Questions that don't deserve their own thread. I'll start:

Is there anywhere I can read about the body language of spiders?
>>
>>1982238
I suppose you're talking about the courtship dances some spiders(most notably wolf and jumping spiders) have? Most popular works will only offer brief descriptions, so I guess you'll have to find some nice academic ethological journal that specialises in spiders. You can find some nice recordings of these dances on youtube, too.

My turn: Can anyone recommend some nice articles on eusociality in spiders? I've been wanting to learn about it for a long time, yet can't find much material.

>>1982414
I think he's talking about catching and identifying birds.
>>
>>1982415
Then what does "losing a bird" mean? That you accidentally kill a bird when branding it, or that one of the birds you've banded dies? Unless in the former case, I can't see why a banded bird dying would be worse than a non-banded one dying.

I thought he meant "bird bonding", as in befriending wild birds. Then it would make more sense to mourn them.
>>
>>1982433
I assumed he meant that one of his favorite banded birds died. Maybe he'll explain what he meant when he returns.
>>
>>1982412

Are you permitted to band? Civilian banding is illegal in the US and really bugs certain organizations and they will go after you if they figure it out.
>>
>>1982433
>>1982440

No, it died while in the process of being banded from stress. When we pulled him out of the bag he looked alright, but after we got the band on him he started panting, and in the middle of measurements started sticking his tongue out. We cut measurements short, didn't even get a blood or feather sample from him, and decided to let him go. I was walking him back to the capture sight when I noticed he hadn't moved or blinked in a while, and sure enough he was gone.

I think what really got me is we got his mom and dad in the same net. They thrashed and squawked the whole time I was detangling him, and I told them I wasn't going to hurt him. I lied to them. ;-;

>>1982488

Of course. This was part of a study done by my professor at my college. Papers were all in order.

So I'm trying to teach my dog to heel, but whenever he gets a treat he just rushes ahead, and then when I am supposed to keep the leash tight until he comes back to me, it's like he doesn't understand he has a leash on, so he keeps pulling. Any tips?
>>
Should you use your dog's name before every command you give him?
>>
>>1984175
Increase the duration required of him to earn a treat, and when he chooses on his own to pay attention give him a jackpot reward (either a really good treat or a few of his normal treats one after the other) and lots of praise. Teach him when he gets ahead that he must back up to where you are to get to continue. Also, you don't necessarily need to always reward him with treats because getting to walk is very rewarding in itself.
>>
>>1984221
You should use your dog's name to get his attention, if you have his attention you don't need to say his name. One thing that helps is if you use a different tone with him than if you are talking normally. That way he can differentiate between you just talking and you giving a command.

Whenever I try to cuddle my dog while he is in his cage he growls but I still do it anyway because I want him to see I mean no harm.

today I tried to fix the blankets under him and he bit me was it my fault?

how do I get him to stop
>>
>>1985710

He obviously feels cornered.

Bring him out of the cage and then change his stuff.
>>
>>1985710

Don't come at your dog when its cornered in a cage. Don't hug a dog to try and calm it; there is evidence to suggest that most dogs don't like being hugged, but will tolerate it from the people in its life.

Do some research about signs of anxiety and fear in dogs. You might be surprised by some of the subtleties of dog body language. For example, most people think a wagging tail is always a sign of happiness, but depending on the height they wave it at, and the tempo it could mean fear or aggression
>>
What would you consider spoiling your dog? I don't want my pupper to grow up to be a brat.
>>
Two questions
My girlfriend is planning on getting a chinchilla.
Are they typically allergy causing pets? She was really allergic to her ferret and had to return him to the breeder.

How tall of a cage do they need? I've heard varying heights from other sources. How much would that kind of cage cost?
>>
>>1985723
>>1985731
thanks guys. For some reason him feeling cornered never dawned on me, I thought he was being possessive of the cage.
>>
>>1982412

No.

One of the master banders I work under says I'm not a pro until I do have one die on me, so I guess it's just inevitable.

I did have a barred owl actively predate two of my nets early this month, so I had two nets ruined and still had to extract two disemboweled catbirds.

>>
my dog accidentally ate a women's multivitamin. will he be okay?
>>
>>1985710
many dogs are kennel/cage reactive. they feel very protective of "their space", especially if it's very small. I work at a shelter and that's why some dogs freak out if someone walks in front of their kennel but they're perfectly fine once they're on a walk or in a yard

and hugging tends to be instinctually unpleasant/stressful for them. some dogs just learn how to tolerate it/that their people like it
>>
>>1986104
do you him being possessive of his cage is an issue or I should just let it be? He also growls/barks when he has a bone, when people walk by the house, when I hug/coo another person etc.
>>
>>1985740
Their thick fur comes off easily, so that is an irritant.
They NEED fine particle dust baths, so that is an allergen too.

