My cockatiel flew into my ceiling really fast for some reason and ended up hurting herself a bit ;_;
It's not direct bleeding, but there's some blood on the ceiling, and there's like a reddish area over her eye/on her head
For the moment I've applied some cornstarch on her wound
What do I do?
Is it worth a vet visit?
Should the cornstarch be mixed with water too?
My mom keeps telling me to mix it whilst I think it should remain poweder

Got to see a peregrine eating a pigeon the other day. That was pretty neat, he let me get really close, since he was eating right next to the sidewalk.

This morning I got to watch a crow doing flybys on a hawk.

Pretty standard stuff but when you're in your state's biggest city you don't get to see large birds all the time. Happy to see anything that's not a house sparrow tbh.
>>
So my green cheek has a weird habit of occasionally running around with his beak plowing against the ground.

He only does this when hes playing on the beds andI assume/hope he just likes the feeling its makes for him but could anything be wrong?

he acts 100% normal, albeit goofy except for this

I was thinking about getting one, but are there any birds that, like, enjoy living with human? I saw some parrots on yt that were playing with cats, but I don't know what type it was. What birds are not afraid of human?

Another question, are there birds that would come back if they escaped by opened window?

[spoiler]Also can you domesticate a sparrow?[spoiler]

I realize this is a tough ask but can anyone identify this bird? I somehow shot it in midair with my manual focus lens. Found it hiking in New York State. It was darting from flower to flower although I wouldn't characterize is as hovering in any sense. It was a distinct flap. Tail feathers are distinctly black and yellow, white balance may be off because I shot it in the shade of the forest on a cloudy day, but seems to be a pale yellow-brown over the body. Thought it might be a sort of grosbeak but the beak seems narrower.

Thanks for any help.
>>
>>1986180
also I just did some more research and I am thinking this might be a yellow-bellied flycatcher (empidonax flaviventris). it would be searching for bugs not nectar. do you guys think I am correct?
>>
>>1986180

looks like a female american gold finch... i'm in the poconos and we have them here too

>>1986155

depends on the bird really whether or not they come back... i had 2 fully flighted budgies who got out of their cage in my garden, one never left and let me put her back in the cage... the other did and flew past our neighbors house, but i found him just behind the garden fence on his way back whistling back to me every time i whistled to him... i happened to get lucky though...

birds that are afraid of people tend to either not be used to them, or to have had bad experiences... my green cheek will chill with people she just met, sitting on their shoulders and preening them... she's also extremely attached to my s/o and i... but i got her handraised from a breeder and made a point to socialize her often to get her to this point + she's just generally friendly and outgoing anyway

>>1985214

they just kinda seem to do weird shit tbh... he's probably just playing

>>1983587

my green cheek is relatively quiet a lot of the time, but female budgies are even quieter... it's male budgies that tend to make a lot of noise

>>1983188

never had a cockatiel, but my green cheek is really affectionate, friendly, playful, easy to deal with etc

the only thing is if you don't have a lot of time for a pet don't get a green cheek, they need a lot of attention

I'm going to get a cockatiel soon and I found someone who is selling handfed/tamed ones for a good price.

The thing is that she says that it's around 6 weeks old and already weaned. When I was looking around on the internet, I read that most cockatiels aren't weaned until maybe 8 weeks old.

Does this mean that she's forcibly weaned it off too early? I have baby bird food on me, so would it be a good idea to try to see if the bird will take to a hand feeding session?

Dried fruits are very high in sugar and should be fed sparingly as treats. Healthier whole food options are fresh greens. In my experience birds like to nibble on the leaves for fun and for noms.

What type of pellet are you feeding? Some brands are horrible. Brands I personally trust are harrisons and roudybush.

Also your little peep is cute.

>>1987980

6 week old weaned cockatiels are not uncommon. Should be fine. Feed veggies, pellets and seeds now.

My retarded budgie doesn't eat anything that is not millet or a houseplant.

I buy him a budgie seed mix, and she just picks out millet and leaves the rest of the seeds. She also won't eat fruit or veggies, but she will eat those parrot sticks treats.

Still, most of her diet consists of plant leaves and millet even though I offer her a variety of food.

Fuck is wrong with her?
>>
>>1989440
Sounds like a normal budgie raised on a poor diet. Try forcing him to get used to a quality pellet, that way he can get all the nutrition he needs without being choosy/selective.
>>
>>1989443
I'm thinking of trying the following:
tomorrow morning, before the budgie wakes up, I'll remove her birdseed and replace it with finely diced bananas and apples. That will be her only food for several hours so hopefully she'll be so hungry she'll eat it. Later on I'll give her seeds. Sounds good?
>>
>>1989447

Stupid.

