Little baby Venus Flytraps. Looks like the bigger one is starting to form a head. Little one is holding on. Keeping them in an aquarium in their little starter pots. Cute as fuck.

Simple setup. Table is near a vent so I have to keep the aquarium sprayed down with distilled water. It's cold outside mane.
>>
Bought these babies as death cubes. Lowes sells them as a kit. So excuse me if they look a little unhealthy. They were sealed in baggies. Doing my best.

I've bought those little death cubes before, but you're treating them better than I did. Unfortunately, when I moved, I had to get rid of them all because of customs. I ended up getting two sarrs, two nepenthes, and one venus. I kept them wet and gave them some blended up sphagnum moss/perlite mix for their bed. Left them outside all day, so they ate plenty of bugs and got a pretty decent amount of sun. Only have a picture of my traps. Really wish I could have kept those fuckers. Screw customs.

I'm gonna get more in the future.

Aw that blows. Really falling in love with my babies. I'm going to name them when they're older. And I haven't done all that much with their care. Read up on them and decided to keep them in an aquarium this winter. Bought the least nutrient rich soil at Walmart. Water them to keep moist. >pic is of ingredients

Hope you get some this spring because they seem to be worth it. For me, this is a very good experience since this is my first time taking care of plants on my own.
>>
>>2045029
Very pretty plant you got there. A little wilted. But they seem to be hardy.
>>
>>2045049
I think I took that picture just before they went into dormancy. After I moved them into a bigger pot, it exploded. I ended up with three total plants from my initial one and some of the traps were almost at big as the B-52's. I left two of the plants with a kid that used to come by my house to feed them bugs he found, so I can hope that the little guy's still living on. I made sure to give his parents instructions on how to care for it too.

Naming them is part of the fun. I had names for all of them. I don't know how that soil will work for you, but wishing you the best of luck. I've had great experience from just buying long-fibered sphagnum moss and tossing it into a blender after soaking/rinsing it. And I do plan on starting again, but I will have to be more careful considering that Japan's got a different climate than California. I don't think I can just leave them outside all year anymore.

Also, if you're interested, look up Natch Greyes. He's a blogger that mostly caters to Nepenthes and Sarrs, but he put out a great book that talking about raising all carnivorous plants.

Oh, forgot to add that I mix sphagum moss half and half with the soil. The spgagum moss came with the kit and it seemed smart. Every other soil I've seen has nutrients, this was the best I could do. And yes, will do. I love a good read.

Can I feed my plant the bodies of my enemies?

If I stick one of my hands with these, then what happens next?
>>
>>2046556
If your enemies are insects. They don't do well eating normal meat. Too much nitrate.

>>2046808
Nothing. The traps aren't big enough to fit in anyway. They don't have spikes, the 'teeth' mainly act like prison bars.
>>
I got seeds for these as a gift some years ago and they've sitting in my closet inside the package since. Can I still plant them? I don't know anything about seeds. or plants.
>>
>>2046808
>>2046839

Closing the trap takes a lot of energy and a snapper can only snap a few times before dying off.
Finger in it is killing your plant, wasting its energy.

The snapper closes. There doesnt happen "nothing"

Appreciate the feedback,I'm saying stupid questions like this because I saw a video of a Venus Flytrap on Encarta when I was a kid.

I then watch some videos for research, and holy fuck they're weak and slow.

I thought they're like bear traps in which they snap hard that they pierce our fingers and their "teeth" are like sharp spikes, you know, the sharp chitin/keratin material that they have.
>>
>>2048087
I hope this is bait
>>
>>2047539
Probably. You could try to germinate them.
>>
>>2048087

They're digesting soft bugs...not a fucking bear.
>>
I'm thinking of getting a pitcher plant, how difficult are they to keep?
>>
>>2048773
I've heard of corn growing in fields of soy years after they were planted. Plants can be weird. It's not a guarantee that they will germinate but it wouldn't hurt to try. Use distilled water on them because tap water or well water might have nutrients that can kill them. VFT do well without any nutrients in their soil. I would put the seeds in a clear baggie with some distilled water and place them on a window sill to see if they pop out of the seed casings. If it does work just simply drop them in some peat moss or spgagum moss in a plastic pot mix half and half with nutrient poor substrate.
>>
>>2048776
Not very. Just make sure you look online so you buy the right soil. I mentioned my soil here >>2045212 You would just have to was your blender well afterwards.

Pitcher plants can even do well with some minor fertilization. But also, what kind of 'pitcher' plant are you looking at? Nepenthes or saracenia? Because they are very different in what they can handle.

>>2048775
Also, they don't really digest the hard shell of the bug. They just released enzymes that eat holes into the shell so they can turn the inside into a digestible juice.

My hybrid sarracenia pot. The one in the left is the hardiest plat I've ever had and grows very fast. Keeping an eye on it.
>>
>>2049065
That is fucking awesome
>>
>>2048913

I'm looking at Sarracenia

I'm planning on making an artificial wetland in a glass terrarium I have. Maybe a nice bog or swamp. I read Sarracenia grows in spaghum bogs and was thinking of doing that. I want to have some good wetlands plants in there too to clean and filter the water. A self-sustaining ecosystem, for the most part.
>>
So...some dumb shit worker at Lowes kept telling me to go for the Miracle Grow peat moss and potting soil for my VFTs. "Oh you want sand for a VFT? We have some play sand over here. Its cheaper." "This stuff (MiracleGro) will make it grow faster and stronger than that sand you want." "No you don't have to rinse it." "You can use tap water." My fucking word.

I have a friend who did that, he used a pond to make a bog garden. Shit is neat. Anyway don't use an aquarium indoors, they require a lot of sunlight and a dormancy period.

Unfortunately, almost no one that works at lowes knows anything about carnivorous plants. They're usually pretty knowledgeable about normal plants, but they since they don't know anything about the carnivores they just lump them in with the other plants. But, good on you for doing your research before you bought your new pet.
