, nothing was like WOW, A REPTILE, about them. What excites you guys about them? What's "cool" about leos? What am i missing?

Okay you need to decrease the frequency you are offering food by at last half. Sometimes snakes will develop a learned response to refusing food which extends their fasting period. Don't attempt to feed any more than once every 2 weeks until they have started eating again. Once eating, resume normal schedule. If prey is refused again, wait two weeks before another attempt.

yes, although they are far more likely to just run away if they feel threatened by something you're doing. most leo bites occur when leo mistakes a finger for an edible insect.
when a leo is mad at you to the point that it is thinking about biting, it will gape (hold its mouth wide open). if it thinks your finger is food, it will do the downward head tilt that they always do before they strike at an insect.

I offer food and monitor weight. Generally, it's pretty easy to tell when my ball python will eat, so instead of wasting food and offering every 7 days on the dot, I offer when he shows signs of wanting to eat. Sometimes he still refuses, but I've gotten better at deciphering his activities.
His fasts generally last 2-6 months, 4 missed meals isn't even enough to get worked up about.

How old are they? 5-6 days is really often to be feeding a snake. I personally do not feed any rodent-eating snake more often than every 7 days, because it takes 8-15 days for them to digest their meal. Their stomach lining swells up several times its normal size until they pass their food, then the lining continues to disintegrate down to normal or close to normal size for several days to a few weeks after. Putting them in a constant state of digestion is incredibly hard on their digestive system.
If your ball pythons are adults, they should be eating every 2 weeks.
Also, how big are your ball pythons and what size of prey are you feeding? Feeding frequency and prey size are some of the things that can cause them to go off of food.

Ha! I have had good success with two female cresties in a huge tank. It is a L36" x W18" x H18" I bought for ridiculously cheap. I had originally planned to put a snake in it but decided, since crested geckos do just fine with 18" of height, it should theoretically work fine as long as I put in tons of foliage to cut down on open space. The two girls are thriving in there. They use every inch of the space, too.

Yes i have two. They're pretty underrated as geckos go. Behaviour is similar to leos and african fat tails, maybe slightly more shy. Better climbers than the aforementioned but still primarily ground dwelling. Personality is kinda cat-like. They are fastidious self groomers. Always licking their toes and legs.
As they require 50-80% humidity, i set my tank up as half tile (warm side) and half coco fiber (cool side) with a little hill of excavator clay in the middle to divide the two. It works well.

Got another update.
He is still shedding some, gave him a warm bath and let him soak for about 20 minutes. That loosened some of his shed, and revealed how much he has been healing underneath his wounds.
There is one small remnant of scabbing, which was on the deepest part of his knife wound.
No regurgitation on his rat, or other complications. He's doing great!

This is only specific to him, I'm not sure it applies to others, but basically when he starts following movement I know he wants to eat. I'll walk into the room and -bam- he pokes his head out to watch me. I got to my retic's tub next to his and he inches out more and just stares.
If he doesn't want to eat he'll stay inside his hide. On the other hand, if he's out and about and ignores me, he won't eat. If he's out and about and zones in on my movement, he'll probably eat. Basically, he ignores stuff and he's gonna refuse, he tracks movement and he's ready to eat.
I went through 9 months of him being on the alert, going so far as striking the side of his tub every time I walked past, and then one day I offered a rat and it was a complete shut off. Didn't eat any for 3 months until he lost 13% of his weight and was dropping, so I resorted to live mice. 13% in only 3 months was a lot for him, so it got me worried. He went almost 8-9 months once without losing 10% of his weight, and after that 3 month fast he was the lightest he's ever been since he reached his current size: 1,198 grams, he's usually 1,380 grams.

Hopper is referring to when they start walking, I assume it's the same thing as rat pups. It's the size between fuzzy and weaned rats. You want a rat 20-30 grams for your bp (10-15% of weight). So that would be a rat pup/hopper.
Once it's one small rats you don't need to go any larger.

40g is too small. It would be fine as a juvenile but they grow up fast so you'd be changing to a bigger terrarium within a few months.

Walking around while holding a gecko will stress them out because of all the stuff moving around in their field of view. It's best to just sit still while handling them. Also, are you familiar with the correct way to hold them? They need to be able to freely walk from hand to hand. It you restrict their movement by holding on to their bodies, that will frighten them, cause them to want to bite, potentially precipitate a tail drop.