Budgies eat seeds, why the fuck would you force fruit?
>>
>>1989462
because an all seed diet is shit for them.
>>
>>1989447
I used to make treats from mashed bananas mixed with seeds and sundry them for my quacker, that might be an idea.
>>

>>
>>1989464
its actually not. you are personifying animals too much.
>>
>>1989488
it is.

if you feed your bird an all seed diet you're neglecting it.
>>
>>1989488
All seed diet on captive birds often leads to fatty liver disease and a lack of nutrients that they cannot get from seeds. In the wild, parakeets get a variety of foods as well as a ton of exercise flying. I really hope you are just a troll, or else you are need to take a break from the Internet and stop spreading false information.
>>
>>1989447
No. Don't overfeed fruit. Fruit is a treat. It's just sugar and fiber. Get a quality pellet like Harrison's or roudybush. Their websites will offer information on how to introduce the new diet. Vegetables are also better than fruit. Leafy greens in particular.

I have the same problem as this guy, my budgie eats all his seeds from his seed/pellet mix then stops. It really doesn't help that my mother replaces it with more mix because "He ate it all." Should I just leave the rest of the mix for him to eat, or what?
>>
>>1989618
use pellets only for daily feeding. monitor the amount of food eaten, dont keep filling the bowl. use seeds occasionally for treats and training.
>>
>>1989464
>>1989491

It strongly depends on the bird species as well.

The point I made was that forcing fruit is fucking ridiculous. How often do birds find fruit in the wild?

"Fruits are not rich in anything but energy, which seeds are also enriched in. In fact, in terms of nutrient content, fruits are primarily an expensive source of water and sugar. Vegetables are a richer source of important nutrients such as amino acids and vitamins.”
>>
>>1989490

Theoretically if you were feeding them (wild) seeds and they were in a large aviary, an almost all seed diet could be fine, supplemented with a small bit of vegetables.

The issue is that people stick them on a high energy diet in a tiny cage so they expend no energy and the seeds we give them are a bit meh.

Yeah, forcing fruit is a dumb idea. If a bird owner wants to force anything, might as well be a variety of vegetables.

I make a vegetable mix for my birds. I chop up a whole bunch of in-season vegetables of various colors (eg: capsicum, spinach, swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot) and grains like couscous, wholemeal pasta and quinoa. Just blend it up in a food processor and freeze in portions.

The birds love the variety and it is healthy/enriching for them too.

Parrots can live on an all seed diet, but I don't think they would be at their best. Just like how we can survive on, but wont feel that great, living on junk food like instant noodles and pizza.

This is a common problem a lot of people have. it can be very challenging and takes a lot of patience. The key is to not give up, even if it seems hopeless. I personally think it is always worth it for the bird's well being.

Letting the picky birds watch other birds eat vegetables works well, but not everyone has a vegetable eating bird lying around.

This topic is commonly discussed. Plenty of ideas on google.

alright. Ill look into this. One more thing though. I'm not sure what happened, but for all intents and purposes, the cockatiel is afraid of people. She is just barely calm enough when I change her food and water, but she freaks out if I try anything aside from that, like putting cuttlebone or cleaning her cage. Can I still domesticate her or is she not gonna let me near her anymore?

It is always possible to tame a wild cockatiel, but depending on how old she is and how bad her past experiences with people are, it can be difficult. You will need to do some research and reading up on correct taming methods. Maybe even invest in some bird taming information.

I know that the staff at birdtricks.com have had success taming and training previously neglected and abused parrots, but they sell their methods as a means for income. They sell DVD's and books. There are a few digital files too. Im not sure if the digital files I have will be useful, but here is one.

http://www.birdtricks.com/parrotcare.pdf

There are other companies that have good bird taming/training resources for sale as well, but I am most familliar with birdtricks.

Clicker training has been invaluable to me personally in taming my 'wildish' aviary-bred birds. Trick training is a great bonding exercise.

Check out the parrot whisperer or birdtricks youtube channels too. They have some valuable information.

My two budgies, one male and one female, get along most of the time. They usually only fuss when one wants the other to move over at the food bowl.

