so for the past few days I've been playing checkers online on the second monitor while lurking, and I can't win for shit, and that's quite infuriating, I've played around 200 games, and won like 7. How not to be a retarded player?

Checkers is what's known as a "solved game," which is something you should read up on. You should then read up on the algorithms used so that you can do the same and win every single game.

This. Fascinating to read up on.

Coursera occasionally offers a "games without chance" combinatorics class that is fun and the math involved is easy.

get a checkers program running while you play in the background. play on the hardest difficulty. then apply the moves the computer makes onto the player.

on a related note, what are the best sources for chess beginners? i used to play with my dad as a teen, but that was just playing around. i would like to get into it a bit more.

Humans are incredible creatures. We can do almost anything, really. Rig up a kind of device that fires a loaded gun directly at your head if you lose a game. When your life depends on it, your natural survival instincts will kick in and you will perform extraordinary feats you never thought possible. There's a reason we are at the top of the food chain.
