Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Anyway a friend has been trying to throw his Oscar in a lake here in Michigan. I keep stopping him but today the faggot flushed it. At least I'm getting his tank.

good meme. You bought them, funding the business. Since you bought them, they will purchase more and so on. Now your obligated to go back when they get more and buy them, and so on and so on to "save" them all. I really don't understand your mindset. do you just need to play the hero to feel good? Why couldn't have just purchased them and put them in your tank without all the self righteous bullshit

ps. hope your tank is healthy, because chances are they are carrying a shit ton of diseases, and you don't seem like one to quarantine fish because a small bare bottom tank is "cruel"

It's completely empty, the bottom plate of glass cracked and dumped all the water on the floor a few years back.

I still haven't decided if I want to take it all down and rebuild it with heavier bottom glass or just seal the bottom and hope the sides don't break. It's kindof a tossup. I had it up and running for 7 years before it broke though, so I'm not really sure I trust anything I make anymore.
>>
>>2051416
>I'd get a big eel for it, if i had a spare 1000g sitting around :) lol
If I fix it it'll probably be for a pair of bamboo sharks. Just to see what I can learn from keeping them.

what kind of eel would you get?

A friend recommended a fish tank with a led for my room to help me sleep, so I'm getting pic related.

Depends on gallons and dimension. Could do a neat little planted tank with a few shrimp and snail that doesn't get fuckhuge and reproduce like a dick head.
>>
>>2051452
Bad idea, you can get a tank twice that size for the exact same price.

>get a five to ten gallon tank
>throw just enough sand on the bottom to cover the glass
>get three or four marimo moss balls and rotate them once a week
>get some soft fake plants that wont shred up your fish and attach some java moss to the fake plants with either cotton string or super glue
>cause fuck super expensive real rocks and wood
>get desk lamp and put CFL bulb in it for the marimo moss and java moss
>make DIY filter with airstone
>cycle tank so fish don't die from ammonia burns due to swimming in their own shit and piss
>buy fish
>profit

Here's some links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrLYm-ZDGLw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYyEHHmeZY0

All in all, if you follow my advice your tank and everything that goes into it will most likely cost less than the fish themselves.
>>
for each water change i do, should i keep adding aquarium salt to account for the water i took out? or should i do tht only once a month or so? to me adding salt every time seems a bit excessive

If i were you, I'd fill it with freshwater, buy 30+ decent quality red cherry shrimp (berried if you can), let the tank run for 5-6 months til you have a population of several thousand shrimps, then put some largish predator like a puffer or something, and see if the shrimp population can't sustain him.

last puffer I had ate like a pig. I don't see any number of shrimp keeping one alive. They just eat all day erry day.
>>
>>2051538
Thats what hopefully your sump can help with. you do have a sump on the behemoth, right? Hell, i guess i didn't think about it, but you could even do it with some crayfish, a huge population of crays could sustain a puffer
>>
>>2051540
Water quality would be a pretty tough situation though with a puffer having full access to that many crays
>>
>>2051540
yeah, it's got a 300g sump which I'd like to upgrade to a 1000g insulated underground cistern.

crays would be the way to go I think.
>>
>>2051534
It is going to be just as much effort with a 3 gallon. Even more so, the smaller the tank, the more extreme the effect any chance has on the inhabitants. A single drop of temperature in a 3 gallon would kill all fish that the same species could shrug off in a 5 to 10 gallon.

You're going to have to watch a 3 gallon like a hawk 24/7. It will be a horrible chore if you aren't a hardcore hobbyest who genuinely loves keeping aquariums.

While with a 5 to 10 gallon tank you set it all up properly the first time, then sit back and enjoy it. Plus, it will be a boatload cheaper in the long run.
>>
>>2051545
so the system is 1300g total? Damn. Yea, I'd do crays and like Mbu puffer or something. You could easily just keep the crays in your 300g sump to breed, and pull one or two out and toss them in the display every week or so
>>
>>2051548
and then get a large freshwater eel too, just to round off the tank. It'd be pretty neat having a tank with a football sized Mbu puffer and a 3 foot tire track eel

>so the system is 1300g total?
not really.
the tank itself is a bit over 700g, I just call it 1000g because the system holds that plus.

