I've just been to see a room to rent. The guy is from my country and seems legit. However I have searched for what his name appears to be judging by his email address and can't find any evidence of him.
I've said I'll take the room and he said that's great and can we get things done this as soon as possible.
Although I'm prone to paranoia I don't want to get scammed here.
How can I ask and what can I ask for, in a way that isn't rude, to see something that will give me grounds to get my money back or something if this guy is a scammer?
He isn't the landlord and I'll be sub-letting from him for three months. But he is (if he's not a scammer) responsible for finding someone during those three months.
What can I ask????????
What?
Can I ask to get some confirmation from the landlord first?
I presume he's going to just ask me to send him the deposit to make sure I'm serious about moving in. But if I do that and he dissapears I literally have no leg to stand on.
The guy is already doing me a favour by pushing the move-in date forward a week so I don't want to sound like I don't trust him.

Yes you can.

>go to see a room
>guy is sub-letting it for three months (he's a student)
>some people are interested already
>I email saying I'll take it, and can we push the move-in date a week forward since my current lease overlaps
>he says sure and can we sort things out soon
>I don't want to just send two months rent worth of a deposit without some form of proof
>what form of proof I should ask for I don't know

How do I ask?
Something like:
"Sure I'm happy to get organized sooner rather than later. Is the landlord able to send over some form of confirmation before I pay the deposit etc?"
I don't know what I can ask for that will give me legal protection in the case of him taking my deposit and running. If he had a facebook etc I'd be less concerned but he doesn't.
OP here.
Should I ask if there's a contract I can sign or whether I can see the original contract before I send money over?
I have to reply tomorrow at the latest
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
I wouldn't give a deposit to anybody other than the landlord or agent acting for landlord.
But if your deposit is just an advance on the rent then pay him once you've moved in and have received the keys.

I think he just wants to know I'm serious since it's quite common for people to drop out and leave people hanging.
It's also common to pay a deposit before receiving the keys etc. But I want to see some form of evidence that let's me know everything is above board and that I have something to support myself with if I get scammed.
