It's a red flag because she likely adopted it as a boyfriend substitute. She'll say she just loves animals but she'll judge you if the animal doesn't like you. She'll judge you if you don't like the animal. She's so screwed in the head that the dog/horse/whatever is more important to her than you ever will be and she'll make time for her pet on a whim while you'll have to get in line and fight for her attention.
