Hey /adv/, how do I become social with the people at my office as a new employee?
The problem is my department (IT support) is somewhat lonely. It's me and one other guy. He's a nice guy, but we don't have much in common. He's a lot older than me and doesn't seem to talk to the other people at work. There are lots of people my age working here who seem really friendly. Whenever I'm not helping them out with stuff however, it's easy to get secluded. I guess it's hard being a part-time job, but I'd like to hang out with more with the other people at work. Because it kind of sucks to have job, and not be able to reap any of the social benefits.. Should I just give it time or do I actually have to be active about this shit? Been working there for about a month or so now.

I had this issue before
My remedy was get my self invited to an event out of work and become the crazy fun guy
The problem is if u push to hard 4 an invite ur the guy that tries to hard
Try organising an event urself maybe just something real simple but fun eg drinks and pool. Alcohol always helps

It is, I'm aware. Usually I'm a reserved guy myself. Actually trying to break the mold a little bit in this case, because I'm sick of not having people to hang out with.

Socialising with colleagues is a bad idea, you don't want much more than polite conversation with them, they don't want your baggage, they don't care, if you do socialise and you do something stupid, it will be shared at work.
If you want to meet people, join a hobby club or simply go out, 90% of life is showing up.
If you struggle to find a club, sign up to meetup and find groups that have things in common with you.
It is that simple.
Also I feel your pain being IT, I was for 5 years, people were only nice to me when they wanted their ticket to be sorted sooner or a new equipment order to be sped up, I literally had an entire floor (basement) to myself and rarely saw anyone, I found it easier to not socialise beyond small talk.
