Anon in previous thread asked about how to decrease humidity in leo tank. There's a few things:

Use tile for substrate as it does not hold any moisture (unlike paper towel)

Increase airflow in the room with a fan

Smaller water dish

Have an incandescent light on the screen top during the day 12 hours on, then off at night.

If that still doesn't do it, dehumidifier.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but a year ago when I got my anole I tried feeding him mealworms. He nearly starved to death instead of eating them and I was pissed as hell when I had to switch to crickets, which easily escaped the Exo Terra tank and died all over my apartment.

Well, today the motherfucker just took one from my fingers without a second thought. Fuck this lizard. Piece of shit.

Buttersworm.jpg

I ran out of phoenix worms recently and it looks like for some reason the local pet stores are having difficulty resupplying them this month. Went on a search for alternative that is also commonly sold here in Canada. To my insectivore geckos I feed mealworms and usually phoenix worms/hatched soldier flies, plus any house flies I manage to catch in the apartment. I don't like having them on mealworm only diet so searching.

I was under the mistaken impression that butterworms were high in fat. This, it turns out is not the case. I don't know how this myth started but it remains prevalent. Lots and lots of people on herp message boards think they're high in fat. I guess because they have a fatty sounding name and look kinda similar to waxworms (which are very high fat).

Nutritional analysis of butterworms is approximately:
>58% moisture
>16% protein
>42mg/100g calcium
>5% fat
>1% ash

That 5% fat content is on par or slightly better than crickets and dubia roaches. Mealworms come in at about 13%.

So I gave them a shot and all the geckos love them, picky eaters included. Will continue to incorporate these in to their diet. I thought these were nutritionally poor for years. Should have looked it up sooner.

here's an article on them by Frank Indiglio

posted in the other thread about getting my first leo, went out today and got this viv/heatmat. Do you guys think this looks okay?

Also would tiles definitely be the best substrate? the guy in the store was adamant that sand would be okay but I thought different.

>>
>>1999424
Looks good. For fire safety you need to arrange that heat mat so it has airflow from the bottom. This can be achieved by drilling some holes through the bottom of your viv where the heatmat will go. Alternately you can make some kind of short stand for it to rest on; like a few bits of ceramic tile pieces, one on each corner and one below the middle. Then place a second tile on the top of the heatmat. Leo should be able to directly touch the mat itself.

Sand is the worst leo substrate. You can safely use tile, reptile carpet, paper towel. Tile is the best because it is easy to clean, does not shed particulate, and holds heat.
>>

or basically a dedicated room in your house

>>2000234

>>
>>2000213
Keeping them solely on mrp will not harm them but it has been shown to slow their growth rate. However, there are new developments with this. Both Repashy and Pangea mrp brands now offer mixtures that include powdered insects in the ingredients. These are Repashy Grubs n' Fruit, and Pangea Fruit Mix with Insects. Offering one of these for one feeding a week will round out your gecko's diet to include the additional protein and fat content provided by live insects.

You can also give them easy to manage live insects a couple times a month, such as dubia roaches, butterworms, phoenix worms, waxworms. All of which are significantly less hassle than fucking crickets.

I just replaced the water in my turtle's aquarium a couple days ago, and now I notice that a gross, translucent film has developed over the surface of the water and it's absolutely setting me off.

Anybody know how I can get rid of this or will it eventually go away on its own?
>>
>>2000497
If your worried about your bearded dragon being too skinny, you may want to take it to a vet to make sure it isn't sick or doesn't have any internal parasites.

Also, how can you own a beardie for a year and just now be asking how to take care of crickets?

But to answer your question, the best thing you can feed them is dark greens, carrots, grains, and occasionally a very small amount of fish flakes if you want extra protein.

Pet stores also have cricket food available for sale.

Fungus gnat infestation!

Had this happen same time last year too. I mixed mosquito bits in the substrate and let the top layer completely dry. That did the trick pretty well. Also sticky traps for the adult escapees.

Anyone used beneficial nematodes in a gecko tank before? Im not clear on whether they would also kill my springtails in addition to the gnat larvae.

