Rabbits are worthless. Mine was litter trained for years and all of a sudden pissing and shutting everywhere. Vet check ups are always fine and nothing has changed in my house for years. Same cat, same me, same everything. It won't potty train anymore and I'm resenting him more and more everyday.

I was looking at some young rabbits in a pet store. Poor buns are in aquariums with open tops so anyone can pet them. I took one lop out and sat with her on my lap. She was obviously scared, but seemed to get curious about my coat after a while of not touching her. I would really like to bring her home but I need to get the entire setup in my room ready.
>>2035928
I really hope that I find a bun with this personality. I can stroke a rabbit for hours and hours. But just having a curious little ball of fluff throwing tips around and hopping around to watch would be fun too.

>only lets me pet her, any other person she just runs, and if that person is a woman she actually attacks.

Huh.

When we were looking at fostering Harvey (>>2040487), we heard similar things from his owner. She turned out to be terribly allergic to rabbits. She also said he tried to bite her every chance he got and even swiped at her with his front paws!

So, since we had a farm-scale rabbit hutch with an empty berth, we figured we'd just board Harv for a while until we could find him a tolerant family or some rescue organization that would take him. The alternative would've been letting his owner set him free, which is an automatic death sentence for a domestic rabbit.

We've now had Harvey for almost eight years, and he's only bitten me twice - completely by accident during feeding time. He is *always* friendly to humans and loves being petted, reserving those "ferocious" paw-swipes for cats and dogs that wander too close; he is *more* than happy to eat craisins from your hands - they're his favourite treat.

It's been my experience that big rabbits like Flemish Giants raised from babies act the most like dogs, if that's what you were expecting from your pet rabbit.

Little rabbits sure are cute, but mine took a lot of conditioning to get over the "I'm somebody's next meal!" instinct. It was three years before Peekaboo (>>2040495) felt safe enough to dine in the presence of a person.

Mine's an angora. This is pre-haircut when I first rescued her. Her hobbies include getting her ears gently pulled and scritched, sitting under a chair, and eating out the blue and green pellets from her bunny mix. Her favorite food is dandelions. Least favorite is spinach.
>>
>>2040723
it's alright, wish the leash was a bit longer though. it looks kinda tight on her, but it's just because of her fur plus i wanted to get it secure without choking her. if you don't strap the part under the neck tight enough, their front paws can slip out of that part and they can get out of it. but overall i like it for her, and she's used to it.

This is my bunny. I only have him because the previous owner was going to kill him if I didn't take him. He was supposed to be snake food.

Very friendly, loves people, good with children, gets on well with the cats. The older of the cats grooms him from time to time. He has no concept of personal space, though. If you lie down near him, he will step on your face. And he's about eight pounds.

You can confine most of the mess to the rabbit's living quarters, although you might find yourself cleaning up after it a lot.

We had Emily (>>2041307) in a 700 square foot apartment, but she was a baby back then. After that, she lived in a ~1900 square foot house.

>How much does a rabbit that large eat on a daily basis?

A full-grown Flemish Giant might eat as much as half a pound in pellets per day. You can get a 50lb bag of Purina Rabbit Chow for about $15.00US.

Also, they should be eating hay (which costs a lot more per pound unless you buy in bulk) to keep their digestive system "regular", and leafy green "vegetables" to supplement.

I use the term vegetables loosely. The green parts of the carrots that people throw away are what they *should* be eating rather than the orange parts - except as a treat. Plus, you can use weeds like dandelions which, depending on how well you maintain your lawn, might be freely available or even abundant.

>Can rabbits be trained not to shit everywhere?

To a limited degree, you can train them to use a litter box, but it's been my experience that it's never 100%.

For example, Harvey (>>2040487) always pees in his litterbox - it weighs a ton from the urine at the end of the week when I clean it - but he frequently poops outside the litter box. Moonshine (>>2040830) seems to be about as likely to use his litterbox as not, but he was raised differently by his previous family.

Which ones look fat to you?

Mine looks chubby, but I can feel his spine and ribs easily. Rabbits generally have very thick fur, and the way they sit makes them appear stocky.

Some also have a double-chin ("dewlap") going on, but that's normal, especially in females. It's not indicative of weight unless it feels fat.

Ha! Emily (>>2045103) did the same thing! I eventually had to buy a replacement remote and store them out of her reach.

She was clever, though.

We had a small box of yogurt drops in the middle of the dinner table that we used to treat her with. One time, when we weren't looking, she jumped into a chair, jumped from the chair to the table, grabbed the box of treats in her teeth, threw them off the table, and then hopped down to eat all the treats that had spilled out.

In this picture, when she was younger, she actually hopped straight up into the bathroom sink one morning. I wasn't quick enough with the camera, though, so she'd started to climb out by the time I snapped her photo.

Why is your rabbit featured on a meat site?
>>
>>2045820
I wish my pets could sit on the ceiling.
>>
>>2045981
>Why is your rabbit featured on a meat site?