Cages should be tall as fuck with multiple levels and wide/long to accommodate activity. (About a hundred or more). You should also handle your chinchilla everyday and let it roam supervised.

They are extremely heat intolerant. So best in cold areas or you run up your AC Bill.
>>

Do dogs enjoy being petted or do they just put up with it? I don't own one myself, but I meet two different dogs on occasian, and neither of them really seek out to be petted, and when they get petted, they don't stay still as to say they want to keep being petted.
>>
I found a click beetle today that wouldn't click. Why is that?
>>
>>1986243
It's probably because they don't know you very well. Dogs are affectionate animals and like contact with their people but might be a little distant with less familiar folks. My dog is huge slut for attention and likes all sorts of pets and hugs, a dog I met once would get visibly upset when I stopped petting him and other dogs tend to let me get away with petting them but pretty much ignore me.
>>
>>1986283
Thanks, maybe you're right. See them like once a week.
>>
>>1986285
If you meet them outside, they might just be too busy with other things going on and aren't interested in pats at the moment.
>>
>>1986220
>do you him being possessive of his cage is an issue or I should just let it be?
depends. without seeing the behavior I don't know how severe it is, but personally I'd try teaching him there's no need to be so reactive, give him treats when he acts calm in there with you near, etc

>He also growls/barks when he has a bone
resource guarding

>when people walk by the house, when I hug/coo another person etc.
poorly socialized/trained

no offense man, but he just sounds like a badly trained and undersocialized dog. look up online how to socialize an adult dog, along with resource guarding. that should help a bit
>>
Are collars safe for dogs? I prefer collars over harnesses simply for the aesthetics, but could it potentially hurt the dogs if the leash gets tight/is jerked?
>>
>>1986771

Yes, but dogs have much stronger necks than us. As long as he's decently trained not to pull hard you'll be fine.
>>
My cat has fleas, but the treatment my vet recommended doesn't work. I apply the topical drug at the nape, as prescribed, but I'm pretty sure she manage to rub it off on some shrub or piece of furniture.

Do you have any idea how I could make sure the medicine stays in place?

(She wouldn't tolerate a collar, btw)
>>
How do normal people raise dogs?

This might sound like a weird question but every rescue place I've looked into won't give you a dog unless you'll be home all day. I, like most normal people, work an 8-hour day and my bf does too. We have different days off so there are only 3 days of the week that we're both at work, is hiring a dog walker to come once on those days enough?

Everyone I know has a job. They also have dogs. Does everyone just crate their dogs while they're at work, even though the Internet says that's literally evil? Do people take time off to raise puppies until they can hold it for a full day? Help me understand, /an/.
>>
>>1986771
just use something like the freedom harness or another front leader. using a collar puts a crazy amount of pressure on their trachea and other major physical strain, plus can actually encourage pulling due to triggering their opposition reflex
>>
>>1986842
So you get two leashes to bother with? No thanks tbh
>>
>>1986826
I took a couple months off for my puppy and then took her to daycare every day when she was old enough. At a year and a half I transitioned her to staying home and I would come home on my lunch break, and finally at two I was able to leave her home alone segregated to one room.
>>
>>1986852
Just one that clips in the front.
>>
>>1986887
Ok, thanks for sharing anon. I guess I'll probably have to wait until I have a different job to get a puppy then. Oh well.
>>
>>1986780
Collars don't work, if its going outside it's basically getting new fleas jumping on it and re-infesting the house. Consider keeping him indoors more or ask your vet about an oral medication if they have any.
>>
Are dogs really what you can call protective, or is it something else? Anyone heard anything about this?
>>
>>1986826
"Normal people," more often than not, severely neglect their pets, so that isn't necessarily a good metric to go off of.
Newly acquired dogs and especially puppies are going to require far more attention and care than an adult dog who's settled in already.
>>
I'm talking to a guy selling a belgian malinois.
I've never had a dog before.
I've had a cat when I was young and I have a couple of hamsters.
I've been binge watching puppy training videos.
Is this a bad idea?
>>
>>1986932
Belgian malinois are the most dangerous dog, no?
>>
>>1986826
you're asking two different questions

can you adopt an adult dog while working full time? yes

can you adopt a puppy? hell no. that's way too much time leaving them alone while they're the equivalent to an infant

I work at a shelter and we adopt adult dogs out to people who work all the time. but puppies require so much more around the clock care that it isn't in the best interest of the animal at all
>>
>>1986942
I imagine it would depend on upbringing. I'm not going to train it to be an attack dog, though that is one of the traditional uses.
It's only half malinois. The other half is german shepard.
I've read that they're easy to train, also they look beautiful. I'm worried that I'm going to fuck up somehow, and he'll grow up traumatised or something. I've never had dogs before so I wanted to ask what the likelyhood of me screwing up? I don't want to fuck up a dog just because I was a tad lonely.