Yes they share a 20g (long) tank. Both are female. They have developed a social hierarchy where one seems to have first dibs on a desirable hide, even though they there are two identical hides on both warm and cool sides (4 hides total plus a big cork round in the middle).
You can handle pictus geckos in the same way as you would with leopard geckos. They will climb on your hands of their own volition once they trust you. Just because of their small size extra care must be taken; again in much the same way you would handle hatchling leopard geckos.

Well, if you feed them worms by hand, like one at a time, if they're truly hungry they won't wait long. They see that finger coming down and jump on it. It doesn't hurt at all though, it's just surprising, which is why you never let guests feed them, because a person whose not ready for a bite will jerk their hand away and if they gecko's already mid bite he/she is going to go flying. Better to have a small dish that they can get used to seeing their food placed in.

Sure. Basic leo setup that will be large enough for its entire life span:
20 gallon (long) tank. That is 30" x 12" x H12". This floor size is better than normal 20g tank because it gives you more room to establish the desired temp gradient from warm side to cool. Brand doesn't matter, although if you can get one that has front opening that's a lot easier to manage tank maintenance with.
Undertank heater. Zoo Med is fine. You want the one marked for 30-40 gallon tanks instead of the 10-20 gallon one. The 10-20 is really small on a 20g tank.
Hydrofarm thermostat (Amazon)
ceramic or slate tiles for floor coverage
various hides and food dishes. brand doesn't matter. for food and water, shallow glass bowls are best and. also check the small animal aisle in pet store for the little ceramic bowls there. those work really well for reptiles, better than any of the crap they sell for way too much money in the reptile specific aisle. Make a moist hide out of a plastic tupperare container.
Repashy Calcium Plus for your insect dusting and in-tank calcium dish. Just use a bottle cap for the in-tank dish for this.

That's not a red tail, it's a common boa. The boas referred to as red tails and common boas are two separate species now. You've got a Boa imperator aka common boa, not a Boa constrictor aka red tail.
Here's my retic, she's not my favorite, but she's gotten a cage upgrade. She's outgrown all her hides because retic growth rate, so all she's got is that fake plant right now, but I've got some plastic hides from Reptile Basics coming in that should be here by Tuesday. Either is fine. Both are not aggressive and both have simple care requirements. Hoggies can put on a big song and dance when they're upset; heavy breathing and hissing and flattening their necks in an amusing approximation of a cobra. But when it comes time to actually bite, they usually don't. In fact they're also known to fake strike, shooting their heads forward as all snakes do, but keeping their mouths closed, bumping in to you with their nose. And that is also fucking adorable.

You don't need to go as often as 5 days, 7 days is more than plenty. Just make sure to bump prey size as necessary. It takes snake 8-15 days to digest their food and return to a normal state, feeding them every 5 days doesn't give their body a rest and puts great strain on their systems.
Not sure about weights, but body tone looks good. Every individual snake grows at their own weight, so don't get hooked on "my snake isn't x weight or x length yet! they're stunted or behind in growth!" Pay more attention to body tone and what you're feeding than whether or not your snake is "average," because there is no average.

My landlady showed mine her neice while I was at work and my snake hissed at them through the glass.
He's never hissed at anyone before, aside from the first day I had him and he's still super relaxed around me.
So my Beardie has been asleep for almost a week straight.
I looked up why he could be digging in his sandless cage. He didn't want out because he was JUST out. The other option was brumation. I put a hand towel on him and that seemed to do the trick, he almost instantly went to sleep.
But I am worried, its been awhile and all he does is look at me on occasion before sleeping again. He never moves and I am worried about is health. I'm scared he'll starve.
One of the reasons I got a Beardie is I heard they were hardy. I take really good care of him bar when I am studying collage and he wants out. (I let him out later) its been warming up slightly, enough the heat is off but its still pretty cold in my room.
Is he okay? I know I just went over this logically but I am still worried. He's my first reptile.

Not usually. Although if your snek is not accustomed to say, seeing long hair or people moving in a different way than you usually do, they might get defensive. That was probably the case here.
My leopard gecko didn't eat for about 6 days, eventually looked like he needed to shed, started eating again but not nearly as much as usual, and now here we are about 3 weeks from the start of this and he still hasn't shed and still looks pre-shed opaque. The humidity is good, he uses his moist hide most of the day, and his temperatures are within range.
Is it okay for a shed to take this long? I just want my buddy to eat normally again and shed properly.