Does this look like shell rot? It's a baby turtle still, the only two other things I'd think it could be would be mineral buildup (well water out here) or maybe they look like that because she's getting ready to shed the scutes off.

Any ideas?

Can confirm. I think part of it is that, unlike crested geckos, adult gargoyle gecko first stress response is go hold still and hope camoflage does the job of tricking predators. Cresties are more likely to skedaddle right away which makes them a little more challenging to hold. When I pick up my garg she just flattens herself against my hand for a minute then perks up to look around when she realises I'm not trying to eat her. When relaxed they stalk around chameleon slow, it's pretty funny to watch.

Yeah pacman or pyxie frog are the go-to species for that. Pyxies also have a dwarf version if you like them but aren't sure about an eight inch blob with legs that eats you out of house and home.
>>
>>2002545
I'd probably quarantine it for like a week and see if the spot gets bigger or vanishes. There's a chance that it could be a fungal infection or something.
>>
Okay so I have a question about those little white frogs that are always at every pet store ever. Are those African clawed frogs or are they some sort of dwarf variety, or just juveniles?

I've been doing some research on them because they seem interesting and very low-maintenance, but I don't know if I'm even researching the right thing. I saw pictures of them and they seem pretty big compared to those tiny lil ones at the pet store
>>
>>2003461
If white, that indicates it's an albino african clawed. The species they commonly get confused with if the African dwarf frog. Here's a page that explains the difference.

DIY terrarium extension project! My male crested gecko, two years old, appears to have outgrown his 18x18x18 tank. He's very active for a crestie and i think he would benefit from some extra space for his aerial frog antics. I have a spare 12x12x18 clear acrylic tank and plan to use the walls of it to make a 12" height extension on the top of his existing exo terra. Basically securing the acrylic pieces to the screen top and attaching it to the top of the exo where the screen currently fits in.

Will post pics when finished. Should be pretty simple job.

Oh, no trouble with mealworms. I just prefer to have at least two types of feeders available to my strict insectivores. I would use roaches but they are illegal in my province of Canada unless you have a study permit to keep them.

Mealworms + crickets + fresh veg is a fine diet for a beardie.

Got Dirty Randy a few weeks ago. It has all but stopped eating vegies/fruits. It wont touch squash, green beans, greens, cactus, grapes, or bell peppers. It seems to only want to eat roaches, crickets, and worms. Is this normal? Should I stop offering it food to get it hungry and get it to eat plant matter?
>>
>>2005704
he's just a baby, his diet should be like 90% insects right now anyway
continue to offer veggies, but its not a big deal

Ah. I see. He'd eat cactus and squash when I got him then suddenly stopped. Guess I'll just focus on the insects for a while then.

Easy. Their care is basically the same as the other rhacodactylus geckos. Just more space, more food, more cleaning.

They're very expensive though. $350 at reptile expo is about the cheapest they get.

They do learn to come when they're called, so try making a vocalization whenever you feed them. It's super cute watching them scurry up to you and using a sound seems to keep them from just associating you with food.

I know this is a slow board, but if somone would give me some advice before Christmas (Literally) it would be great.

I just got my bearded dragon but the cunt refuses to eat, I'm dropping the worms right in front of him but he's only eaten three worms, and some kale. Is this to be expected? Also, how much should I be handling him and taking him out of his tank? It seems like we should be building trust early on.

Thanks in advance!

if you just got it then that's normal since they need time to settle in and get comfortable
>>
>>2006133
If it's not eating don't handle it.
>>
>>2006157
Alright, he's already comfortable with handling since he just went to sleep on me, I'll work on feeding tomorrow.
>>
>>2006163

Not how it works with reptiles.
If they are comfy with you, they will run around on you and near you, that 'sleeping' on you is a stress response.
>>
>>2006163
No more handling until beardie is eating regularly. One week minimum. I know with passive reptiles like beardies it seems okay to hold them right away because they don't put up a big fuss about it. It's best not to. Hands off for now please. This isn't just us being fussy about care issues, the waiting period for handling a new reptile is very important for your pet's health.
>>
>>2006133
After settling in period, keep handling to two or three times per week with a duration of no more than 15-30 minutes per handling session. 15 minutes max if your place is colder than 75 degrees.