It's an odd size though, I just bought the largest glass that I could get down my basement stairs without knocking out a wall. I've never actually measured how much it holds.
>>
>>2051538
shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. There’s shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That, that’s about it.
>>
>>2051552
Still a large system either way lmao. A 1,000g sump would be sick though. That tank would be insanely stable. You could also just turn it into a fantastic reef. Get some nice cheap LED lighting over that thing, and youll have some nice montipora shelves in no time

I was previously running 4 400w halides with 8 long actinic tubes.

It was a stunning reef. If you have the chance, do it. Take a private tour if you can, I was with a big group, and they were all ready to head back after like 30 minutes, and I was just not ready to go yet. I just loved free diving down to the 30ft deep reefs and checkin out the eels and everything.. just.... damn. I honestly think that I'm going to spend a year of my life just bumming around hawaii. Saw so many people there that just toss beds in the back of their trucks, and sleep in their trunks on the beach, wake up, fish, eat, swim/surf, and work here and there, and live like that their entire lives

I think you and I might have discussed that before. That's my retirement plan as well, but I figure on buying a condo on the big island instead of living in the truck. They're cracking down on the beach campers quite a bit lately.

It's beautiful there. I figure I'll drown one day from a double wave hold down or something. I survived one in '09 that almost got me. A set of 20 foot waves in a shallow rocky bottom. Scared the shit out of me but I still go back.
>>
>>2051531
It doesn't. It can weaken certain bacteria and parasites, but your fishes'immune systems should be strong enough on their own if they're healthy. Salt also gives a lot of fish a hard time.

If you're keeping something like mollies or African cichlids, they don't mind the salt, though.
>>
>>2051627
Very possible lol. If I was going to retire there I would definitely get a decent place, I just want to go bum it for a year sometime between this last semester of college and whenever I actually settle down. The people there were so nice too, it's just hard not to love the place. Only issue is the cost of food, but if i lived there i'd have my own year round garden

Yes, but no matter what you do, or what you put in it, make absolutely certain that you have some kind of filter with a sponge in it up and running first and foremost. Then allow the tank/water to cycle properly. Basically, what cycling is, is allowing the porous material of the sponge to become colonized with extremely beneficial bacteria that breaks down ammonia and other harmful ingredients in the water that fish produce with their urine and feces.

Without this colony of beneficial bacteria, your fish will all die. The ammonia will burn their gills and they will suffocate since they breathe with their gills.

There are fish that can survive in a tank that hasn't been cycled properly, such as bettas. Bettas can survive due to having a labyrinth organ that makes them "air breathers".

So, in essence, once you have poured the water (make sure you use a dechlorinator on any water you put in your tank, or put it in a pitcher and let it sit out over night) into the tank, you can add a single betta right away, and then the tank will cycle. But do NOT add any other living creatures until after the tank cycles properly.

If you do choose to buy a betta then you will need broad leaf plants that grow semi tall, or at least a fake plastic plant that is soft enough that it won't shred his fins. Male bettas need something to lay on when they need to take a break dragging those huge fins around. If they try to rest on the ground they will end up clogging their gills with all kinds of nasty stuff.

Having live plants will also help, because the plants will not only help oxygenate the water, but also "eat" a lot of the bad stuff like ammonia.

I previously mentioned marimo moss and java moss because those are the two easiest plants you can get, do not require super concentrated bright lights, and you do not have to plant them. Just chuck the marimo moss balls in on the ground, and tie/superglue the java moss to whatever object you want.

Also, if that tank doesn't come with a sponge filter in it, you can simply go to any store, buy a kitchen sponge, cut out the spongy material, and simply jam it in either the intake or out take. This will also help prevent any fish you have from getting sucked into the filter and killed.

And the plants can go into the tank at any time you want, the plants themselves couldn't care less if it is cycled or not. In fact, they can help speed up the cycling process.

Don't buy fish from them. They're not meant to be selling this sort of product and you just gave money to someone else rather than a good aquarium store that could actually use your' money.
>>
>>2051697
it would but that much plywood would have to be two sheets, so the seam might be a problem. Also plywood will bend under that much weight. It's gotta hold about 5 tons.

I'll probably just put silicone over the bottom, then a layer of cloth soaked in more silicone, and then a final top layer of even more silicone. Just rubberize the whole bottom.

the only part that worries me is the sides, I don't know how well they're supported since the glass they're sitting on is cracked. I don't know if it matters though.

