A telephoto is a lens longer than 60mm or so, it makes far away things seem closer, and also "flattens" things in the image. A lot of non-photogs call them "zoom" lenses but that actually means something different.
The problem is that you have to be far away from a subject to fit them in the shot when using a tele, so things like cell phone cameras are always wide-angle lenses, which capture a lot of stuff in the shot but make people look like shit.
Tele lenses tend to be expensive, and usually only exist for "real" cameras, like DSLRs.

Hours in photoshop would pretty much be the only way to fake it. There's a good reason portrait photogs spend thousands of bucks on lenses.

Nah, I always like the way I look.
I'm not saying I'm handsome (shit, I'm a robot virgin for fucks sake) or being vain. I can see sometimes in picture, and in mirrors that I look unflattering.
But it's my body and I like it. Because it's mine.
Even when I look creepy as fuck because I'm tryin' not to laugh at something (which now I've seen on video, makes me look sinister as fuck) I still like it.
I think I'm just really zen when it comes to my appearance.

Ignore anything said here about lenses (while true it's not the main problem) and realize this: the picture you see in the mirror is how you're used to seeing you but it is inverted vertically. The photos you are looking at aren't which makes them seem weird to you.
Still, this is the way other people are used to seeing you so it is only weird to you.

I have a lot of female friends that look good in those kinds of photos and the trick is usually a combination of hitting the right angle to improve the display of your facial features, correct lighting and taking 1000 goddamn pictures, I'm not even kidding.
As a r9k type who recently graduated to normie-dom (and constantly has to deal with the newfound dread of being in unwanted photos), I definitely know this feel and can offer some advice:

Ideally you want to stick out your chin just a little bit, and look straight at the camera. Everyone has angles that are more flattering than others, you'll have to experiment to figure out yours. Mine, for instance, is on the right side.
>2. hair
This is a big one. some hair-styles can look perfectly fine IRL but look dogshit in photos. You also might not realise how un-symmetrical your haircut is
>3. the flip
Most camera apps flip the photo around for whatever fucking reason. Snapchat doesnt tho, I'd recommend using that.
>4. quantity
One thing I never realized was HOW MANY fucking photos normies take per photo opportunity. Like 10-20. Even the most candid looking photo is ridiculously staged

Basically this is a big part of it.The lens doesn't even scratch the surface. If you just happen to puff out your cheeks and the lighting is bad you'll look like a fucking ghoul.
Posing for a picture is also very unnatural and captures an image of yourself that you'd not normally see in a mirror where you can move to the angle you like and shift your facial features so they are just right.
I honestly think Facebook and our obsession with photographing everything is destroying many people's self-esteem. It seems like that is the way others see you because it's objective in a way, but it's a work of art and often that artist is a fucking retard.

I met a girl and thought she was she so angelic and beautiful then i saw her on Fb and thought wow. These pictures really do not do her justice at all. It think it was her aura. Can't capture that in a photo.