I'm currently figuring out how to snek tonk
I have a 100x50x50cm aquarium with no lid (will diy)
but i cant figure out the lights and heating properly

My plan is currently put led lighting to the lid with 12/12h cycle(normal lights are option but require more work and money)
Heating would be taken care of with heat pad that covers 25% of the bottom

http://www.amazon.co.uk/STC-1000-All-Purpose-Temperature-Controller-Thermostat/dp/B00AB8WUP4/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1448722595&sr=1-1&keywords=STC-1000

That would take care of keeping the heat at proper levels
My only problem is that what wattage pad i would need? the room ambient temperature is about 23-25c and the there will be little ventilation due to dry air

Can i make a ballpython live happily with these?

Hey guys, eastern Canadian here.
I'm interested in importing a Tegu someday, but it's extremely cold in my house during the winter even after maximum heating.

My concern is that while the habitat itself should be suitable for living and is a decent temperature, the bottom of the enclosure would be cold and icy, and that if I were to let it roam around my house that it would become irritated, I am aware that they hibernate during the winter but it may still be too cold for the lizard.

What do you guys think, should I refrain from purchasing the Tegu? I've owned a couple lizards in the past, but never with an enclosure so large that it had to be placed on the ground.
>>
>>2006554
>the bottom of the enclosure would be cold and icy
what the fuck how cold is your house? Do you literally live in an igloo?
>>
>>2006555
The only place that I can fit an enclosure that is 8 feet by 4 feet, with a height of 3 to 4 feet in my house is on the floor, I honestly don't know why the floorboards of my house are so icy cold even with maximum heat being blasted, my theory is that the floorboards are thinner than most houses or that a pool of watery ice tends to form under it.
>>
>>2006559
Build a short stand, slide some radiant heat panels under there.
>>
>>2006489
The under tank heaters sold by pet suppliers are all the same. Just buy the appropriate size. 25% is a little small. Aim for 30-40% coverage.

Your setup will work just fine.
>>
>>2006593
Ok, thanks.
I have sneaky feeling im over thinking this heating thing
>>
I found my tinc on the floor about an hour ago. He would have been out for 3 hours maximum. Picked him up with gloves and put him under the water feature in the tank. He had a dust bunny on him but I managed to wash it off. Afterwards he sat behind a plant stepping very slowly for about 15 minutes but then he hopped over to his sleeping area, a hole in a piece of driftwood and is hiding there.

Will he survive?

Hey I'm thinking about getting a babu ball python in the semi near future and I wanted to know if you guys had any top tips for owning one? I'm getting a 20 gallon long tank from a friend who currently owns a 2 year old ball python with a heating pad included and I have a heat lamp at my house from a previous excursion with a leopard gecko which ended depressingly. Any sort of reccomendations or anything?
>>
>>2006599
Get your heating pad and let it run for a while
if you're still concerned about how much heat you have then get a ceramic heat emitter

>>2006601
if I knew what a "tinc" was maybe. It sounds like its either a frog or a toad

>>2006645
just read the care sheets, you should be fine
is the heat lamps a light? I'd ditch it for a ceramic heat emitter.
Also, since you're getting a baby you'll be fine for a couple years, so I'd recommend you start saving little bits of money so you can buy it a nicer, bigger tank later on.
>>
>>2006652
The heat lamp is indeed a light, what is a ceramic heat emitter?
>>
>>2006655
its exactly what it sounds like
its a ceramic coil that screws into your lamp's light socket and emits only heat, no light
>>
>>2006658
Oh okay, the lamp I have can take up to 75 watts, what wattage would be good for a 20 gallon tank? Also should I put the heat emitter on the same side as the heating pad? I've heard that tanks need a cool spot and a warm spot.

