Animals you'd love to keep as a pet but are impractical/impossible for whatever reason?
I love Armadillos and similar little armored mammals but I'm pretty sure it would be impossible for me to get one outside of the Americas. I'm planning on looking into a couple of Hedgehogs at some point instead since they are relevent to my interests and way easier to get/keep.
What animal would you like to have around if getting, keeping or domesticating wasn't an issue?

The only animal I'd ever keep as a pet is the dog, mainly because they have been domesticated for tens of thousands of years for that very purpuse, and will live a very fulfilling life, even in captivity.
I've never understood the whole "this animal is so awesome, I must own it" mindset that infest our culture. It's probably yet another way for the post-modern human to affirm their "unique" identity(some do it by appropriating "exotic" cultures, some by getting "exotic" pets).
Animals aren't collectors' items, but individuals with their own life goals(albeit usually not very complex ones).

It's hardly a modern thing. 99% of people who keep any animal aren't doing it for any practical reason. Even dogs are fetishized by people. See any "desireable" vanity breed that otherwise may suffer physical issues.
People have been keeping lots of animals just for the sake of ornamentation or companionship for a long time.

I don't know about low density suburbs, but I live in a high rise suburb, and up until a few years ago there was some organisation keeping bees just about a hundred meters from my block. A low density suburb should probably be(e) fine.

my plants killed most cats in my neighbourhood before I removed my hedges, they were sometimes able to get through those.
they can't get over my fences with barbed wire though, so that problem is mostly solved.
I have a border in my garden that I don't use yet, how wide would a cage for them to sleep in need to be, the border is about 1 by 3 metres.

I just want a fucking horse, one dude in particular.
He's a 2-year-old thoroughbred colt, just starting his racing career at the barns where I work. He's incredibly chilled and quiet for a colt on racing feed. He's extremely easy to handle and is one of the only horses I actually trust to never kick or bite me.
He always pokes his head out of his stall to say hello and loves being scratched and cuddled.
If I won the lottery I would buy him instantly and he could live on a farm with me and some other horsebros.

What do you feed yours? My MIL has some chickens and nothing grows in their pin. We moved the pin a couple years ago and still nothing will grow where it used to be. Then again, she feeds them her food scraps for whatever reason

Octodons (not exactly rats)
Korean Squirrel
Gerbils (althrough not thoses, smaller ones)
Bunnies/rabbits (hey hare even, or tamed "Garenne" type don't remember )
and the gerbils were with squirrels the most inadapted species for small enclosures.
I mean each gerbil required at least 0,8cubic meter of space per animal otherwise it would be the shitty battlefied of an overcrowded cage.
Squirrels were like in the 1 to 1.1cubic m range and staff would overcrowd the fuck out of any cage for "sotcking pet stores" leading in dead baby squirrels...
a lab rat needed .3 cubic meter of space to be breed.
Man I hated that job, the research Institute I worked with treated lab rats mices and bunnies way better.

I sometimes wish I had a bird again. When I was around 7 I had a pair of budgies. I almost tamed one of them. The other one was just too feisty. We had to get rid of them to move in with my Grandma who had a ton of cats.
I wouldn't be able to keep up with the cleaning and the attention. My cat wouldn't be a problem because he's very easily trained. I also work from home on the phone, so loud noises would be a problem too. Oh and I move around a lot so it may upset the bird moving to a new place all the time.
I also think having a cutesy rodent like a squirrel, racoon, or skunk would be really interesting. But, I know I can't give them the proper attention and keep up with the hygiene.
I also want a dog to wrestle with and have fun with. But, yet another thing that I probably shouldn't try to tackle until I own a house.
Gonna just keep being happy with my cat and keep hugging him while I work. He'll benefit with the shower of toys, furniture, and attention.

That doesn't really matter in todays world. Armadillos don't usually carry it, and worst case scenario it's easily treatable long before it gets bad.
Leprosy only used to be such an awful thing because there wasn't a known way to treat it.
