Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

I'm going for a half-gallon Walstad bowl. Probably going to be plant-only so I understand periodic fertilization will be necessary.

So far I have the bowl and some anubias and about an inch of water in there.

Any tips? I'm going to get some potting mix, maybe some sand/gravel and a light source soon.

Thinking of adding some meme balls and duckweed too.

I've heard that anubias can be tied to a lava rock or piece of driftwood. But can I just plant them with the roots in the gravel, leaving the rhizome above the gravel line?

I don't know parameters because it's in my father's tank, but anyone have any thoughts on why an angelfish (about four years old) would stop eating? He looks healthy otherwise, but has been lethargic lately, and I haven't seen him eat in a couple of days.

Yeah, that's fine.
Get a spath or some lucky bamboo to grow half-submerged, too.

It grows really fast and covers the surface, shading the rest of the plants, and it sticks to your hand and tracks all over your house and clogs the sink. It's really a pain in the ass. Water lettuce and frogbit are much easier to deal with.

I maintain a 8-10 thousand gallon reef tank for a private residence as well as 3 other smaller non SW systems. It's an awesome part time job and of the easist for a student like me.

Most of the equipment is what you find in a pool/hot tub at this scale. The protien skimmer is about as tall as a large household hot water heater tank.

I have to dive into the tank to clean the glass and frag/move corals.

>>
>>2067735
I wouldn't allow just any old random cover anything in your tank. It will suck up all the nutrients that your plants need. If you like the look of algae, get some marimo moss balls, slice them up, flatten them, thread some cotton string through them, then super glue the ends of the cotton string to the decorations you want.

Best of all, despite marimo moss actually being a species of freshwater algae, it is a super slow grower, so it won't infest your tank and smother everything else to death.

These are our fish.
IDK what they are. My gf's sister was going to flush them down the toilet so we took them.

The big fat goldfish looking thing had babies. She ate most of them but 2 survived. They're fighters.

I imagine the tank is a bit small. Also the filter is shit.

We'be had them 6 months and they've not died so I consider this a success

Danio rerio.
The aquarium is too small for them.
>>
>>2067848
How big do they need?
>>
>>2067852
A long 20 gal tank would be optimal.
They're schooling fish, they need to be in large groups and require a lot of space to swim freely.
Your tank looks very small, imo you should introduce a good quantity of real plants and replace the fish with inverts, like amano shrimp and snails.

Could throw in a few (10) dwarf puffers and/or scarlet badis in there to, for some species that will pick a territory and hang out there, while you have all your schools moving around their territories. I'd go with scarlet badis, their a lot of fun and beatiful. Can be hard to feed though...
>>
>>2067847
Take out all those tacky fake saltwater/spongebob shit. Get some live plants instead. Anubias, java fern, java moss, and marimo moss balls are all super easy. Hell, marimo moss balls are the easiest you can get. You literally just rotate them once a week when you do water changes so the part on the bottom doesn't get yucky. It's super easy to google basic instructions on how to care for them. Live plants are super important because they absorb the ammonia and other harmful things in fish urine and feces. Basically, it's the difference between living in a swimming pool, and living in a giant toilet that never gets flushed.

As for the aquarium lights the plants are going to need, once again super easy. Go to Walmart(or whatever your local equivalent is) and get some daylight CFL bulbs. Then get a desk lamp or two, I'm pretty sure they even have clip on ones that you can attach directly to the fish tank if it doesn't have a lid.

If you want a much better filter that is dirt cheap, then watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYyEHHmeZY0

Recently just lost an angelfish that I loved having in my aquarium. I tested the water and it concluded that I had no ammonia, nitrite, and 5ppm of nitrate, but my pH was at 7.8. The thing is; the pH has been consistent since Ive had the aquarium which is a total of two months now. How do I bring the pH down the right way? I understand adding chemicals would imbalance the natural levels of the aquarium so I was thinking of gradually adding spring water that has the pH of 6.3 to the tank as the water evaporates. But would I be able to get away with a 30% water change of straight spring water? Normally i do a 30% water change once a week with the tap water that has a pH of 7.9.

Currently inhabiting my 30g i have:
1 RTBS
2 Honey Gourami's
6 Cherry barbs
1 German Blue Ram
1 Electric Blue ram
4 Panda Cory's
1 Bamboo Shrimp
2 Nerite Snails
1 Ramshorn Snail

I worry about the pH for the rams' sake as well. Really would not like to see anymore fish go. Any help would be much appreciated.

if you dont mind the look of blackwater (acually yellowish brown) throw in some oak leaves, or beech leaves. it'll bring the ph down slowly and the rams will feel very at home in the tea stained water

just make sure any leaves you use are fully dead and dried. if you dont like the look of leave in your tank, either make a concentrated solution in a bucket or make a teabag by poking holes in a plastic bag and hanging it in the tank
heres an article on the subject: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/all-the-leaves-are-brown/

Anyone know if Bettas can be safely kept with Black Tetras?
The guy I got the three Tetras from said they're fine but as soon as I chucked the bag in the water the Betta is flaring his fins up at them in the bag.
Should I separate them? I got another tank with Guppies but I've heard that they wouldn't go together too well.

