Your priority should be to save money for a gym membership. This will get you access to a locker, to a shower and to drinking water. It costs substantially less than a living space and will cover your immediate needs. If you cannot hydrate yourself properly, cannot shower and cannot store your belongings in a safe space then your situation will only continue to spiral out of control.

All you need is a car, a sleeping bag, and a laptop computer. You can camp in the back of the car and park it just about anywhere, lock the doors, and surf the internet using a nearby wifi router if you can find one. You can shower for free in local college gyms (nobody is going to check your ID). You can go to google image search and look for the phrase "best bum signs ever" (without the quotation marks) and find tons of ideas for signs to hold up near areas where you panhandle for money. Just keep trying different ones til you discover an idea that works. Another option is to steal this guy's idea:

Basically it is survivable with a car. No car, OP? Then you give up all the bullshit pride that is stopping you and you go and beg someone for a place to stay. A friend, a relative, anyone. You do not want to be on the street.
Try the salvation army, or similar organisation, at the least they will have contacts or advice for you.

Why homeless?
My friend was homeless for 4 months, he slept in parking lots and other mostly abandoned at night places. Basically like him you want to stop being homeless as soon as possible, don't stagnate, try hard to find work fast and learn the ins and outs of your city so you know where to sleep and bathe, you're gonna have a tough time, but have hope and pull yourself from this darkest rut.

I did this for a while. You just have to park where cars are expected. Office building and mall garages are the best. once you go in you may have to stay in the car if the place has security. If they do, you put up black blankets on your windows so no one can see in.
