Hey /adv/.
TL;DR at bottom.

I really need help. The ceiling in my kitchen collapsed, and my landlord says that he wont do a thing about it. My roommates and I have only been here for the lesser half of 4 months, but the cause of the cave-in was a leaky pipe connected to the only toilet in the house. The damaged seems to be from years of water damage and it calls for the entire bathroom floor to be torn out and replaced due to black mold, that our landlord wont do anything about. He says that it is our responsibility to repair it. What do?

TL;DR- Landlord is trying to fuck my roommates and I with black mold that he most likely knew about before renting this house to us. What do? Pic related.

Do you have some sort of tenancy tribunal where you live?
>>
I don't believe so. However I was told that my best option would be to call the health department and also legal aid, to help comb through the lease.

I think your landlord is full of shit and wants to see if they can get you to fix it for them for free.

It sounds like a health issue either way. He should be inspecting the property so often to catch shit like mold that is possibly toxic. If it turns out to be toxic mold you could probably sue the shit out of him.

So would it be going to far to put our rent money into escrow until something is down about it?

done*

Say that your foot got hurt and it's the landlords fault for not doing anything about it (flop)

If you agreed to the terms he set out. Then you're fucked. Look at the contract.
>>
This is your landlords problem for not keeping up with maintenance.

Get free legal advice and let him know youll end up in court.

>>17324857 So the black mold is something I must deal with as well?

>>17324862 That may be so, but why wouldn't the repairs come out of the security deposit that I provided?

Call the city housing department. To legally rent a place, it has to be "habitable" - that is, it must meet basic legal definitions of can-be-lived-in. Working plumbing and a ceiling would seem to be part of the basic requirements, and landlord can be fined or closed down for not providing them.

Not sure about the USA but in the UK the landlord is 100% liable for the damage, coming from a landlord that has repaired a collapsed ceiling, it's not even a big job.
