the surest way to make any interaction creepy is to bring attention to how creepy it is, and you did it twice. the next worst thing is to come off as obsessed which you also did.
should've just went with "Hey, did you have a profile on POF?" and just have gone with the flow. there's no need to apologize and explain at the start of the conversation.
