As someone with a boyfriend who dresses like a homeless toddler, the most important thing is to wear what you think looks good and be confident. Girls really respond to confidence. Even if you don't care what you wear (as a lot of guys don't), think about how you would dress if you put more effort into it. Honestly the most important thing is that you commit to whatever style you're wearing and wear it with confidence.

The only rule of fashion to consider from a girl's opinion is to wear clothes that fit your body well. Some girls like hipsters, some like musicians, some like urban style, some like athletic guys. So I would find clothes that you look and feel comfortable in, because if you're confident you'll wear the clothes much better.
