The per-capita GDP in socialist command economies is far lower than in the US.
The social-democratic model of Europe, which Bernie claims he wants to implement, has been an abject failure. With the collapse of the commodities boom, Finland and Norway have been experiencing severe contractions, as most of their social programs depend upon oil wealth.
Meanwhile, the only strong economy in Europe outside the V4, Germany, stays afloat only through the complex imbalance of Euro currency. Germany enjoys an enormous export advantage, as there are no tariffs on their goods within the EEA and the nature of the Euro is to undervalue German labor. Much like China, the German currency (Euro) is artificially low compared to the health of their economy (German Deutschmark would be higher), allowing their labor to be kept cheap and their exports to be sold at greater profit. Were Germany still on the Deutschmark, it would rapidly strengthen and suffocate this trade advantage.
The V4 states enjoy advantages because they have a far lower cost of living and far lower labor prices. Poles, for instance, make far less than western Europeans in absolute terms. This lower unit cost of labor allows V4 countries to produce goods at a lower price, and the lower cost of living ameliorates the pain of low salaries.
Again: these are MIXED MARKET ECONOMIES, which Bernie mentions nonstop in his stump speeches. Hilariously, most of his policies would actually never pass in European parliaments, since his proposed capital controls are sure to strangle the profits need to fund public goods.
Command socialist economic systems, as seen in Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, pre-1990 Eastern Europe, Cuba, pre-Nixon China, etc. are even worse. All saw or continue to see glacial growth and extreme poverty.
tl;dr: social democracy model is bad, actual socialist model is worse, Sanders offers a pinch of the latter and none of the former.
