I have never owned a smartphone. I find all the choices overwhelming.
Please just tell me which one to get. It just needs to be small, run internet and apps, and text and call.

Any Moto G maybe?
Wait a bit and get the 2016 Motorola G (aka the G4) on release in a couple months.

Ask on the /csg/ on /g/. A cheap chinese phone should do you fine.

Unfortunately can't wait that long

Will it be good enough quality and will I get judged for using it in public?

Well the last Moto G is a fine phone too, it's just a shame to buy it when a better version is due to come out so soon.
Might as well pick up a used/refurb Galaxy S3 or S4 then.

I forgot to add it to the requirements, but all smartphones play music, right?