Yes we can only keep native species. The most commonly kept would have to be the species from the Antaresia genus which mostly reach about 1m. Carpet pythons are also really popular given the number of species that we can keep and the interesting subspecies and morph possibilities

If she can actually even get it down, I'd give her 2 weeks before you offer another meal. A big meal like that needs to be spaced out, and shouldn't be a regular thing. One large meal shouldn't be bad, but even just 3 meals like that in a row can make a big difference. Just make sure the next meal is properly-sized.

Hey guys. I need help.
My Bearded Dragon Eddie has been eating Dubia roaches for the entire time I've had him. His previous owner was handicapped and fed him largely by hand and his tank has a wood backing so I cannot leave them in there like I would like to do but I cannot afford a replacement yet. I have fed him dubia by hand as well and until a few months ago he has been fine; however, now I cannot get him to eat and I have noticed a little bit of blood on the inside of his mouth. I'm scared for my buddy and don't know what to do. He won't eat, I have managed to get him to eat one or two large roaches a week.

Yeah there's no way your ball python is full grown. A full grown bp will be over 1,000 grams, and the biggest get over 3,000 grams. Your ball python probably isn't even a year old.
At 202 grams, your ball should be eating rats 20-30 grams. So, that rat is definitely within the proper range, it isn't too big at all.
Now, if that weight is old that may no longer be true and a 20-27 gram rat may be too small. Give it 7-10 days after his meal, or whenever you see him poop, and weigh him again. Then, aim for rats 10-15% of his weight.
Once he hits 500 grams, he'll be big enough for small rats and can stay on smalls the rest of his life, however big he gets.

I know, I know. I'm working on it but thus far I've done everything correct. Proper UVB lighting, proper varied diet, treated water, and a 60 gal filter for a 29 gal tank. I do heavy water changes twice a month, small changes/cleanings once a week.
I even took her to the vet and honest to god he said that I took really good care of her. I don't know what I'm to do, she eats well and is healthy, I understand the shell's a bit wonky but I've done everything correct so far. I dunno. I love my turto, and she's very active and in good shape.
So about two weeks ago I went to a reptile convention to purchase my first chameleon from a breeder there. I found one I really liked but once I got him home, I realized he's actually quite thin. And now, in the last few days he's had these brown spots on both sides of his jaw appear. Tried to wipe them off in case it was just bug guts but they didn't come off. Can anyone explain what these are?

my painted turtle has similar shell issues, hes only about 2 inches in diameter and was rescued out of the wild. He's in a 55gal with other fish/shrimp to supplement food, but he;s fed well enough he doesn't go after them. lights, temp, cannister filter, and water changes, there honestly isn't much more i could do. I'm even breeding plants to put in there for him to eat. I really just think some midland painted turtles, especially out of the wild, have rougher shells.

I live in europe and i found a small (less than 1 year old) corn snake outside on my garden... This must've been someone's pet as it is a bloodred corn snake, it was completely chill and was triangle shaped due to lack of food i'm assuming so i took it inside gave it some tick medicine i had from my other snakes and a warm bath and now it's inside a small aquarium with a secure lid, some heating and i fed it 2 pinkies.
I was really suprised to find the snake especially since its so malnourished, it also has a kink in its tail

Just got a BP. Substrate = aspen shavings. Has one log that may be too big. Water bowl was too big for tank, switched with smaller one. Has 60 watt daylight bulb and 60 watt night time. I currently have no thermometers or humidity sensors. I've been spritzing the shavings and the log with distilled water 3 times a day. Will pick up thermometers tomorrow.
Question is, can I use one of those thermometer strips you usually use on aquarium? Can you use miracle gro peat moss? Am I doing OK?

No, the strips will only measure the surface temperature of the glass it's attached to. Which can be vastly different from the ambient temperature. You need a digital thermometer with a probe, or at the very least an alcohol thermometer for the time being.
You can't really tell from this photo, but it's likely it isn't skinny, babies generally look skinny. From the little I can see, it looks fairly well-rounded, but a photo not lighted by an IR bulb would help.
No you cannot use Miracle Grow peat moss, it is heavily treated with chemicals and fertilizers. You need to find a generic, non-fertilized peat moss. It needs to pretty much be straight up dirt, none of those white balls or anything else.