Hey guys I want some advice. My family are moving house this year around September. I've been keeping fish and shrimp for 3 months (I'm the guy with the minnows and shrimp) and I've decided I want a proper tank. My idea is an 800 Litre planted discus community. I was going to dirt bellow the sand for growth. For a tank that large I know for a fact I want 15 discus. As well as them the only fish I know I want for sure is 6 khuli loach and 10 ottocinculus. I'd like some cories, a betta 100+ schooling fish (danio, tetras, rasboras etc) and something else for the top water layer. I want to know what are my best stocking options? What cories are recommended? What tetras/rasboras and how many of each kind? What too layer fish can actually tolerate the temperature Discus need? Long or short finned betta? Basically I want advice. Because if I can get an idea of what I want I can start saving with my job towards it as I can price everything at my LFS.

for reference here's what the bottom looks like now.

the glass is 3/4 inch untempered. It didn't really shatter, it just got 10 or so long cracks mostly radiating from the center where it's drilled for the overflow.

I'm thinking I can probably just pour epoxy resin or silicone right over the top of it. The silicone seems like the better choice because it's flexible if the glass breaks more.

Probably the main thing I'd do is put less live rock in though. Get rid of the deep sand bed and make most of the decoration out of foam instead of rock and concrete.
>>
>>2051708
with discus you mostly want slow tankmates.
because discus are relatively slow swimmers at feeding time, and if they're in with fast tankmates they may not get any food.

the other option is to make all their tank mates much smaller than the discus and then feed them a larger food.

anyways, I've kept discus with plecos, rams, dwarf gouramis, tetras, and a betta.
my favorite look is just discus and a few hundred neon tetras. The discus will eat a few tetras every now and then though.
>>
>>2051721
That's why I was thinking of mostly larger tetras though, probably cardinals, emperors and rummys. I think neons and embers are a bit small
>>
>>2051725
cardinals aren't usually much bigger than neons.

either way, some discus will nip fins on tankmates. They'll also probably chase each other around if they're different strains, or if it's breeding time. Aggression should be cut down by having so many. Also the small schooling fish should keep the discus distracted a bit. They can be pretty mean sometimes.

I have a stable 55g planted freshwater tank as my primary but yesterday I decided to put my 5g I had laying around to use and went down to the ocean (okinawan coast) and collected the clearest saltwater and cleanest sand you've ever seen along with a few small hermit crabs and one sea cucumber. The tank had been cycling with a small tetra filter for a couple weeks and had a couple Guppies I transferred to my 55g. I'm keeping the temp around 25c and the hermit crabs seem to be doing fine after a day of observation. I'm wondering when it would be OK to drop in a couple small fishes from my LFS or if I should just go net a reef at the shoreline of my house. Wouldn't the ocean water/sand already have the appropriate bacteria? Would fish raised from synthetic saltwater tanks be adversely affected by my "natural" setup? Thanks guys
>>
>>2051739
Oscar is small and leaves my Guppies and Angel fish alone. But he always had a problem with my arowana
>>
>>2051750
sea water is generally fine.
fish kept in synthetic salt do fine in ocean water. Most of them came from the ocean to begin with.
The bacteria in your cycled filter won't survive the change. it needs to cycle with new, different bacteria.
there is very little bacteria in ocean sand. the ocean is very poor in nutrients. not a lot of bacteria most places.
5g is probably too small for fish unless you want to be changing water every week.
>>
>>2051760
Thanks for the information. I do weekly water changes with my 55g as it is so this 5g would be nbd. Plus, NSW is stupid easy for me to collect. I'm thinking just a couple little guys for the tank
What would /an/ reccomend?
>>
>>2051762
personally I like tank-bred ocellaris for that size.

they're really hardy and do well in small tanks.

