the taste you describe does sound like mold though.

it's pretty spicy, bitter, earthy. To me it tastes like soil but much stronger. Probably it tastes so strong so strong so we don't eat it. We evolved to find the taste unpleasant.

it's probably not going to kill you or anything, but it's not good for you either.