>>2006660
I'm not entirely sure what wattages it comes in, but it depends on how cold it gets in your room
I have one thats 150w and its much too much. I have it on a dimmer switch at like half power, So I'll probably get a smaller one and another thermostat really soon here so I don't have to babysit it all day

>>2006676
ooh sorry, I have no idea how well dart frogs deal with that kind of thing. I guess just make sure it has water and watch it real close
>>
>>2006687
Well I usually have my air conditioner on full blast but it is a sit in the room one and it's right up against my bed so it only gets me cold at night, the rest of my room is uncomfortabley warm by my standards. How should I test the temperature of my room?
>>
>>2006691
you'll want to get a thermometer and/or a temperature gun to measure the ambient air temp in the tank with everything set up.
Ideally you want the ambient temp to be around 80
>>
>>2006660
Keep in mind you can only use lamps with a ceramic base with CHEs. CHEs will destroy a regular metal lamp pretty quickly, they burn at over 300F and I've read mine over 400F before.

>>2006785

Is it possible for snake mites to infest feeder rats?
After I finished heating up the rat I wad going to feed to my snake I noticed it was covered in tiny reddish brown bugs
I put in a ziplock bag and back in the freezer to take back to the pet store tomorrow and warn them
>>
>>2007181
Snake mites might hitch a ride, but they generally do not infest mammals. That said...
>reddish brown
Those came from the rat itself, not a reptile. They aren't contagious to snakes, but yeah the store's rat colony is infested with mites. Little black or dark brown mites are the ones you need to watch out for.
>>
>>2007200
ok yeah, there more of them than just "hitching a ride"
Does that mean its ok to still feed to my snake?
I'm feeling pretty paranoid about it
>>
>>2007026
Weird but ok. Why desu exactly? Seems like a worse replacement to me.

>>2007364
If you kill them and freeze they should be fine, but I'm not sure if it's safe to feed the rats with live mites on them. I know fleas carry worms but idk if mites do, unless the rats have fleas. Those worms may or may not infest reptiles, but I wouldn't chance it as reptiles can get worms from live animals.
>>
>>2007181
Snake mites don't infest mammals under any circumstances. They don't even infest other reptiles.

One could have possibly been incidentally crawling on a rat I guess.
>>
>>2007619
I put them back in the freezer so I think they should be dead after 24+ hours

Not a major concern right now. This tank is enormous. The one at the store had a lot less stuff than just the side of mine I have furnished. It's like 50 gallons.
He has a few caves I made out of wooden hides, 2 pieces of driftwood, vines and a steppe

Stick more foliage to the walls. Since yours is young make sure to put a couple bottle caps of food in so he doesn't have any trouble finding food source when hungry.

Cheap way to add more climbing surface is to purchase bamboo stakes from garden center type store. It's like eight bucks for a whole bundle of them. Tie two or three together, wrap some fake plants around the whole business and presto.

Hey okay so basically I have some fish I need to get rid of. I have 3 cherry darts and 2 neon tetras. My little brother got them a while back but doesn't take care of them, and basically said that he doesn't want them any more, and I have different ideas for the tank, so short story shorter, they need to go.

My question is, as opposed to just crushing them or something, I was thinking I could put them to some use and feed them to my other pets. Would cherry darts and neon tetras be safe for a painted turtle or a pacman frog to eat? I just don't know if they have any secret toxicity or something.

Feeding Question

I have a ball python that is at least 22 months old
What size food should I be feeding him?

I asked this question leddit and they said weaned rats

He's currently 450 grams and around 4 foot which I feel is quite underweight for his age.

He's currently on medium mice once a week

I hope this thread isn't dead

weaned rats would fall on smaller end of the feeding spectrum there
I'd go for small rats

if you're going to switch to rats, I'd say start with whatever rats are closest to the mice you feed in size
also what helped me immensely is get you hands on a small plastic bag with used mouse bedding in it.
I have one with a hole poked in it, so when feeding time came around I'd squeeze it a few times to get that mousey smell flowing

No, it's the first one since he had a bit of trouble accepting rats, and it's the first time he has diarrhea too.
>>
>>2008955
Sounds like its the chicken then. It is typical for chicken to do that. I would try scenting the rats and converting her over.
a good method of scenting i use is to blend the animal that will be used for scenting (obviously already dead) and rolling the rat in the blended chicken or animal of choice. i use this method for my reptile eating snakes (using skinks) when they are born or hatched