if your referring to black neons then i think you will be fine. usually bettas are really slow swimmers and the neons are real fast. im not a professional but i dont see your betta posing too much of a threat as long as there are a couple of them

I would recommend keeping 1 male to 2 females. That way, if his male Pearl is an asshole than the aggression would be distributed evenly between the two giving the ladies a break in between domestic violence

Still didn't stop my first male Pearl from murdering her two girlfriends. The 1M:1F pair I got after that were much better, but by then I was already tired of Pearls and wanted a smaller gourami so they could have more real estate in my 40 breeder

Went with 1 male and 2 female Honeys, and I already like them much better. The male is still very territorial and chases the girls outside his favorite spot, but his spot doesn't occupy 2/3s of the entire quarantine tank. Plus, I've never seen him continue chasing and nipping which is what my Pearls did, and he even lets them chill in his area every now and then

Try Sparkling Gouramis, they're tiny and sociable enough to be kept as a pair or maybe trio in a Spec V. Make sure to plant it densely

This is a design for a tank I am wanting to make.designing in 3ds max. Yes those are tubes connecting the tanks. They will be 20-30 gallons each.I want my fish to be able to swim into all of the tanks, and have terf wars.
>>
>>2068729
Ok, but how do you plan to actually build it.
>>
>>2068730
Put holes in tanks (hardest part)
Get 360 4x2 gallon tanks in between 4x 20 gallon tanks.
Seal them off (doable)
>>
>>2068729
>terf wars
What?
>>
>>2068734
If nothing else I can animate it working.
>>
>>2068735
They will fight to the death (or at least annoy each other then swim away)
>>
>>2068729
you might want to figure out a way to raise the walls on the tubes so your substrate doesn't fall to the bottom. also, good luck trying to clean/arrange/do anything to the lower tanks. might just want to make it horizontal only if you're insistent on the TUUUUBES.jpg, but otherwise it would probably be easier/cheaper to just buy a bigger tank
>>
>>2068740
This is much cooler than a normie big tank and I may make it horrizontal only if it gets too complicated to seal off the lower tanks.
>>
>>2068739

It's been a few years since I've been serious about the fishy business. So I started up again and I made a serious mistake with the filter I chose. I got an Aquaeon quiet flow and the pump quit after less than a week. I've only got a 20 gal and it's going to be planted anyway, so I don't need anything drastic like a canister. Any suggestions for a HOB filter that will actually work? Is there a better alternative to HOB that I just don't know about?

overwhelmingly best filters for smaller tanks are the fluval/hagen aquaclear series

How are they with noise? I have the tank in my bedroom and I'm ok with white noise while trying to fall asleep but there are some limits. The last time I had a tank I had a Penguin Biowheel HOB and that thing rattled and squeaked and I eventually had to move the aquarium to my kitchen.

I ordered em all from Planted Aquariums Central. I think I only paid about 50 bucks for all of em after shipping. And I love my little habrosus corys, when I saw em at my lfs I had to have em. I need help. I have no idea what sort of output my lights have, I didn't think to check because it initially wasn't planted. I have LEDs in the hood, and a second LED submersible strip.

So far anubias, java fern, and moss are all doing well. Watersprite and myrio are not doing well, but I'm tempted to say it's because they're fast-growers and my tank doesn't have enough waste to keep them healthy. Are there any other hardy low-light plants I can add, preferably something tall for the back, that's unlikely to die if my lights aren't great and my tank is clean? Dosing ferts 1-2x per week.

Right now I have an overstocked 20 gallon high with a bunch of meme fish I got from PetSmart. It is/was my first-ish tank, I had a 5g betta tank before that, but this was the first tank that I planted and got decent equipment for.

So now I want different fish but I don't have the space to really set up a large tank. (When I move out I'm looking to get something 100-200g.) Basically I want to experience different fish.

I'm moving everything except the dwarf gourami and the shrimp to the 20 long in my previous pics, and that will be a South American biome of sorts, and the 20 gallon high in my room will be a Southeat Asian biome.

It kind of works out because I think the tetra might be happier in the wider tank, and then neither tank will be overstocked.

Basically I'm an autist and I recently decided Asian fish don't go with South American fish, not for any /pol/ish reasons but some imaginary notion of aquatic "authenticity". You don't have to be like me, being OCD is a curse.

Huh. It's an estimation/planning tool. I don't think stocking is an exact science to begin with, and its data will never be vast enough to give you all of the information you need. It's just a starting point / reference. It's still a really useful tool.

Is that big rock on the left leaning against the tank wall? Isn't it supposed to be bad to do that? Like, you risk the tank wall cracking or some such?

But other than that, it looks great. If you would like some decorating advice, then I suggest get some java moss, a nice thick mat of it. Then thread some cotton string through it, and super glue the ends of the string to that big rock on the left, so the java moss eventually attaches to it. I would do it in a single thick vertical line going down the center facing out of the tank.

