By far my favourite insects (and favourite animal overall). They're like elegant alien warriors. I can only find green and brown kinds where I live but there are so many incredible varieties. Post pics if you have them.
This thread is neat!
gonna dump a few pics of mantids I used to keep
>>2019160
This is stumpy. It lives on my porch. Its leg was bite off by a large dragonfly but he won.
>>2019181
What a fucking badass. That's some anime shit right there. Can it still move okay? I'm not sure how much they use their front legs for mobility but I bet it would be feeling pretty off-balance.
>>2019184
It still got around fine but it did make it harder for it to catch food so I did a lot of hand feeding.
>>2019186
Never seen them breeding before. Is it true that the female rips the head off the male after ?
>>2019200
You gotta fuck up for that to happen. Just feed the female well and give it something right before you let the male jump on and it's safe.
I'm done now.
This is Beatrix. I've had her for three months now. She's a ghost mantis.
>>2019219
That is awesome
>>2019272
She's beautiful, ghost mantises are stunning.
I hate living in a place that's too cold for these guys to exist in... But at the same time hate living in hot weather as well. wat do. ;_;

Technically not a Mantis.
>>2019519
what
>>2019555
In folkspeak anything belonging to mantodea is refered to as a (praying) mantis anyway. otherwise shit just gets confusing
Which mantis species would I be able to keep in a dorm? I have experience with invertebrates and would like something interesting but also pretty small.
>>2019632
Ghosts are super easy, frequently bred and can be kept in groups.
Other good choices are some Sphodromantis, Hierodula, Tenodera or Miomantis species.
Guess who didn't want to go back to their enclosure.

Much like the xenomorph: Beautiful, but nonetheless a horrifying, monstrous murder machine.
I tried to keep a wild one earlier this year, but it had a bad molt and died. What can cause this?
>>2021663
Wrong humidity, stress during molt, not enough space below the mantis, not fed enough, losing grip and falling down, taking too long. There can be many reasons.
These guys are everywhere at the nursery I worked at
>>2019555
Mantisflies. Members of the lacewing family.

>Dave, stop.
>Stop, will you?
>Stop Dave.
>Will you stop Dave?
>Stop Dave.
>I’m afraid.
>I’m afraid Dave.
>Dave, my mind is going.
>I can feel it.

Those aren't mantisflies.
>>2021924
lacewing order (Neuroptera) not family. And those aren't that.
Pic related is.
