Anybody on here make /an/-related OC? I do field recordings and there's been some interest so I decided to make a thread. Post your OC here!

Here's a nice easy one of a spring evening. Birds, frogs, crickets, breeze.

The Spring Peepers were intense this year (as always). My recording rig is really expensive but made up of many components, so I spent a little money at a time to build it up. This recording was done when I didn't have my amazing preamps yet and I hadn't built the Jecklin disk either - SO the quality isn't as beautiful as the first post. Shame too, because the peepers are a pretty impressive wall of noise. Next spring I'll get'm properly.

It's the new Tamron one. Not too crazy expensive relative to the other options that can manage that focal length. I am very pleased with its image stabilization. Image quality is pretty good too. But, because of the small aperture it's a daylight only kinda lens. I usually have it set to f8 to keep the image reasonably sharp.

Here's another one, I stuck contact mics on a tree that was creaking in the wind. None of this sound was audible at the time, it's all just running through the tree fibers as it stretched and twisted in the wind. Was lovely!

One of the most surprising nature recordings I've ever gotten. The bigass blizzard we got last january. No fancy/expensive mics for this one, just brough my handheld recorder out with the wind muff on and to my delight it really captured the sound of the blizzard out there beautifully. The little retard stray that we feed and keep warm was meowing though.

Amateur wildlife photographer here.

Canon Rebel SL 1, which is a decent beginning body but I'm looking to upgrade when I can afford it. The lens I use 99% of the time is the Canon EF 100mm-400mm I, which is my favorite piece of gear I own.

This is my favorite picture compositionally, but I wish I had understood my gear better at the time. I don't think I took this with the 100-400mm lens.

Several walking ticks on the outside of my pants. But even after I got home and was uploading the audio to my 'puter i found ticks climbing around on my desk and chair (little nignogs were crawling out of my clothes and hair and god knows where). i also had 3 ticks in me that i had to remove, but i found them all right away when i got home and did my tickcheck. that was back in june, and one of the tick bites still bothers me enough that i scratch it till the spot bleeds every few weeks. shitlords are vicious.

I have a hard time calling it artistic, as it is done on the fly with a 6 year old camera. A lot of it is so I don't forget about the animal and it's story. And I don't really share it much out of paranoia.

A lot of the images I have range between cute and funny to very graphic. Pic related is on the much more tame side of graphic. I'm worried I'll be banned if I post an animal with blood on it in fear of it being considered abuse.

I don't like to forget the animals. I remember that cat, I remember how affectionate he was, I remember his name, I remember why he was brought in. I had a feeling he wasn't going to do well, so I took a picture of him while I still could.

I also take pictures of things that piss me off, I realize... I suppose my idea is that if I hear anyone say they don't think anything bad will happen, I can show them what happens. But like I said, I'm too paranoid.

Really liking this stuff OP. It's pretty relaxing, like going on a camping trip or something.

This is borderline asmr (and I hate using that term...)

Anyways, and interesting idea I had (that I don't have the time or money to accomplish) that you might be into, is to set up a videocamera and your recorder and just film a certain area and capture the sounds.

I had thought mostly about cityscapes, but nature could work too, especially during weather events like snowfall or on a windy night.
>>
>>2006995

Well, I think you should post them all online or something( anonymously) after you're not affiliated with said shelter anymore, with your stories/what you remember about them. That way they'll be out there, on the internet so others can experience it as well.

I think it'd be a fitting tribute.

Thanks mang! I actually have an action cam I use for many of my /out/ activities, and I've used it for recordings as well. I just clamp it to the stand or tripod.

Unfortunately, it's useless for most of my recordings, because there's nothing to see really - either because it's at night (which are like 75% of my recordings) or it's just a stagnant landscape with nothing moving. I always bring my DSLR to take snapshots of the spot, but fussing with the video camera has proven to be a waste of time.

I currently live in a rural area, but back when I was innacity I would go out recording near the trains or traffic or in parks (usually a surround rig btw!) and for a lot of those I'd bring the camera. It was fun to sync-up the fisheye video with traffic whizzing all around in surround. Sadly, for ambient nature recordings there's usually nothing to see. If I ever setup in a flock of geese or the like I'd def bring the camera though! Course the geese would chew apart my wind muffs and shit all over my gear....
>>
>>2008391
Fuck geese.
>implying I don't feed and try to pet them at the river.

Yeah, daytime nature would be nice to look at, not so much to hear. ( maybe the Amazon...) and night is likewise good to hear but not see.