Then, when the java moss establishes itself on the rock, get a thick wide toothed come and gently comb it out every time you do a regular water change, this will make it nice and thick and luxurious. A perfect green shag carpet for shrimp or whatnot to graze/hide out in.

Your betta might even like resting on it, as well, if you make sure to add some on top.
>>
>>2068756
No, fish don't work like that. The only way it will work is if you make the tubes small enough that only guppy sized fish can fit through them, then get a couple of fish species too large to fit through the tubes, like angelfish.
>>
>>2068760

>Do you guys think these would have enough PAR for an aquarium 12inches deep for good plant growth?
It's not going to be as bright as a $100-200 fixture, I'm fairly confident in that. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, just don't try to grow high-light plants and expect rapid growth. On the upside, less algae.

So my boss wants me to set up a 55 gallon tank in the lobby at work since a customer complimented my tank in my office.
My tank is just a 10 gallon with a single male betta, a shit ton of marimo moss balls, and Asian decor.
I need stocking ideas since I've never really done anything outside of bettas before.
Boss hasn't given me a budget, but I want something low maintenance, stable, but still entertaining for customers.
>>
>>2069269
I recently set up a simple 60g saltwater tank in my office. Way understocked, so far I have three damsels, a clown and a dwarf angel.

I expect I'll get a royal gramma and then I'll be done. Maybe an anemone and some corals later on down the line.

but anyways, it's pretty low maintenance. I just change some water every week or two and empty my skimmer a couple times a week.

My budget is whatever I want though.
>>
>>2069269

I figured this is the best place to ask about aquatic frogs.

When I was little, my grandmother got me an aquatic frog to keep at her house. I believe it was an African Dwarf Frog.

I've had stuff to set up an aquarium sitting unused in my house for a couple months now and was considering getting fish, but I just remembered the frog I used to have and remembered how fascinating I found it. I love frogs and find them totes adorbs.

From what I'm reading, it seems they're pretty easy to take care of. My only worry is that my tank may be too big for them; from what I'm reading, they only need 5 gallons, but my tank is 10 gallons. Is this too big for the little frogs? I'll probably just get fish if it is, but I'd like to have those frogs again.

Also, the water in the city where I live is horribly chlorinated or something. You can clearly tell that the water is chemically treated when you drink it and it's so nasty to drink that I buy filtered water instead. I feel like if I set up a tank that I should use spring or filtered water because of how chemical-y the tap water is. I mean, I have a filter for the aquarium, but I'm so afraid to put any tap water in there; I even give my dogs and birds the filtered stuff.
>>
>>2069309
As long as the 10 gallon is a 10 gallon long and not a 10 gallon tall you'll be fine. That's actually a perfect size for a few ADFS. You could even keep shrimp in there too.
Mine dont bother the shrimp at all.

Seachem prime gets rid of the chlorine/chloramine in tap water and it's what I use.
>>
>>2069312
I forgot the tank had the measurements still on it until I just went to look.
It's 20"L x 10"W x 12"H
>>
>>2069314
That's a good size!

Take pictures if you do decide to get them, I love seeing progress images.
>>
>>2069175
Don't use bleach, instead, attach some thick wires/rope (thread them through the eye sockets and whatnot) then stake them down over an ants nest. The ants will pick them clean of every last trace of meat that could poison your tank.

Leave them over the ants nest for a good week or so. Then hang it somewhere outside where it will get full sunlight for another week.

Then it will be safe to put in your tank.

I went to the LFS today to get some windelov fern. The employee (god knows why) decided to give me a bag the size of my torso with over a gallon of water in it. Well, after sloshing the shit out of it on the drive home because "it's just plants lol," I looked at the bag when I got home and caught something moving in it out of the corner of my eye.
Surprise, I guess.

Hey guys, my 30 gal tank at the moment is stocked with 10 ember tetras, 10 neons and 15-20 shrimp. I'm planning on getting 2 more schools of 10 fish (probably endlers and harlequin rasbora) as well as 5 Otos and 5 dwarf cories. I'd like some type of slightly larger (probably around betta size) "centrepiece" fish. The only problem is I don't know which ones won't massacre my shrimp. I know gourami are out as they demolish shrimp populations. What species do you guys recommend and how many of them?

There's not really such thing as a "too big" tank.
Also, just buy a dechlorinator from your local LFS or pet shop.

Don't buy "organic natural herb remedy vegan gluten-free aloe vera" dechlorinator shit though, I used it once and it killed all of my cories and laoches, just buy straight up sodium thiosulfate based stuff.

Boraras spp. would be better suited to the 5 gallon than neons or harlequins, if you can find some, but a 10 gallon with harlequins would be better for all animals involved, in my opinion.

Does he want a tropical community tank specifically? You could get a single medium-large cichlid (ie. Jack Dempsey) and it'd be the office wet pet.

Betta sororities offer no advantage whatsoever to the fish, they're only done for the viewer's pleasure, and they're generally unpredictableat best. You're far better off getting sparkling gourami or something if you want a group. Or a single betta. Or an actually schooling fish.
