personally, I'm at my most charming/least spergy when I go into a social situation thinking to myself "what do I have to prove to these people" (the answer being, of course, "nothing"). Everyone else is just trying to have a good time too, and newsflash: they're also a little insecure and nervous when meeting new people, that's just human nature.