Because I granted an open license on that photograph when I donated it to Wikipedia. It's in the public domain.

The breeder who sold us Emily did not pretend that plenty of his stock weren't destined for the dinner table.

Flemish Giants really eat too much and take up too much space for the amount of meat you get off their bones, though. Smaller rabbits would probably be more cost effective to raise for meat.

>>2046341
>I wish my pets could sit on the ceiling.

Check with >>2038660, anon. Apparently they have plenty of rabbits like this where he's from.
>>
>>2046363
You usually don't let them get too old. They do give quite a bit of meat, and usually at a fairly young age. It's really a matter of finding the best time to take them out. Most popular meat rabbits are medium size.

I didn't mean that. Just that most rabbits are medium size. Flemish Giants get to a decent enough size to take out for dinner in a short enough time. Around bigger than most medium sized rabbits when their time for the stew pot comes.

Grab their chest and keep their bottom supported and they won't injure themselves. Don't keep them high up for long, and don't drop them no matter what. Set them on the ground or as close as you can.

For walking around, hold them with their feet against your chest, or their back against your chest with hand on their ribs, and support their bottom. Or Hold them horizontally against your stomach with one arm across their side so that you can manipulate doors easily. Just do it with confidence and don't panic with them.

I have 8, and my oldest female is the one that likes to be petted the most, she will lay besides you and sleep in bed, they others will come when i sit in their area and will follow me around in my house, i love them so badly<3
i can lift them, but nobody else can and they like other people they just have to get to know them at first. they loves to be petted by me and others who can sit and wait for them to come and sometimes when i sit with them and pet one, the other 7 will come and push my hand to signal "me too" they are so sweet and sociable just don't lift them around and treat them like hamsters, they really prefer not to be lifted, they are kinda like cats, they have to come to you

another part of their area, they normally have a run through pipe, but the youngest peed in it because they weren't littler trained in the beginning so i removed it until they learn to use the potty
>>
>>2050759
first time about 6 months ago, my bf little brother let my male out with my female without me knowing, so she got two baby bunnies, Brownie and Snow, two females
Then now about three month ago, before Holger got a new cage, Mary broke into his cage and gave birth to 6 baby bunnies, two of them suffered from peanut/dobbelt dwarf syndrome and the one died 1 day old, the other survived for 12 days, the last four survived without any problem, me and my boyfriend then moved to a bigger apartment, and decided to keep the new babies as well.
Called a vet and got Holger fixed ASAP, got him a new cage as well, now we're just waiting for Junior and Teddy to get mature so they can have their balls cut. it is already paid and planned we're just waiting for the balls to drop, which can happen now or in a month or two, so they are kept from the females till this is done, have only been kept separated for a day or two now, because i didn't remove them before they didn't drank milk anymore

Yeah don't worry, I was making a new closure for them, it wasn't 100% done when this picture was taken but it's covered in dirt now, well ice now actually as it's winter time. You can see here >>2055989 . They're also in an empty stable when it gets too cold, but they prefer being outside in the hutch as it a lot lighter and they can see more stuff. During summer I can take off 3 of the 4 walls on the bottom and I attach a bigger enclosure, but it doesn't work so well with snow. So they spend some time in the hutch now and some time in the stables. They also have heating lamps.

what do you expect when something like a rabbit is held in a human space under human circumstances where it can't do what rabbits do?
it is their nature to getaway, dig their dens and run fast. it's not a miraclolous shittyness what causes them to get easily fucked up if the environment doesn't fit their needs.

can't show it to you anymore since it's been long ago, but back when I housed 2 bunnys (sisters)
I've had a bunk bed, and enclosed the posts of the bed with chicken wire.
there was a layer of plastic sheets and margins so that possible fluids don't touch the wooden floor and it can still be cleaned easily.
(they used to piss in their 'toilet' mostly anyway)
it worked and was bigger than the average cage, so they could run around whenever they wanted which is important for buns mental and physical health but still
it was a poor excuse of a bunny home compared to what they live like in nature, but definately not the poorest excuse.
back in the day I didn't think about the uncomforting fact I only housed wild little animals under unfitting circumstances to have a cute fluffy captive buddy.
(I was like 10 back then)
would never get buns again if I can't give them enough free space for running and digging tho

i own 8 of them, and they have a whole basement to roam freely in and the oldest can jump stairs and the youngest are starting to learn they have free acces to the upper floor too (not that they uses it that much anyway)
i don't have closed cages, except from my youngest males, but that is because they haven't reach maturity jet, so i can't get them fixed. kinda just waiting for the balls to drop so i can get them cut, should happen within two weeks - a month, then they'll be free roamers again as the others
but i just feel like i don't have enough fun stuff for them to play with
they have a food ball they can toss around with, and a three way tunnel they run through, then i create other tossing toy out of fx. toilet paper rolls with food and hay in, then they have boxes with hay to chill in and make caves and then i make like fake roots they can go around and pull like if they were underground in the nature, and they don't seem unhappy it's just i feel like i could do more i just don't know what it should be.
the white cage under the stairs contains a guinea pig, that only comes out of the cage under supervision because i don't want the bunnies to harm him, in case they got annoyed with him or something.
he is though in love with my oldest female and will often sit out near her litterbox, where she often sits and chill besides him, then then like stick their noses together and when the cage is opened she will jump in and lick him and take care of him, and he will enjoy her company

Cat-mode bun reporting. Caught him in a rainstorm one day when he was a baby. Didn't find the owners. Bought a big cage for him, but he would rattle the shit out of it all night like a prisoner, so we just started letting him out more and more until the cage was left open all the time.