Ok I've got a question for anyone out there who can answer it.
>I really wanted to get a pacman frog but had to find a way to keep a sustainable food resource.
>Parents are against crickets but i read that you can feed pacmans a mealworm.
>finally convince parents to let me start a colony of mealworms.
>Get frog
>Small little guy, about the size of a 12 year old's palm.
>Feed him 3-4 times a week
>Start just tossing mealworms into his tank and not making sure he gets them.
>He was in a 10 gallon with eco earth substrate, a large water dish, some fake plants, and 2 hides. There was a heat at under half of his tank.
>Begin to see he is getting skinnier.
>Start to handfeed him
>Notice these weird red dots on his leg, looked like holes in his skin.
>Also begin to see white dots on him.
>Move him to plastic shoebox quarantine tank.
>Had paper towel substrate, heat mat, water bowl, and a hide.
>He begins to look better but one day he is just upside down in tank.
>Flip him over and leave him.
>Next day come back, he's flipped over, but this time he's dead.
>I don't know what I did wrong.
I have since talkedto a breeder and he said pacmans will get impacted from an all mealworm diet but I don't really think that's the only thing. I read on some forum that someone's pacman with similar symptoms had chrytid. Any of you out there know anything that could have caused this?
Pic related, it's him like a month after I got him.
Oh and I had him for about a year before he passed.
>>

So I recently switched from a heatlamp to a UTH for my snek. Its been about a month or two and he's just recently started getting a little redness on his belly, but only on the lower half (closer to his tail) of his body. I suspect this is the start of shed belly, but is it possible its some kind of burn or something? The UTH obviously doesnt cover the whole tank, so he's got other places he could be if its hurting him.
>>
>>2009521
Okay well he was still a babby so he probably died from impaction. It's not usually recommended to feed juvenile pacman frogs in their tank unless you have a safe substrate for digestion or no substrate at all. My frog is about the same size and I put it in a big Tupperware bowl when I feed it, that way it won't swallow a lot of dirt when it eats. Juvenile frogs can't handle this very well, but to my knowledge, it's okay to feed adult pacmen in their enclosure because it's easier for debris to pass through their digestive tract

On another note, you may have starved the fucking thing to a degree. Pacman frogs are dumb and mealworms can dig, the frog may have either waited too long to attack or may not have even seen the prey, and the mealworms may have just dug into the substrate.

As for the white dots and red bumps, I can't say for sure, but judging from the rest of the information, you just straight up took pretty shitty care of the poor thing. If I had to take a wild guess, the red dots could have been from mites, and the white stuff could have been a fungal infection, but that's purely me guessing.

Do more research and put a better effort into caring for your pets
>>
>>2009521
>>2009646
Read your post again after posting my own, another issue was probably the heat mats. Frog skin is very delicate, and from what I've heard, heat mats can kill them if they get too close, because they'll pretty much just sit there and burn to death. If you do use a heat mat, it's better recommended to attach it to the side as opposed to on the bottom
>>
>>2009624

That may have been red-leg. It's caused by Aeromonas hydrophyla parasite.

Overall your description sounds like a combination of few different issues though.

Heating pads are better when used lightly for increasing ambient temperatures. It can be risky because the animal may overheat and die. Your best bet is to just get a heat lamp

Took a while to get a good photo, lil guy seemed really curious about the camera.

Got this veiled cham back in august as a gift, and had no previous experience with reptiles, so I was in a bit of a panic, trying to get the right stuff and reading things online. He's unfortunately been having to sit tight in this enclosure since, but I have a pretty big cage that I've been working on for a long time to try and make up for it. I feed him crickets and mealworms daily, sometimes with calcium powder, and he seems to be doing fine, no irregular behavior and shits appear to be normal.

So, /an/, how am I doing for a first time reptile caretaker, with having such a fragile reptile dropped into my possession suddenly? What am I doing wrong/can improve/other advice? Pics of that large in-progress cage coming in a bit.

