Anyways, I was wondering what would be the most appropriate programming language to learn as a beginner. Extra points if you can provide good sources.

Java or C.

Learn C or Java if you are good at math.

Learn Python if not.
>>
Learn the techniques to programming and you could learn any of them in a week (give or take). Try python, but don't fall into the trap of taking things for granted. Understand what the lines of code are doing and what function calls are returning. As soon as you have a grasp on programming in python, jump ship to something that doesn't hold your hand as much like java.

Ability to learn java or c isn't dependent on math ability, its just about how much your willing to learn about the computer abstractions.

Are you a codemonkey?

You misunderstood me. It takes rudimentary arithmetic ability to learn those languages. To actually do things with the language may require extensive math, depends on what you're interested in.

You'll need no math to implement a simple android app in java, but you'd need extensive math to implement a graphics library in C. Depends on what you wanna do.

Just got this beginner's book on Java from a nice anon on /g/ two days ago http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/tangy/cst112%5CText_book%2810th_ed%29.pdf

You obviously can't refute the point so you use muh webdev bogeyman.

Why don't you go back to /g/ and shit post there?

It's a board for advice. People seek advice when they have problems they don't know how to solve, and peple with problems they don't know how to solve are rarely happy.

Avoid Java and C++ as first languages. They're good for really advanced stuff, but as teaching languages they're terrible. Instead, start with something like Python or JacaScript: languages that can run the whole gamut from toy to professional scenarios, and which have strong teaching communities.

Not OP, but why should I avoid Java? Is it too difficult for beginners or is there another problem I'm unaware of?
>>
>>17015675
People don't like it because it's slow but what they don't usually say is that it natively runs multiplatform. Faster languages like C/C++ have varying OS exclusive libraries and compilers. Also Java has automatic garbage collection which makes it less good for learning about dynamically allocating memory.

Tldr; Java has certain strengths, you just need to know what that are.