Now his cage is used by rats and he just has a bun station below the cat tree and in a utility closet.

Benefit of free-roaming buns is that you get amazingly good at cable management. I've also gained experience in vacuum repair, splicing cables back together, fixing carpets and wall repair. Thanks, bun.

Whenever there's any activity happening on the floor, he's always around inspecting shit. Usually licks you.

I've never seen mine eat food while in loaf mode.

Are lop-ears more relaxed than regular rabbits? It seems like most of the buns I see being held by people are lops.
>>

>buy litterbox
>fill with rabbit safe litter
>every time rabbit poops, pick up poop pellets and put in litterbox
>every time rabbit pees dab carpet with paper towels, put paper towels in litterbox
>always clean floor/carpet with cleaner products designed to remove pets stains, otherwise odors unnoticeable to humans will remain behind to tell animals where to shit and piss
>eventually only place with odor telling rabbit where to shit and piss is litterbox
>>
>>2068115

Blah, my rabbit only pisses in the litter box, but poops all over.... :(

>>2068082
Huh, she only eats in loaf mode. not sure about the behavior, this is the first rabbit I've owned.
>>
>>2064134
I'm surprised he came back. And you're irresponsible for not neutering him.
>>
>>2067094
Are you dr doolittle or something?

Also, your cats don't go after the rats and buns? I wouldn't think prey animals and hunters would mix.
>>
>>2068271
I'd only let the hamster out with heavy supervision. Same with the rats I currently have. But the cats don't really pay attention to the bun. They'll half assedly swat at him if he's in the way. One will sometimes lick him.

I think my bunny is dying, /an/.

She's suffering with EC and has a bad head tilt.
That's not the hard part, the hard part is her rolling. She can't find her footing to stop herself anymore. I have to help her up and keep her still before she's okay to stand and move on her own again.

She's still eating and drinking, which the vet said was a good sign and let me keep her at home.
But my vet, which is supposed to be a good vet for rabbits, only gave me 9 days of panacur. Now, I know that a lot people recommend 28 days, and this was a red flag for me. I feel like the vet was trying to let me down gently.

I'm going to keep fighting with her and supporting her as long as is fair and she has the spirit, but I'm not optimistic.

Sorry for the blog post bros, I'm just really sad.

Call your vet and ask why only 9 days. Ask for an honest answer(which you should have gotten in the first place)
And the most important thing to ask is what is best for your rabbit. Even if that means something you don't want to hear.

Sorry to hear that anon :(

Story of my sister's bunny:

>has an infection of bladder or something in that system
>gets x ray on that area
>fast forward
>we think he dribbles pee a lot because he's old
>go to clean him one day, everything is a mess
>take to vet again to have him cleaned and checked out
>get emergency call
>giant blockage in urethra which is why urine just kept leaking out
>surgery would probably make him suffer in pain and he would require a ton of care for recovery that isn't certain. (I guess it was trying to repair a rekt urethra)
>goodnightsweetprince.exe
>come to find out the blockage was visible but small in that first x ray months before

mfw they could have saved him, he should have lived

It really hurt me and he wasn't even my pet.
Then I lost my dad.
Hold me bros.

Thank god that didn't end up bad. I'm actually surprised it's ok from the bite (I know it wasn't a hard bite) because it's got to be way more power than what a rabbit can do when picking up another rabbit by the nape.
Anyone know why the horse did that in the first place?

>>2070772
Impressive. That's either a really brave bunny or a really stupid one. Or you're a bunny whisperer.

So guys i have a health/ teeth question

My bunny is now around 10 yo. i know thats quite a lot but he just recently got problems with his teeth. he is constantly grinding them and as of yesterday refused to eat anything solid and started drooling really hard.

i allready went to the vet but he told me that his teeth look normal and he is to old for any genetic anomality to suddenly show.

anybody have an idea whats happening here?

I'm more confused about why the rabbit is just chilling there. Horses tend to explore things with their mouths, so it must have thought the rabbit was some weird object and decided to check it out. Which is odd because that could suggest the horse and rabbit aren't "friends". If that's the case, I don't know why the rabbit wouldn't run away before something like that could happen.

The other possibility is the animals know each other (as that rabbit looks domestic), and the horse was just playing around. I mean the rabbit clearly gave two fucks about a horse being around it, and when it fell to the ground, it didn't immediately bolt off.