But whenever I start to put a sheet over their cage for bedtime, and a little bit after the cage is covered, the male starts making fussy little chitters and chases the female around and sort of pecks at her. She doesn't retaliate and he doesn't hurt her. It used to be the other way around when we first introduced the two (the female is older), but she stopped a good while ago. So why is the male doing this?

I do have some concerns though, is it regular for newly weaned cockatiels to have some patches where they haven't gotten feathers in yet? I noticed that under her wings there's some spots where she doesn't have feathers.

i have a flightsuit and an aviator for my green cheek, the flightsuit is just a diaper which is great for going in stores and such with her but in all honesty the ones you buy do have a big design flaw... and i'm actually planning on altering it or making some based off it to fix the issue, cuz while it is usable, and she can get adjusted easily i don't care for the velcro in the back... it could be more flexible, and there could be less of it, but with alterations it would be great, but only as a diaper so she doesn't do something like hang off me and shit on the floor in a store...

the leash part is actually horrible though, and i won't use it... i tried it once when i couldn't find her aviator, and she hated it as much as i did (it's a huge piece of velcro to wedge in between all of the velcro in the back with a leash attached) so i ended up just taking her out for a walk with just the flightsuit and no leash cuz she generally stays on my shoulder

but cuz i'm uncomfortable with the idea of taking her some places without a leash, i also have the aviator... you can actually adjust it so the leash is in the back rather than the front, but i haven't noticed a huge difference either way

but yeah if you're looking for a leash get an aviator, but if you want a diaper get a flightsuit...

I don't own a bird but I've taken up bird watching recently. Bought a feeder and some basket seed cakes and whatnot and have just been observing. See if you can guess where I live based on these sightings in the past two weeks:

Dark-eyed Junko (most common and numerous, very friendly birds)
Scrub Jay (hear them all the time, seldom visit feeder)
Spotted Towhee (occasionally)
Steller's Jay (got one that keeps visiting every morning, gorgeous bird)
Red-winged Blackbird (a small flock of these visited just earlier today, first I saw of them)
Anna's Hummingbird (still have a couple of these lingering around but they've mostly moved on, loads of them in the summer though)
Downy Woodpecker (just had a couple of these today, they only recently showed up after I set up the big seed cake basket)
Red-breasted Nuthatch (infrequent visitors, very bold)
Black-capped Chickadee (small buggers, only recently managed to ID them because they looked similar to the junkos at first)
American Robin (prefers worms, hate them because they shit on the patio furniture the most)

Close to the coast in either Oregon or Washington.

If I'm right, some of the Anna's Hummingbirds will stick around all winter. Keep your hummer feeder up.

He's quite new and young, so he just spends most of his time jumping around his cage and having cosy sits
He gets annoyed if we don't sit next to him with our face jammed against the bars so he can cuddle up to us, but he is still wary of big things ;w;
He's a cute little thing

you alright lads
been thinking about getting a pigeon recently, and i want to keep it as a housebird. i only want one. i spend the majority of my time in my office but never really have to do hardcore work where i need 100% concentration, so i think it would be cool to have a bird companion that i can look after.
i have a few questions:

-what is a pigeon like to own?? i plan on getting a small dog sized cage it can sleep in, and the majority of time it will be able to fly around my room or just waddle along the ground.

-are 'pigeon pants' really that good or do the birds just hate them? it seems like they are a little too good to be true.

-for one bird, how often do you have to clean up their shit? do they shit a lot?

-since i want it to be a housebird, it needs to be very comfortable with me since we will spend a lot of time together. for this reason, should i try and find a baby bird (seems to be extremely hard to do) or can i just buy one thats a few months/years old? what would happen if i bought a bird that was used to living in an aviary with a flock of other birds?

-could i let the pigeon out of the house while i am in the garden? i know homing pigeons can always find home but i've heard other breeds can get lost easily. will it take off flying the instant i let it go, or will it generally stay near me?

-i have a mini schnauzer as well. the two animals wouldnt ever come in contact unless i wanted them to, and she is quite well trained for me. would the site of the dog always freak the bird out, or would it get used to it? i am happy to keep the dog out of my office, but would like it if both could be in the room without any sort of quarrel. i just don't want it living in constant fear.