What is the proper way to punish your dog if he pulls or barks while walking?
>>
>>1987648
Ignore this advice. It is based on outdated theories that were proven untrue 10 years ago.

Just put the collar on and leave it on. When the pup is old enough to sit reliably, make the puppy sit and then put the dollar on. Do that before you take the pup on a walk. Eventually your pup will see putting the dollar on as something good.
>>
So I'm not really familiar with dogs and I am only watching my brother's dog for a few days. I can't leave him alone for a second without having him start whining like a baby. Sometimes he manages to open doors and follow me, be it inside or outside. I just need a break sometimes, and other times I need to do something, but he really doesn't like being alone. I doubt I can change him much for the short while I have him, but is there any way to calm him down? He's a 10 month old rottweiler.

Do you guys think telling my dog to go in his cage and give him a treat when he does every time someone walks by the house and he starts barking would be an effective way to get him to stop barking at them?

No. Only praise/ give treat when he stops barking for a few seconds. Forget cage. Sometimes a tug at the collar can help to shut him up.

>>1987629
Dogs lick because it's been reinforced as a good behavior, a dog will lick and as a result get attention. If you want your dog not to lick, pull away immediately and turn your attention away. When your dog stops trying to lick reward immediately with petting. Consider teaching your dog to lick on command.
>>
>>1987887
Stop in place when your dog pulls and encourage him back to your side. When he is calm and paying attention to you praise and reward by walking. Praise him when he walks loose-leash by your side, if he starts to walk ahead of you start to slow your pace and stop when he reaches the end of his leash. Alternate periods of loose leash walking and released walking where your dog can sniff at things as you walk, with commands to differentiate the two (I use "let's go" and "go on"). Always bring treats so you can practice obedience and reward in special situations like when he chooses to ignore distractions like squirrels, people, or other dogs. If he starts to go after a stimuli retreat to a distance where he will listen to you and reward for good behavior, then slowly move toward and past the stimuli and praise and reward when he chooses to ignore it.

All of this is going to take lots of time and practice, at least a month doing walks 4-5 times a week. You'll want to start off at home in your yard, then move to your neighborhood, and finish by working in busy and unfamiliar areas.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

It's done for aesthetics, but proponents of it will attempt to justify it by saying things like that (though I haven't heard those two before). The one I'm used to is that "cropped ears allow them to hear better."

In my opinion dobermans look better with their natural ears anyway.

Honestly, I'd say that dogs that get ignored more are much better behaved.

Having said that, you obviously need to give it tons of mental stimulation and take it for runs/walks.

But that begs the question, why would you get a dog?
>>

>But that begs the question, why would you get a dog?
I just always loved animals and my dream is pretty much to own a homestead with some goats, chickens, dogs and cats. I obviously care about them, but wouldn't want them to take over my day. I'd keep it for my own gratification and would expect it to snooze around when I'm not walking it, playing with it or training it.

>Honestly, I'd say that dogs that get ignored more are much better behaved.
I think you have a point. Because I'm sure they can learn to get overly excited if they are always given attention, especially the first time you run into them that day.

> I obviously care about them, but wouldn't want them to take over my day. I'd keep it for my own gratification and would expect it to snooze around when I'm not walking it, playing with it or training it.

Maybe start with a cat. It depends on the personality of the dog, but some just constantly beg for attention which may bother you. Either way good luck.

My Aunt/Uncle had outside dogs that they pretty much never gave attention to (as in they treated like farm dogs) that were perfectly behaved and just chilled outside all day.

Bird dogs are just retrieving animals, terriers will physically hunt themselves but usually used for pest control, coursing is also where the dog does the hunting but usually larger dogs, a pointer or deer hound will track and point out prey for you and some have the capacity to take the prey down too. A lot of dogs are good to become hunting companions but basically you will go to a lot of unnecessary effort trying to train in behaviours a hunting dog would have naturally. For hare and rabbits you can't really get a dog fast enough other than salukis, whippets and greyhounds so you could train a mastiff to want to catch rabbits, but he'd never be no friend of mine.
