684 KB,
Alright, so I live in my mother's basement and the other day, while I was working, I noticed this strange banging against my room's well window (the place where frogs tend to jump into and can't get out). During my break I decided to check it out. I was confused because there was nothing there except the weeds (which have been growing for years.) So I go back to work. Then it starts happening again and I still can't see anything in the weeds. After probably several hours of work and programming burnout, I decide to go and wait at the window for it to happen...

Don't have a pic to go with this but it'll have to do.

About three years ago my mother and I were driving home from work. We decided to take the back way after stopping at the gym; it's a two-lane road that turns into a four-lane after a stoplight. We pass that and I see, out my window, a snapping turtle that's the size of a large backpack trying to cross the road. In afternoon, rush hour traffic.

I shouted at my mom to turn around, she does, and we got stuck at the light we just passed trying to reach it. So I got out and haul ass across the...

So I'm thinking about getting a dachshund as my first dog.

Do anyone here own a dachshund? Got any insights or fun stories to share?

Never owned one but I looked after one when my friend and his gf went on holiday. She was the sweetest little creature I have ever seen, never played up and only required mild exercise before she napped. Very easy. His gf says that most of them are like this.

There was this one fucker that would bark at everyone and bite them... Hard. Fuck that dog.
>>

Make sure you keep them lean, extra weight can be hard on their backs. Don't let them jump up on the couch or bed either.

My grandpa has one and he's a sweetheart. Really great dog. Food crazy like most hounds.

Tl;Dr post petsmart / petco experiences good or bad

Is petsmart as bad as people make it out to be ? I have really mixed feelings my local petsmart is actually "okay" at taking care of some of the animals I got my first ball python there and the only problem with him was he a little cold but now that he's in my setup fr him he's doing fine.

I have to say, at least they're better than smaller pet deposit stores

There's a pet store near my house that sells dogs and cats for hundreds of thousands of dollars, they don't come with papers, and the dogs are kept in tiny cell like cages and they put 2 or 3 cats inside slightly bigger cages and stack them on top of each other. The parakeets are stacked next to and on top of each other as well. I've heard they get their animals from puppy and kitten mills

The Petsmart has a lot better setup. They have a cat room where they bring in cats...

Our petsmart doesn't have ferrets, but the petco near my grandfather's house does. They have Marshall (mill) ferrets in bedding (which they dont need- cloth would be better). I assume they never get time out, and theres way too many for the small cage they're in. I've seen them sleeping in litterboxes.
The one near my house is questionable. I'm not much of a rodent person but they seem pretty cramped in their cage. The cats also have super small enclosures, and I'm unsure if they have...

One of the two adopts cats out through the local Humane Society. Keeping cats in small cages is problematic no matter how well they are treatedoing, but still.

I cannot speak to herps or small mammals though.

3 MB,
Guys, I was walking outside today, and I've seen a dog with something strange on both ears. Looks like necrosis produced by canine scabies. The owner seems to be rarely at home, and the dog is always tied. Can I report this to the authorities?

Pic related. This is the best pic I took, he was always moving.

I'd call animal control or aspca or something anon. Poor dog.
>>
>>2159857

Are they... Maggots coming out of those ears?

I'm with >>2159859 , time to call the authorities, that's animal cruelty if they have left it to get that bad.
>>
>>2159883
Actually seems to be ticks. I already sent a mail to my nearest canine shelter, to see if they could help me.
Before that I've been asking around, and seems that the authorities will not give a fuck about it.

Btw, I've seen this dog around 2 weeks ago, and it was ok. Does it get this bad in 2 weeks?

I'm in possession of a couple of piranha jaws. They have been cleaned, but not by me (so i don't know how). They still smell though. Any tips on how to get rid of the smell? And also maybe on keeping them from discoloring too much?

>cleaned, but not by me (so i don't know how)
pull the teeth out and super glue them back in place

>rid of the smell?
dry it using an airtight container and desiccant
https://amzn.com/B0029EGUNG
seal it with an aerosol clear coat
https://amzn.com/B0009X8LZ4

>discoloring too much?
keep out of direct sunlight
>>
put em in a glass of chlorine, so they are completely under water.
But don't put in 100% of chlorine, just 60/40 chlorine/water. It should get rid of the smell and make it even cleaner.

How many times a day should you normally scoop the dead fish out of your aquarium?
Also, if I just leave the dead fish the living ones can feed on the meat right?

what i usually do is pull out the deads when i see them and mash them up with my boot heel. when they are a thin pastey material, i mash it with some flake food and drop it in the tank. the others love the treat.

Reconsider keeping fish as a hobby if you even approach having to replace fish daily.
Remove them as soon as possible you dense fuck.

Usually I scoop the dead fish on wednesday, and make a trip to the store to restock on friday. I wish goldfish were hardier, but w/e, they're inexpensive

So my I'm left for a day or two with a Yokshire terrier that has a bit milky eyes, already.
He's quite uppity, really trustful but seems a bit borred/ sad.

I don't really know what I can do with him.
I went outside already and he was doing dog things... now he's laying next to me... sometimes he's switching places.
I pet him at times.

Get some high quality treats and get him to love you. Make his owners feel bad that their dog seems to love someone else more in two days.

new bird at farm.jpg
22 KB,
anyone know a lot about birds? I went to my family farm earlier today and there was a bird that I've never seen before. I'm curious if this new bird might eat grain or cause other problems. I couldn't figure out what it was from online bird identification programs because I couldn't search for certain parts of the bird.

picture related: the bird looked similar to this but with certain changes described below.

it had a small bit of red on it's head feather/fluff. the foot had 4 toes so it could grab a branch from front and back to wrap around....

the bird I saw looks very close in overall shape as that but is brown and spotted. the red on it's head is right above the eyes, middle of head. that part is hard to see as I didn't notice it until I was holding the bird.

the farm where I saw a bunch of them is south of Lloydminster which is on the border of Alberta and Saskatchewan

Boxer thread.

Post'em, stories, etc.

My boxer Pharrah(previous owners named her) had her for about 8 years now. Super playful, had a tumor scare last year, but it's benign.

I really want to own a boxer some day. They can be absolutely beautiful and total love bugs. All the boxers I met when I worked at a vet clinic were so kind regardless of their owner's lifestyle. To be fair though, owners who at least bring their pet to the vet are often times much better than those who don't.

I'm living the college life though and can't afford a place with a big yard for big dogs.
>>
>>2159291
They are worth the wait imo. Really great family dogs.
>>
>>2159294
Once I'm settled down enough to start a family I'm sure I'll add a boxer to the house as well. My current dog (GSD, sheltie, bloodhound mix according to a DNA test) is such a brat and I have no clue what he'll be like around kids. He's going to be old by the time that happens though so maybe he won't even care.

I moved to a new place, my cat keeps shitting in the bath.

How long until she stops doing this?

She has a litter tray by the door, and she pisses in that. I'm going to install a cat flap at the weekend. I don't want to lock her out of the bathroom since I don't want her to shit in my bed or something.

Fill the bathtub with an inch or two if water. The problem will solve itself.

She'll figure it out eventually. Stress from moving. At least it's just in the tub where it's easy to clean, so just deal with it.

I was outside yesterday near a stream filled with dragon flies, crawdads, frogs, etc and picked up a rock. Under the rock was something like pic related, i didn't see the tail and tried my best to draw it with memory. It had longer antennae than other crayfish and it retreated into a burrow once i picked up the rock. If it helps i'm in North New Jersey.