-what's it like cleaning pigeon shit out of a carpet? does it hold itself together well or is it just sloppy gooey mess?

if you could answer any of these questions id appreciate it.
>>
>>1995177
Have you brought him out of his cage to hang out with you? That's what I would do. Dove cuddles sound nice.
>>
>>1995199
1) while you can let it fly around the room, you should be prepared to have poop around the room as well.
2) i dont recommend them, the bird might not like it, and even if it does, if you dont change them often, poop stuck to feathers is a real pain.
3) birds poop alot.
4)you dont want a baby bird, ever. you want a bird thats been weened and socialized. the 2nd one might be hard, but the 1st is absolutely necessary and you probably wont be able to find a baby bird from any reputable dealer anyways. older birds and birds that are used to flocks can adapt to its new life style, but you should consider extra mental and physical activity.
4) i dont recommend leaving the pigeon out when youre not there. it might be safe, it might not be. im not willing to take the chance. birds can get hurt rather easily. as always the temperament of the bird will decide whether or not it was stay near you or not.
5)i also recommend keeping the dog away, it might be okay, but you never know. a dog wanting to play with it can easily hurt or kill it.
6) dont have birds when you have a carpet.
>>
>>1995199

I don't know that I'd recommend a pigeon, they poop a lot and don't do anything particularity interesting.

As an outside bird they're pretty cool and very chilled. But inside?

I live in Beaverton, Oregon. So very close guess on your part. Also I don't have a feeder for the Hummingbirds, I just have a lot of Jasmine plants and other flowering bushes that are going out of season. Should maybe look into getting a feeder, I imagine hummingbird feeders will be easier to squirrel-proof.

Considering getting a bb gun or something to scare him off.

I'm kinda like OP.
Tiel or GCC? I've had a budgie and she was not cuddly enough for me and these two seem like cuddly birds. I'm okay cleaning cages but kinda lazy with my own room. I'm not sure I can handle the dust a tiel might cause.

I'd like a bird that's not too afraid of new things. I can understand being afraid of humans but I've had birds never touch anything but fingers, perches or seeds. It might have been that they were poorly socialised. All of them were untamed when I got them.

When it comes to appearance I like the GCC more but they're a lot harder to find in my area. I found someone offering an apparently hand-fed one born in february. Is that a good age? She said she hasn't handled it in a while and that she would retrain him. That sounds bad but it's so god damn hard to find one around here.

You seem to have quite a few cockatiels and green cheeks in here. I'd like your opinion.

my green cheek was born feb 1st, but i've had her since she was almost 2 months old so idk what she'd be like otherwise...

she's really sweet though, and likes going new places and meeting new people (she'll climb onto someone's shoulder and preen them as soon as she meets then) + really cuddly...

and pretty much everyone who's met her has wanted a bird just like her after interacting with her

my s/o originally hadn't even wanted me to get her, but now he walks around with her whenever he's home going on about how much he loves her, and prefers her to any pet he's ever had too...

he's actually had a cockatiel, i haven't so i can't really say much about them... i know he loved his, but i also know that it was nowhere near as affectionate as our green cheek is... but she was handtame and a baby when we got her so that could be why
>>
I lost access to my turquoise green cheek in the divorce. The misses loves the bird as much as I do and I know will take care of her but still it hurts. I am thinking of getting another bird to fill the void of losing my best feathered friend.

Now, I love green cheeks, they're are pretty much perfect. Quiet, affectionate and can be content to spend hours alone in the cage when I am at work.

Are there any other species that fit that bill?

I loved my bird but since she was so small I was always afraid I'd break her in half by accident, are there any larger parrot that have a similar personality while not being loud and not prone to going insane?

There's been this pigeon nest on my garden for a while, there are two little pigeons already out their eggs there.
Thing is there was a big storm and rain today and the mother pigeon isn't there now, they all got wet and it's night already.
I'm just letting them be, it's probably going to continue raining and i don't know if the pigeon is coming back. What should i do if it doesn't?

My 2 cockatiels.
The one on the left looks like a lutino, but actually is a clear pied. I got him in may of this year.
A while ago he stayed at my nephew and his cockatiel for a week while I was on vacation. It seems like the two birbs were having great fun together. When he came nake home again, I noticed he was more quiet than before (especially in the first few weeks). Also, I started to work full-time lately, and felt for him.
So I decided to get him a friend and found the beautiful cock on the right. It was the latest bird to hatch from its nest, and was neglected by his parents. When I got him he weighed 54 grams and could barely stand and eat. He needed a lot of care and love. Now, a few weeks later he is 85 grams and in great shape. While I refer to him as a male, I'm not sure if its a male or female.
He and my other tiel have become best friends.
>>
What are the differences in behavior between a male and a female tiel? Which is more affectionate (as in which seeks your touch the most)? Are female hormones a problem?

