Don't try to "impress her." that's high school level garbage. I would take her to a park or something and have fun for the day. And then, if it was a particularly fun and memorable day, I would try to drop the news. Just don't drop it on her like a brick, ease into it and make sure she is in a good mood. And don't try to salvage the relationship, either. If she stops having anything to do with you just because you admitted your feelings to her, then she doesn't respect you or your feelings and she never had your best interest at heart.
Also, keep in mind OP that there are other girls out there with the same interests that will click with you just as well as she does or better, and also remember that cute girls are a dime a dozen. Even if she says no, don't hold it against her and don't act like it's your loss because at the end of the day she shouldn't be what completes your life, but rather she should be what makes it better.

Had a really close female friend for two years. Realized that i should have dated her from day one. Tried for about a month to give her hints, she seemed oblivious. Just gave up on it. Honestly, just tell her how you feel. It's a long shot, but there's much else to do. At the very least, if you handle it well it shouldn't have much of an impact on your friendship if she's not interested.
