This stick was on a tree growing in the woods near my house. The bark is pretty easy to peel off (kinda like paperbark), the stick itself is mostly hollow, save for the blockage in one of the following pictures. any ideas as to what this is?

and lastly, here is a better view of the bark. By the way, i live in northern Alabama, if that helps.

Ive seen it before, use to play with it a lot. The bark is really slimy and easy to peel. It grows really fast too, like a weed

not sure what it is, but defintely not a true tree. some kind of woody plant.
>>
What region are you from? That plays a big role in identification.
Is it growing by water? Not? Shaded? Not?
Please provide more information. Or you can contact a local arborist. If you took a better picture of bark, or a picture of foliage.

Looks like a pokeweed stem. No tree is that pithy in.the middle, even.sumac.
>>
That's sumac.

OP here!

>What region are you from?
North Alabama
>Is it growing by water?
It's about 40 feet from a drainage ditch for rain water, so "sometimes it's close to water"
>Shaded?
I only have secondhand knowledge of it, but supposedly it's in the woods so I guess it's shaded.

I'm leaning toward this too, now that you mention it.

OP here with an update. I have seen the alleged "tree" now that it's not cold as shit here. A few pictures incoming. First, a better view of the bark.

This is a shot under the bark. The inside smells like that scent ladybugs give off when threatened.
