Are you talking about doing remote monitoring on the other family's computer/webcam or yours? If it's theirs, that's probably technically illegal. Not trying to be a lawfag, just saying that the cops might not be able to use that as evidence, and the other family may be able to press charges for invasion of privacy. If you have your kid bring a laptop or device over there, there might still be privacy issues since it's located in someone else's house. You should find out what the law is and what your rights are before trying anything. Be careful and protect your kids and yourself first and foremost.