a firefish would be cool too, but they're a lot more delicate. Or like you said you could go catch something. research what's tiny and local.
>>
I managed to make a positive impact on a store by saving an axolotl. One big fucker and a small one were in the same tank. Both seriously underweight. I had one of the employees come over and showed them the axolotl and told them that this was quite cruel. I took out about 3 years worth of anger out on that poor employee and she promised to feed them better. Every time I've been by, I've been asked to show pictures of the axolotl and we're on a good tone. They often ask me to take a look at their reptiles and ask me for tips. I have become google to them.
>>
>>2051762
You can't really keep anything in a tank that sized unfortunately. Maybe a blue neon goby, or other EXTREMELY small fish. I think clowns would be out of the question even, as clowns do get large. If you got a 10g that would significantly improve the fish you can keep. If I were you though, and had access to NSW, I would have as large of a tank as I possibly could keep
>>
>>2051708
That's extremely ambitious for someone who has only been keeping fish for 3 months, and minnows at that. I would wait for quite awhile. Especially if you think you can stock an 800l with 15 discus and 100+ schooling fish, your not experienced enough for that level of tank. Discus can be very hard to maintain
>>
>>2051649
Pygmies by far. Their like half the size, so you can have double the fun!! And plus you can always get a single larger species, and hopefully all of them just chill together
>>
>>2051568
My understanding was that they tend not to do that because who knows what diseases fish that have been in a home aquarium might have. They could wipe out an entire tank doing some shit like that.

I sincerely hope they don't just dump people's fish back in there.

>Posted this in the other thread figured I would post it here too

Trying to find a decent starter kit to get into having a couple of fish, but I'm just striking out. After looking online I decided to get the Aqua Culture LED 5 gallon aquarium, but when I opened the box the tank was just disgusting. The glass panes weren't flush and they just mashed glue all over the inside seems.

Then I went with my second tank choice of the Tetra 3 gallon cube. Turns out the plastic on it gave a fun house mirror impression when looking in from certain angles and it simply looked like trashy plastic.

Now I come to /an/ with the questions,

I'm looking to spend 100 dollars total to set up an aquarium. This includes the tank and all parts associated with it. Fish excluded.

I'm looking for a tank that is big enough to be noticeable, small enough to not be excessive, and smooth enough to not be tacky. My main concern after the first two tanks I got is quality.

I really don't want a lot of fish just enough to make the fish happy and/or not lonely. I also only want to do fresh water because I'm a casual and it looks like less hassle.

As for the questions, does /an/ know of a good starter kit for my requirements or simply a good tank that I can start from? Would prefer to shop online unless by lucky chance your recommendation is sold at Walmart or Big Buddies BBQ & Beer because those are my local choices.

there you got the guys that invented the equipment and pioneered the techniques actually hanging out and explaining stuff to you.

Numerous PhD researchers on fish and inverts willing to spend time talking about the animals they study and how to keep them.

if someone pipes up with bad advice it's invariably countered in an impersonal manner, usually by several people that know what they're talking about.

Only thing I don't like about it is it's really stiff and formal, and unless you happen to be an expert at something you probably don't have much to offer there.

Well, damn.
Aqueon aquariums are usually pretty good from what I've seen. The tanks themselves are manufactured by AGA, which iirc also makes the tanks for AquaCulture.
Unfortunately most other kits in your price range are 5 gallons or less, which basically limits you to a betta as far as stock.

Walmart sells 10 gallon tanks a la carte for $15-ish, right? Next time you're there see if any of those look okay and then you can buy the rest online.

I think you're right.. But I also have no idea how it got there.
>>
>>2052525
Maybe it was packed in with the gravel by accident and you just never noticed it?
>>
So an anubias of mine just flowered, is there anything I should know about this?
>>
>>2052514
What's wrong with their heaters? I stole one from petco today and it's keeping my tank at 79.2 degrees.

So my week and a half old guppies have been showing signs of ick for half their lives. I turned the heater up to 86 today and they seem happier. The white spots are not gone though.

Are they unlikely to survive?

I also put quite a lot of Celtic sea salt into the tank yesterday. Sg was at .004. Now when I test there is so little salinity the reader hardly recognized it. Tested multiple times after disturbing the water and everything.

Pls help!

The preset Tetra heaters have a reputation for getting stuck on and overheating the water.
>>
>>2052533
Only possible way really. Unless one of the fish from the store ate it and passed it or threw it up. I definitely didn't put any tiny muscles/clams in there
>>
>>2052552
Fuck it. I got a digital thermometer that I check multiple times a day. Ill keep an eye.

Don't most plants that flower die off once the flowering process is finished?
>>
>>2052534
Enjoy the bloom while it lasts underwater.

>>2052574
Not all plants do that. My anubias have flowered several times over a couple of years and they're still growing.

