Have you guys had any problems with tank backgrounds confusing your reptiles?

I recently upgraded my leopard gecko's cage with a new hide and a background, and at first he was just more active because he was freaked out about his new environment. Now, he's used to his new hide, but he's constantly pawing at the back of his tank where the background is and peering up at it.

Is he just a weirdo or do reptiles generally have problems with backgrounds?

My gecko is pretty old and struggles when I change something in his new cage even a little bit.

To the point he can't get into one of his hides because the door is a couple millimetres from where he expects it.