Males are louder and more fun. They have entertaining personalities. Can be taught to whistle tunes.

Females are more laid back and not willing to engage in playful behavior. They are also more gentle. More boring than males but very loving.
>>
>>1996700
Oh my gosh, picking feather sheathes is such a great pleasures. It has the same satisfaction as popping blackheads and picking at scabs.
>>
>>1997734
Not sure whether this is solely related with gender.
The way they are socialised and the way they grow up is very important.
Males will be more vocal and more playful in general. Females will 'brabble' instead of singing. They most often will also be more 'relaxed'.
However, my male tiel is very affectionate. He will 'demand' scratches, rest in my neck while laying on the couch, and jump on my shoulder and go wherever I go. The same was true for the male tiel I had before.

Females can develop hormonal problems and lay eggs while not being 'pregnant'. This can also lead to egg binding.

My sister has a GCC and I have a cockatiel.

I think that GCC's seem more "intelligent," in that they will eat with their feet, and will manipulate objects. I like their coloring scheme as well, since they've got green, red, and blue. The GCC however also has a biting problem (of course this depends on the bird), and it will tear off skin. This is also proof of its intelligence, since it's developed specific strategies to lure unsuspecting strangers to try to pet it and then tear into their fingers. Their screeches are also louder and more ear piercing.

My female cockatiel was handfed and tamed, so is very sweet, and most importantly doesn't try to bite my fingers off at every chance. She's more interested in preening toys, while the GCC likes to just carry/shake/bite things. She's also not as loud, but that depends on the gender. She's way more cuddly as well, but she doesn't seem as smart as GCCs. I know they are supposed to produce dust, but I live in a small studio and have never noticed anything.

All in all, I think the personality depends on of it was hand fed. If you like GCCs, I would go for it, they are very cute, just make sure it doesn't bite!
>>
>>1998108
I find that female cockatiels are very gentle with their beaks. I treat my two girls like crap and roughandle them from time to time, and they still don't give me a good nipping. They are so lovable.

I have known males to be a bit fiercer with those face pliers.

Green Cheeks are capable of a much nastier bite than cockatiels, but are more fun and interactive than cockatiels.
>>
>>1998108

my green cheek went through a nippy phase when she started her first molt... she drew blood, after a month or so that stopped (with major improvements even after the first week) cuz i spent a lot of time working with her and she learned things like "no," "be nice," and how to play bite and nip without causing pain much less draw blood... she can be bratty and put a bit of pressure (no worse than a pinch) sometimes, but it's not too bad... and it's usually just like, her being jealous of my phone or getting overexcited while playing

they're definitely nippy, but they're smart too so they understand and catch on quickly when they shouldn't do something...

and idk how affectionate a cockatiel is, but she's super affectionate and friendly too... that seems like a matter of spending time with them and bonding...
>>
>>1998173
I second everything in this statement.
My GCC hates toes for some inexplicable reason and I've been woken up from naps when she jumps down off her cage and digs into my big toe.
>>
>>1998261
The first week or so that I had my GCC she would bite harder than I think she intended to. She was very friendly and affectionate, but she would constantly bite moles and stuff on the back of my neck and make them bleed. After a few days of saying 'no biting' while holding her beak and then putting her back in her cage for 10min+ she got used to it very quickly and hasn't bitten me hard sense. Even though she doesn't bite hard anymore she constantly has to chew gently on stuff - probably because she is still weaning.

My wife used to have cockatiels, I haven't. But she says going forward she would choose GCC because they are very affectionate and intelligent and more interactive than tiels.

I am sure Tiels make great pets too though - so really get whatever you think will best suite you.
>>
>>1998438
>My GCC hates toes for some inexplicable reason
My sister's GCC attacks our mother's feet, and only our mom's feet.
>>
>>1998438
both of my green cheeks would atack my feet whenever they could.
>>
>>1998526

mine has always been gentle with moles and such, she only really bit hands when she was in her biting stage actually...

that and pulling on jewelry and piercings was an issue (now she knows what "let go" means)

my s/o had a cockatiel as a kid and has said they're great, but not the same as our green cheek now... but that's just a sample size of one of each so idk...

>>1998597
>>1998620

mine has only nipped my feet once... and that was just playing the way she does with my hands, but she was on the floor which is rare for her, it was gentle at least

i've heard other people mention it (not on 4chan) though, so i guess it tends to be a thing...
