you ask the question knowing that no one has a solid answer. so im going to refer you to existentialism, which is varied, but here's what i took from it so far.
Life is inherently meaningless. AS such, the universe is not hostile, it is only indifferent. The only things we really have in life are choice. It may not always be a good choice, but we have choice. as such the only thing meaning can be atributed to is our choices, and when we act as if we have no choices, we stop people human and simply becomes tools that a 'god' uses to carry out his intricate boring plan.

Life can have many meanings. The correct question to ask would be "what is a meaning of life that appeals to me". The answer is to try different things.
To allow for the eventual emergence of sapient life. The purpose of sapient life is to recycle material and energy artifically what the universe cannot recycle naturally.
Ex. Hydrogen, supposedly we now think we can convert heat back into usable energy, make more stars

Buy some strange coincidence I just watched the movie on the subject, "The Zero Theorem". It didn't really answer the question but I think OP and quite a few anons here might find the main protagonist relateable.