Forget the spraying. That won't raise the humidity for more than a few minutes especially with your heat lamps. Just have a water dish with a large surface area. Don't even need hygrometers really. Humidity doesn't have to be perfect. Don't have it soaking wet ever and don't let it the water bowl go empty. That's a better and more practical guideline to follow from my experience. Most common pet snakes can deal with a fluctuations in conditions fine unless you're trying to optimize breeding.

I'm the exact fucking opposite. The turbo jews at my lps will count down the the individual the exact number of fucking crickets. When you pick up 6+ dozen crickets at a time it's a nightmare. It's a dollar a dozen dude who gives a shit if it's plus or minus three crickets.
tip for cricket purchasers: if the store is the kind that has their crickets already out in deli containers on the shelf, always ask them to refill it from their breeding stock. This way you get crickets that are either alive or almost dead, as opposed to mostly almost dead or already dead.
Ideally you want a pet store that keeps their crickets in a large bin and will count them out for you from that, however a lot of pet stores don't do that.
Alright thought i would ask here. I'm kinda new to this. I'm trying to create a vivarium which is basically a living ecosystem in a tank. Im aware of overcrowding and mixing incompatible species together. I already have 7 hissing cockroaches, 5 confirmed males in a 32×20×12 inch tank. I have a couple plants thriving under the flourescent right now.
My question is i want to add something else, would green anoles be compatible with the hissing roaches? I dont care if the anoles end up eating nymphs but is there any other problems with mixing the two? I read one guy online did it and they just ignored each other. Im figuring if i make it so the anoles have enough hiding spots up above, the roaches would stay in their designated areas as well since they are usually hiding most the time anyway. Their environmental needs are very similiar and i would only keep a 2-3 anoles, the roaches i have, and then maybe order some springtails or isopods for cleanup in the vivarium.
Also i got my tank from my brother and the current hood light says all purpose flourescent? What does that mean? I would probably need to get a different basking light for the anoles right?

Suggestions:
Get him a bigger bowl. He needs to be able to completely fit in it to soak.
Get him a bigger hide. He needs to be able to feel 100% hidden. Those big plastic snake huts are ugly, but they really do the trick.
Try different size prey. Try leaving his prey in the cage freshly killed. Make sure his food is WARM. I often soak dead rats in hot water before feeding.
Snakes can go weeks without eating.
Also what are your temps and humidity? That looks pretty moist for that species. Make sure he doesn't have a clogged up nose with all that moisture.

hissing roaches are very large and omnivorous. so long as they are fed you should be fine and they will most likely leave the anoles alone. the other species are okay, but cant springtails become serious pests? i'd stick with isopods to control your bug population to reduce stress for the anoles.

That guy is retarded, you can use isopods, springtails, and if you like, buffalo beetles. I have all in with my anoles, roaches, snakes, and long tailed lizards in their respective enclosures. Springtails will not "stress" your anole. They live in the dirt, anoles live on branches, and springtails are super small.
I don't have hissers, but if they stay toward the bottom I don't see how they'd be an issue.

I have two beardies, both are half the size they should be. They were living together but they started mating so I split them up. They're each in their own viv now, the female's friendly as anything, eats like mad (If anything she's a little on the chubby side), but the male's the complete opposite. Hates to be touched, won't touch his food. We've been feeding him on a few mealworms daily just to keep him ticking over, but he won't eat his locusts or veg. He also won't eat while you're looking at him, it's like he's self conscious.
I'm considering getting some really small mice, just to see if he'd take those? He needs the protein, cause both of them are undersized.

i'd say buy a really small pinkie or two to test the waters. if he doesn't take it, keep him on crickets, cockroaches, or silkworms for a while. those are all relatively high-protein.
as for his stress, it might be due to a mix of living with the female for so long, and being in a new area. give him some time, and if he's still stressed out, try moving him further away from the female again.

They've been apart for quite a while, since around June last year. He's always been kinda antisocial, he just got worse when we split them up. I always joke about him being sexually frustrated.

hope it works out for you my dude. i have a chameleon who is just about the most finicky eater i have. he absolutely HATES tongs, and refuses to hunt on his own (food in his suspended feeding tray either crawls around the enclosure aimlessly, or accumulates), so i usually have to fumble with putting his food on the screen, or on a branch/leaf and pray he'll take it.
it's especially frustrating since he seems to really like super worms, and those are always the squirmiest and hardest to keep on a leaf. and they bites me fingers