>>2008767
Rats about 60-70 grams in weight is what he should be getting. Another 50 grams, and the 10-15% ratio isn't used anymore, and from 500 grams to about 1,500 grams your ball python should get one small rat. 1,500-2,000 grams get mediums, and above that they get larges (not that that kind of weight is common), but I'd still stick to mediums desu.

At 22 months old, should be eating every 2 weeks. Some people do weekly throughout life, but 2 weeks is honestly healthier and I see more keepers doing 2 weeks than 1 week.

>>2009624
Probably the heat pad is running too hot, if you don't have one already get a thermostat, and a temp gun to double-check surface temps so you can zero in your thermostat temp to where it needs to be. For example, to get my BCI's floor temp to 90F I have her thermostat set to 101F, the retic's is set to 95F to reach 90-91F, etc.

>>2009676
With a thermostat, the probe never goes in the enclosure. It goes in between the heat mat/heat tape and the bottom of the enclosure, and the heat mat/heat tape is attached to the surface the enclosure is on and the enclosure sits on top of it.
>>
>>2009866
Your ambient temp should be 75-80 with a hot spot of 90. If the ambient is not high enough from the under tank heater alone, you can use a low wattage ceramic emitter on the screen top to bump it up a bit. Both should be controlled by thermostat. Minimum, you want the under tank heater on a thermostat and your ceramic emitter on at least a rheostat to control its output.

>>2009905
All of this is false. If you use a heat lamp for leos you must also have a non-light emitting source of heat for night time. You cannot leave that light on 24/7.

Alright /rag/ tell me about Cresties. I've been doing my research for the last few days and I think I want one. If anyone's willing to help out, I'd like to ask a few questions

-So they DO NOT need UVB lighting ever?
-I've heard you can feed them baby food instead of gecko diet powder. Is this true?
-What are some cheaper alternatives for enclosure building? (tote instead of tank, suction cup soap dish instead of suction cup food holder, etc.)
-How fast do they grow?
-Are they generally sturdy animals?

If you have any other tips or shit that I missed then I'd appreciate to hear it!

They don't need UVB. You should dust their food with D3+Calcium once a week.

You can feed them baby food as a treat, but it doesn't have enough nutrients to feed it daily, you have to use the meal replacement powder. If feeding pangea, you don't need to dust their food.

You can buy accurite thermometer/hygrometers at walmart to monitor humidity and heat for like 7 bucks, much cheaper than the ones meant just for reptiles. You can buy plant thermostats to control heat to make sure whatever heat source you use doesn't get too hot. I bought a VIVOSUN Digital Seedling Heat Mat Thermostat Controller 68-108℉ for $16.95 just yesterday to control heat on my roach tub.

Don't know the other questions though, sorry.

Looking back on what I know now I realize the care wasn't the best. Honestly I did make sure he ate though so no starving. They weren't mote and I'm 100% sure he had died.

>lighting

UVB not necessary however they do benefit from a clear delineation between day and night. If your place gets lots of natural light through the windows, there's no need for any lighting on the tank. However, if your place it fairly dim, limited windows, northern exposure etc. I do recommend you run some low wattage lighting on a 12 hour day/night cycle. LED lighting is good for this as it has very little heat output.

On same subject, they are most comfy in the low to mid 70's. If your house averages in that range, no additional heating required. If your house goes above 80 in summer, air conditioner is a must. 80 is their max safe temperature.

>food
Don't. Please use commercial crested gecko diets like Repashy, Pangea, etc.

>housing
Yes, you can keep them in clear plastic totes. Look for ones that are at least 18" tall. Or, you could do a stacked DIY kinda thing with two totes stacked vertically and a large hole cut in the lid of the bottom one to make one tall interior space. Suction cup shower soap dishes work great as food ledges and climbing apparatus. Strap a paper towel roll to one and you've got an elevated hide. Bamboo stakes from garden center are a cheap way to add climbing surfaces. Here's a video on totes for cresties:

>growth rate
They reach full adult size between two and three years of age. The majority of that growth happens in the first year and a half. They sort of bulk up, weight and muscle-wise, from 1.5 years to 2-3 years of age.

