I was vegan for a while, and the vegan "culture" is trash, but I'm sure you've met nice vegans - you just didn't know it, because they didn't tell you. I have had friends not know for half a year because it never came up.
It's not that all vegans are intolerable cunts, it's that you'd never know that the ones who aren't are vegan because they don't rub their lemongrass in your face.
If you look at it from their stance, though, you're morally reprehensible and they're doing good work by being obnoxious. From their point of view, they might as well be telling you, "hey, don't kill children," because the idea of not killing without necessity isn't necessarily radical to them. They're pushy because harm is coming to animals, and they just value animals differently than meat-eaters do.

Vegans usually like to eat fruits. Which happen to feed my sweet tooth so I like to eat with them and vegans usually love animals and nature. Which happen to be some of my passions. So with the 3 vegan groups I hang with we usually do outdoorsy things and visit places that have animals in display.

I mean, when you believe that the use of animal products is theft at best and straight-up murder at worst, no different from if humans were the ones being victimized, then you had bloody well BETTER be insufferable about it. Yes, I believe that the underlying assumptions surrounding "ethical veganism" are fundamentally flawed, but if you take them as given, then insufferability is really the only conclusion compatible with basic human decency.
