I've been ruining my fingers for years. I tried to quit couple times but never succeeded. Now I'm on anti-depressants and I'm discovering life once more. I want to break the habit. The problem tho is that i don't just bite the nails. I use to rip the flesh off (it let to some serious hemmorhages and skin problems). My psychiatrist doesn't give a shit and says it's my way to reduce stress. Could you help fellow fella /adv/? Pic related.

I've started as a kid and dragged it into adulthood. I often use various tools such as twizzers, knives, razor blades, scissors etc. It sorta started to feel good but i'm ashamed afterwords.

I even ripped the whole nail off a few times. I do it mostly at night. I also can't stop myself from scrathing scabs.
Here's a wild suggestion: stop.

find some other activity that reduces stress. if you're into picking stuff apart, try tearing paper into little pieces or something.
maybe try bilateral stimulation. you can google it, but one easy way to do it is to put your hands on your knees, left on left, right on right. and then just tap your knees, alternating left and right. then gradually slow down the rhythm. sounds silly but it's calming for some people.

And bind a colourful yarn around your wrist or thumb so every time you see it if you gonna do your old habit and reminds you to do the new one.