>sturdy

Yes. They may drop their tails and those will not grow back if dropped, but health-wise they are quite resilient. You will not damage their skin by holding them (be careful though).

>tips

Don't buy from a chain pet store. Breeders are best. Yes, shipping them across country is safe, weather permitting.

How do you share house/flat share with other people, and still keep spooky pets?

My housemate is being a total bitch about my Beardie now that he's getting much bigger. I kind of don't want to lock him away in my room though.

Wat do?
>>
>>2010987
are you the kind of retard who runs around the whole house with "muh toy lizard"?

the beardie is supposed to stay inside the tank in your room

Poop again with no new meal.

Not as hard as it could be but much more better than diarrhea.

>first time was a pinkie when she was a baby
>had no problems going for it
>she's closing in on shedding but that hasn't stopped her in the past with live
>do the usual prep and thaw it out
>present it with the tongs
>nothing
>not even a poke out of her hide

Crap
On the other hand, catching her sleeping in the middle of winter might not be helping any.
That being said, how do you guys usually prep frozen/thawed to your snakes
>>

Quality consecutive digits.

I just thaw in warm water, pat dry with paper towel, offer to snake. If no takers, i leave mouse on a dish in the tank over night. Still no takers, try again in two weeks (for adult bp).

Apparently braining the mouse can help entice reluctant feeder. Never had to try that though.

used mouse bedding never fails to get my girl riled up
just before feeding I squeeze this pastic full of mouse bedding, so it fills her tank with mouse scent, she always immediately comes rocketing out of her hide box ready to eat the first thing that moves

This one in particular is 6 months old. I'm starting to think she just may not be hungry.

The week before thanksgiving, she was fed a hopper on that Friday, and with the shops closing down and me being out for the holiday, I went ahead and fed her a common that Wednesday.

So either she's still full, only likes live things, or somethings wrong

I've got a Bluetongue that seems to be developing signs of a respiratory infection. I'm going to take it to the local vet that specializes in reptiles ASAP but it's closed over the weekend. Is there anything I can do to about it in the meantime?
>>
>>2011267
Yeah give it a week and try again.

I've set up for a leopard gecko and decided to buy one from petsmart even though I'd prefer a breeder. They list their geckos as "fancy" and "normal" but I know they have no idea what morphs they really are. Is there a good online guide to what possible color or morph my juvenile will be? I'm a beginner with this kind of thing and I know they change greatly with age but I'd like to have a basic idea. Also will they be able to tell the gender at that age?
>>
>>2011382
Just Google leopard gecko morph guide. Petsmart's 'fancy' is likely to be any of the most common albino morphs (Mack snow, tremper albino etc), those are almost as common in pet trade as normals these days.

However! Check Google again to see if there are any upcoming reptile expos in your area. Those are a great opportunity to buy animals directly from breeders for minimal cost. This is a reptile that can live for 20+ years so it is worthwhile to wait a bit and make sure you get one that is genetically sound and healthy. Petcolandsmart is last resort.

Image might not be clear but the colour is a sort of dark yellow

and why is it you've decided to buy one from petsmart?
>>
>>2011382
Good news. I found a local breeder of a few different reptiles. They don't advertise a lot so that is why I missed them at first. I'm going to make the drive to go out and see what leopard geckos they have and if everything goes well bring one home tonight. I really can't justify buying from petsmart....
>>
>>2011582
Hey good to hear. Best of luck. Post pics of new critter when you get it.
>>
>>2011397
It's hard to say from these pictures. Need to see inside of mouth.
>>
>>2011600
I'm just going to get him to a vet just to be safe anyway.

Thanks for the reply anywho
>>
>>2011603
So, mouth rot is sort of a blanket term for inflammation of the mouth. It can be caused by a few different things. Infectious stomatitis being most common. Oral antibiotics are the treatment for that. It can cause osteomyelitis if left unchecked but is easily treated if caught early.

Good idea to have vet take a look.

I've never owned any reptile before, but I'm intrigued by the Argentine Tegu. They're so beautiful. If anyone here keeps a Tegu, what are the monthly expenses?
