I've done it with zero dollars.
Pack your birth certificate and social security card. Take 3 days worth of clothes - wear the same outfit two days in a row and do laundry on weekends.

You can eat and sleep for free at the shelter. Go to temp agencies, there's usually a day-by-day "labor pool" set up near the shelter in most cities.

Then get in the first available housing you can. Boarding house, motel, adult dorm, whatever. Build yourself up from there.
