Islam, Christianity and Judaism all share the same tenements of ideology if not theology. All are prone to abstract violence against other religions using faith to justify their actions. Yet nobody will ever know if that faith has divine support.
I believe in Jesus. I believe he was a visionary leader in times that required someone like him to make a difference, a man to change the social politic and thus eventually the ruling politic.
Just like Mohammed, Jesus was a canny study of the nature of man and knew the only way to invoke change was to make mankind fearful of the consequences of not following his doctrine. Given the times and the nature of the human condition to let mob behaviour overrule common sense, humans are irrational when allowed to rule themselves, the fear of an omnipotent deity was possibly the only way to force change.
The only reason for it to exist today is the entrenched power of the church and their unwillingness to cease influence and control over people. Whereas it was needed in the times of Jesus it is now only a legacy and the tool of disenfranchised men to exert their will upon others, beit Catholicism or evangelism, the motive is control and not the betterment of man as a whole.

In those days, many physically saw Jesus face-to-face, but they still rejected Him. In fact, they spit on him and assaulted Jesus physically.
