Iphone/Ipod cables, genuine ones at least, are so expensive because of Apples determination to make sure you use theirs.
A regular USB cable has four conductors. Apple's however have five, as well as an intergrated circuit inside one of the connectors. It doesn't offer any extra utility, rather the device uses the extra conductor to talk to the chip, which holds a crypto key, which in turn let's the phone know if it's connected to an Apple cable or a generic one.
That's why your phone will display the "This device is not supported" notification when you use a generic cable. It's also the reason you can't transfer data from your phone to your pc with a generic cable - not because the cable is faulty, but because it's Apple's way of making sure that you have to buy the cables that they sell for about a hundred times what they cost to manufacture.
All ima say is dont. I bought a cheap charger earlier, and my battery continued to drain while plugged in. I bought a 30 dollar belkan and charged up 15% in 20 minutes. Worse comes to worse, borrow one until you can get one that isn't cheap. I don't recommend buying an expensive or high quality one unless you have money.