I fucking love king beta's!

That dude seems like a rare color since its almost purple.
>>
>>2052583
Yes he's a real dark purple. The bowl he was in was full of shit so I took him. He stood out to me the first time I seen him but everyone with me kept calling him ugly. So I went the next day and got him. I'm not really a betta guy either but he spoke to me. Now happy as shit in a 30 gallon planted with a bristlenose and school of emerald corys

>Have fluval e series heater
>Have filter output zooming by the heater
>Still complains of low flow all the time

So I've been observing my skunk loaches behavior in my community tank. The smaller one seems to have become non-aggressive and will chill around my Corie's from time to time but still prefers to swim around the tank alone. When he feeds he feeds alongside other fish and doesn't seem to compete for food.

The larger one has found a little hiding spot in a large piece of driftwood and almost never leaves it, even to feed.

The only problem with them is that my Chinese algae eater bully's the smaller one occasionally.

Thoughts?

Who does?

Get rid of the CAE. They're pretty useless anyway.

Does this look right /AQ/? I don't know something seems off about it. This will be my first aquarium since I was a kid and back then I kind of just YOLO'd it. I want my fish to have a decent environment. I know there is really nothing inside it right now, but does it look right?
>>

Need some plants and possibly a rock cave
>>
>>2052582
I wouldn't tolerate hers though, because she only keeps horrible inbred goldfish.
>>
>>2052722
Get a black background, the wire jungle behind the tank is very distracting.
>>
>>2052722
Bury the airline, get a background and some decor. At least like three fake plants and a cave. If you want real plants you'll need a new hood. This one is cheap and I think it's the right size for your tank.

You might have some trouble with plants with pea gravel alone, it's just not the best medium for roots or nutrient uptake in my experience, and it's really easy to uproot plants that are rooted in gravel.

You can try a Walstad tank where you put down a layer of soil or potting mix and layer pea gravel on top.

To >>2052763's point, some tall-growing background plants would help obscure the electronics.

Basically all I see are a lot of wires and I don't even know what I'm looking at. I admire your ambition though, keep asking questions.

Thats why you get her a puffer. Bitches love puffer fish. Nothing cuter than those big round eyes and amazing personality. You just have to explain to them that making them puff up can be extremely dangerous. And with time, that glorious puffer will devour her goldfish
>>
>>2052762
The funny part is she doesn't believe hers aren't inbred or fucked up
>>
>>2052762
Fuck I mean she thinks her fish aren't inbred and over genetically modified. I hope she enjoys there shortened life span.

Hey guys. I'm doing a fishless cycle (inb4 memes) for the first time. My ammonia gets down to about like .10ppm after 24 hours. It's yellow but more neon than piss. Nitrites are sticking to about 4ppm no matter what.

What do I do? My tank is almost 40 days old.
>>
>>2052836
Try doing some smallish water changes and see of that helps. I don't know the explanation behind it, but I've seen people who were stuck before and for whatever reason the water changes made it finish cycling.
>>
>>2052839
How soon will I know? Should I restore ammonia to 3ppm immediately after?
>>
>>2052836
>It's yellow but more neon than piss.
please tell me you're pissing in your tank?
somebody had to fall for that.
>>
I want another (and bigger!) tank.

Should I get one?
>>
>>2052859
If you have time and space for it, yes.
>>
>>2052859
Ofcourse.

hey /ag/ my black ghost knife fish got himself stuck in a clump of plants in my aquarium. i managed to get him out and into a bucket and he has some fins ripped and some light scratches that im afraid could get infected, but i cant treat him with regular antibiotics because hes a scaleless fish and it can cause serious problems. any suggestions on how to prevent this guy from getting bacteria/ fungus?
>>
>>2052863
Time? Yes
Space? Not so much.
>>
>>2052881
Eh, you'll figure it out. Go get'em!
>>
>>2052836

>I've seen people who were stuck before and for whatever reason the water changes made it finish cycling.
I can corroborate this anecdote.
>>
>>2052876
Cleanliness, slightly upped temps, more aeration.
It works well if you don't doubt it. Also, oak leaves can help too, just enough for a slight tint, and slowly added for no
PH shock.
>>
>>2052891
Aww yeah!
>>
>>2052835
Yeah but she's pretty fuckable.