I was mostly thinking about how it would have been nice to see the blizzard you recorded up there. Maybe a nice rainstorm, or moving bodies of water. Super windy fall days might be nice with the leaves and all.

I just bought the album Ruins by grouper, she's got a lot of frog croaking/chirping in the background of her songs. Lighthouse in particular.
>>
>>2008687

Some daytime sounds are nice, but really dusk/night/dawn is where the magic happens. sometimes just a sunny day in the forest can be really soothing, if not not especially interesting or captivating. the blizzard recording was actually at night, but that was just purely incidental. i would love to have been able to get video of that... it looked like trees as far as you could see growing out of this moonscape, with wind blowing dunes of snow and ice around. it's all pretty magical, but as nice as it was to see, the sound is even richer.

one of my favorite things about recording is hearing how different it sounds from what you thought when you were there. every detail presents itself with a whole complex flavor. audio recordings can be as good or even better than "being there" a lot of the time. you really never what what you've captured until you leave and hear it back out of context.

>Ruins by grouper

Consider spending just a little bit more and getting the 90mm f/2.8 1:1 macro. Those macro zooms are not great and cannot do 1:1 magnification, which is the whole point of having a macro lens to begin with. Alternately, you could get a 50mm f1.8 regular lens and use macro tubes to get the magnification you want.

I'm not really getting it because it is a macro, more because of the focal range. Is there any other lenses you would suggest instead with a similar focal range? And my max price is right at $200 so that's another factor.

Well, I use a Tascam recorder and I love it. If you want to keep it simple get yourself a Tascam DR-05. The onboard mics are quite good and sensitive. It will allow you to plug an external mic in (if you get a battery-powered shotgun mic for focused recordings for example - good for bird calls and specific "up close" sounds). The onboard mics alone record a nice ambient stereo field.

With just the DR-05 and a small tripod you're good to go! If you expect to get serious get a DR-40 or similar because that allows you to plug two mics in via XLR cables (which is more professional gear), But the price increase to start all that is a lot. I use a DR-40 but use external mics with external preamps, phantom power, etc.

Think ahead and be smart about it so you don't waste money. With all the bits and pieces I've collected for my rig the total cost is about $1000 (or less) but the recoding quality I can get from it all is about the same as a $4k rig! I just have more components and gear to connect... still all fits on the tripod though!
>>
What would be the minimum gear for some decent wild bird photography?
Ideally something that could be upgraded if I enjoy it enough to invest some serious money.
>>
>>2011637
you'll need a DSRL and a zoom lens (at least 200mm but 300mm would be better). since you buy the camera body separate from the lenses find yourself a nice entry-level ($300) DSLR and then get a kit zoom lens... best value for monies would be a Sigma or Tamron, but there are others. It'll probably be something like 50mm-200mm or 80mm-300mm etc. You need dat zoom for birds, but also know that the zoom lens will make it harder for you to take regular photos. For that you want something like an 18mm-50mm lens. I bought a Pentax K-50 bundled with two lenses, 18-55mm and 50-200mm, all-up it was like $500 but now I don't need anything else.

These kinds of hobbies can be expensive, but this is the best time of year to buy on account of all the quidmas sales

>>
>>2011637
You can get something like the Nikon d3300 with the 55-300 kit lens instead of the default 18-55 for not too much money (relatively speaking, in photography terms). Previous poster's suggestion of Pentax k50 is also good.

The sensors on both of those cameras are quite good so upgrading to a nicer quality lens in future will result in significant bump to your image quality. Ultimately high quality lenses are where you want to break the bank, camera body isn't as important.
>>
>>2011637
I would do something like a Nikon d3200 or 3300 body and a tamron 18-200mm lens. Then if you really want a longer range you could bump up to like a 70-300mm zoom.
>>
>>2006646
is this a setup for binaural recording?
>>
>>2013224
semi-binaural yeah. with a Jecklin disk you get some of the head-related cues of a true binaural recording, but it also leaves a few out. The arrival time delay between channels is pretty much spot-on, but the transfer function (frequency response) isn't quite as drastic and also the level difference isn't as drastic. Binaural recordings are great with headphones but rather poor through speakers, baffled omni techniques (like the Jecklin disk) aren't as vivid in headphones but the compromise is it sounds good through speakers without weird crosstalk and phase issues.

Finally, without ears or shoulders you get no sense of elevation that you get with true binaural. Which is also fine with me because that not only needs to be heard with headphones, but it's also different for every person so it doesn't work great for a general listening audience.

tl;dr: yup, pretty much
