It seems like I'm the smartest or most ambitious member of every group I'm part of. Every time I relax and let someone else direct, our work turns out mediocre. How the can a group work effectively if only one person is competent or only one person seems to care? I'm fed the fuck up with always being the one that keeps shit together.
simple, you kill the batman.
no but seriously the person leading the group needs to have enough of a vested interest in the successful outcome of a project to make them give a shit.
I've never done any work in group projects.
By assuming the role of leader in a group and by looking like you know what you're doing, people will want to listen to you. Use this confidence and role to influence a team to do what needs to be done. Give them simple roles and explain everything to them.

More often than not the problem is not that they don't give a shit, but that they're incompetent. The apex of their effort is often well below what I consider acceptable for college level work.
