So yesterday at around 5pm PST, I was returning home from the supermarket when I noticed a police car tailing me. It was after about 3 minutes of this that I changed lanes to see if he would follow me. Immediately, he popped his lights on and pulled me over into the parking lot of a nearby ihop. I figured it was some sort of traffic stop and reached for my wallet to get my drivers license. It was just then that I looked up in my rear view and see four cops with guns drawn, yelling at me instruction on how to exit the vehicle. In a sheer state of panic I heeded every command shouted, lest I be shot. I exit the vehicle terrified as I'm being held at gunpoint, searched (with my permission), and handcuffed. I repeatedly asked what I had done wrong, with no explanation given. I gave them permission to search my vehicle and was escorted to the back of the squad car, with windows up in 100 degree weather. I sat bound with sweat stinging my eyes as I watched them search my entire vehicle. I was then read my rights. Afterward, it was then explained to me that a person in the area (that matched my description) was breaking into a vehicle nearby with a screwdriver. I explained in great detail that I went to the grocery store and was returning home. He then asked for someone he could contact to verify my whereabouts and corroborate my story. He called my grandmother and confirmed that indeed I was not the perpetrator. The other cops had left long ago by this point and the police officer that detained me, told me to get out of the car. He took the cuffs off, gave me his contact information, and left....
Needless to say, I'm kind of still in a state of shock. I also feel violated. I need advice on how I should legally take action or if that isn't an option, then what? I just can't let this go.
