Assuming you don't have the yard expansion yet? Buy the following:
>Beach umbrella
>Orange cube
>Baseball
>Yarn ball
>Green cushion
These will give you higher numbers of silver fish, baseball with also attract Joe DiMeowggio, who will leave you 20+.
As soon as you start bringing in silver fish, swap your food to Frisky Bits (30 for 3 bowls). Better quality food brings you more fish, you'll easily earn it back. Do the daily password and use the fish exchange until you have 180 gold fish, then buy the yard expansion. More item slots = more cats = more fish.
Frisky Bits will also attract Tubbs, the fat fuck who will eat all your food. If he's sitting at the bow, DON'T DISTURB HIM. If you refill the food/change the yard he'll disappear and leave you fuck-all fish. If you leave him alone until he wanders off he'll leave you 50+.

You gotta remodel. Go to the "Other" option under menu. "Remodel" should be there. You want the "Zen" one, I think.
It'll either cost 140 or 280 gold fish, though.
Once you buy the remodel option, you can switch back and forward to the old yard again without having to rebuy it.

Green Cushion is a must; Fred (one of the most based cats in the game) favors that and delivers around 10 silver fish each time he visits. Lexy also delivers plenty of fish when visiting for that same toy.
Also it's vital once you've generated 30+ silver fish to invest in Frisky Bits. More cats show up and you have a chance to see Tubbs, the fat shit who eats all the food. The cat usually eats it all but you need to leave him and the yard completely alone until he leaves otherwise you won't get any fish from the visit.
Baseball is another good cheap investment for the chance of Joe Dimeowgio who gives you around 30 silver fish a visit.
