I'm planning to move out from my parent's house. Any hacks on living cheap/smart?

So far it looks like I'll be moving in with my friend, our income is 120-120, rent for a liveable apartment with 2 rooms is around 130. (no currency for easier relating) Let's say that is quite fair, at least for 2 people, leaving us with half of our incomes.

I can spare 10 on not using public transportation and going by bicycle, which is nice. For other stuff, well, I'm not really prepared, and I could use some tips and hacks. What things can we save money on, how to live smart, etc.

My ideas involve America because dollar store.

Otherwise- Buy bulk food, make your own coffee, stay away from drugs and alcohol, and above all, focus on making more money.

Two ways to have more money: Save money, or Make more. If you make nothing, saving won't get you anything, will it?

Oh. And Never- EVER- consider a PayDay loan.

Make your own food, don't eat out. I don't know what it is but it seems like people in our generation eat out ALL THE TIME. It's so fucking easy to learn to cook and it's fun too.

Depending on your city, there might be organizations that provide free food to low-income families. There's one in mine and you don't have to register or prove how poor you are or anything, I see college kids there all the time. You just show up, and there's huge stocks of surplus goods from the grocery store that they'd otherwise be throwing out. Perfectly good stuff, too, just close to expiring, but not all moldy or anything. Make some inquiries because you can eat way better than you normally might (fresh veggies, fruit) if there is something like that.

It's winter. Make sure that your place is well-insulated so that your heating bill isn't sky-high. If you have a huge window that heat is escaping through, you can always hang a blanket in front of it when you're not using it. Yeah, it looks pretty "bachelor pad", but it helps.

Its not about skill level for cooking, its convinience. Also it saves time.

>renting
>half of your income

Bad idea. Rent should be 1/3rd your income max.

Thanks, sounds good. We were planning on cooking at home rather than eating out, now I've got some feedback on the idea. :) Potato and pasta based meals are pretty cheap and easy to make, also traditional in our country so that could save us money. Great winter tip!

Not really. A single young person living very frugally could go over 1/3. Maybe evendors close to 1/2 of pre-tax income.

Its expensive. A large sandwich is anywhere from 7 to 9 bucks. You can easily get a few slices of cheese/meat from a deli and a loaf of bread for 6.

At least, where I live.

Yeah here's a hack: Account for food and bills when you move out. I'd be surprised if you saved a fourth of your money.

You can live almost indefinitely off rice and beans alone.

I just googled "Living cheap hints" and got a load of links. Some are for students, some for retired people. Read them all
