I joined the naval reserve about a million years ago, and am finally getting onto a ship!

But I have some questions about preparing for it, and living aboard:

* Is there anything I should bring other than the obvious? (uniforms, laptop maybe, a good book, military paperwork/training packages, extra razors, etc.) Sewing kit? Extra velcro straps for attaching things to other things? Safety glasses? A tub of varnish? My lucky mug? A stack of 360 games? My own STANAG magazines? A variety of audio jack adaptors?

* I'm a fag; I'm no SJW or anything, constantly getting asked about slaying pussy and about girlfriends back home annoys me. Should I get it out of the way and say I'm gay early on, or am I just gonna get beat up or raped or discharged for "Lack of Camaraderie" or something?

* While on ship, other than my job, is there anything I should pay extra attention to keeping done or away from? I already know the rules about making coffee for the mess, but is there any other typical ship etiquette I should know of? I don't smoke and I'm not That Guy who'll carry around cartons of smokes just to make friends, btw.

what country, what rank, what will your job be on the ship, what is your previous military and nautical experience

>what country,
Canada. I'll give you that much.
>what rank,
PERSSEC
>what will your job be on the ship,
OPSEC
>what is your previous military and nautical experience
PERSSE-- Okay, I've been on a training vessel before, but it's only a crew of 20-ish and can be sailed by a (very overworked) crew of 4-6. I know well enough to check the weather before getting crunk lest I have to throw up in the heads all day because there's a rainstorm the next day. I also kinda understand the processes of going alongside and leaving port, but that's all.
Of course, this isn't CoD or a JRPG and I'm young, so this is my first military job.

how are you going to ask for advice on this and then not even tell me if you're an officer or enlisted

what the hell's the matter with you?
>>
alright whatever, if you don't want to be helpful I'll do what I can

I was in the US navy active duty and enlisted so what I say may or may not actually be of any use to you at all. There really isn't anything you need to bring with you other than the obvious, I never did. If you forget something important you'll be able to get it on the ship, make sure you have a way of locking up everything you bring with you because things tend to disappear if they aren't.

no one will care that you're gay, just do your job and it wont matter. When people start talking about wives/gfs/sexual conquests you can casually mention it. I knew plenty of gay guys on my ship and while this was after don't ask don't tell was reversed it was still well before CURRENT YEAR and no one had any problems with it. And if they did they kept it to themselves, everyone in my section was very close we looked out for eachother.

As for ship etiquette just don't be a skell. Do your job and know your limits. If you're an officer respect the senior enlisted and try to learn something, they're the ones watching your ass, that said don't let them walk over you if you're unsure of yourself since you're still the one in charge. If you're enlisted just listen to your supervisor, do your job without too much bitching, and try to learn something.

Good luck shipmate.

Okay, fine, jeez, I'm enlisted. I'm not sure how the very basics of etiquette would change between enlisted and officers* but whatever. And being my first time on a REAL ship, I'm of very low rank. I'm officially an OS, but technically have all the

*I don't mean this in a condescending way, I really do mean the very basic things of just living in such close quarters, and the basics of shipboard life and basic shipboard evolutions that everyone participates in.

>>17145391
sorry fampai i was shitposting elsewhere

>no one will care that you're gay, ... casually mention it
/k/ tells me the literal opposite so should I err on the side of political correctness or on that of the status quo (of banging tons of bitches in every port)

>If you're enlisted just listen to your supervisor, do your job without too much bitching, and try to learn something.
I can do that. That's what I've been doing.

As for ship etiquette just don't be a skell.
what the fuck is a skell

and i did google it, either its a homeless person, or the XenoBlade X equivalent of an Orbital Frame from ZoE, so im very confused
>>
>>17145426
a skell is someone who does the absolute bare minimum to get by and only looks out for himself, he'd screw over his shipmates if it would mean less work for him

stop listening to /k/, most of that board doesn't even have guns I'd bet most of the people posting in the military threads were never actually in it themselves, but who knows. Anyway I wouldn't initiate with info about your sexuality but if the topic is already sexual its a pretty good moment to broach it. Seriously though, nobody cares as long as you don't come onto them. I always recommended to people not get into relationships on the ship but ofcourse they did, and they always regretted it. Don't make the same mistake.

You say you're an OS, in the US navy that's operations specialist is it the same in canada? I was a quartermaster so I was up on the bridge at the wheel and doing navigation. There were a lot of OS guys up there too working the radars and other stuff, they were cool. Its nice working on the bridge since the captain and senior officers will know who you are (which is both good and bad though) and when shit goes down you're right there.

you may want to watch this documentary btw if you haven't, it's really good and gives a pretty realistic view of what ship life is like though I'm sure your ship will be a bit different since its so much smaller

>a skell
Noted. That is not who I am when I'm at work; I figure, if I'm going to do something, I may as well do it the best I can (for then) because it means less work later. Work hard now so I can have a long weekend of nothing breaking, nah mean

>You say you're an OS, in the US navy that's operations specialist is it the same in canada?
No, it means "Ordinary Seaman", the lowest naval rank. I don't know US ranks, but if it means anything, an OS epaulet is blank except for "Canada" written at the bottom of it.

I am in an ops trade though. I'm a faggot nerd, you see

>stop listening to /k/,
no
I'll avoid banging any shipmates though

Not jealous. That's a thing I got told a lot and learned quick; make friends with the cooks. This documentary is also pretty interesting. It's the US and a much larger ship than Canada even wants to have, but it seems relevant. Thanks!

>No, it means "Ordinary Seaman", the lowest naval rank
ah ok I see, that's the british navy style ours is a lot different. Anyway if you can get into whatever job has you working navigation I recommend it, its fun.

>I figure, if I'm going to do something, I may as well do it the best I can (for then) because it means less work later. Work hard now so I can have a long weekend of nothing breaking, nah mean
that's an admirable attitude, just be warned there's a saying in the navy "there's never enough time to do it right, only enough time to do it over and over and over again". Hope you like chipping paint.

here, have a silly video a few of my friends in the deck maintenance department made to show the daily experience of life as junior enlisted
