Can someone explain a single specific example of a situation in which I could possibly need "friends"?
No - but people don't get them because they need them, they do it because they want to

When you make a mistake in judgment that you dont see and your friends slap some shit in you.
Its literally the purpose of friends. Go read nicomachean ethics by aristotle so you can understand what a friend is.

>something goes wrong in your life (by your own doing, or simply that of an indifferent universe)
>your friend steps in to help.
depends on the definition of need but i once woke up in intense stomach pain. turned out my appendix was bursting. i could not drive myself to the hospital. called a friend at 5am, took me to the emergency room.
Humans are social creatures.
Say if there's a disaster where you live and you're put out of your home, like in the case of a bad flood or something. If you don't know your neighbors that well and don't have a plan already set with them in case of an emergency like that, it would help to have friends or people you know well whom you could stay with.

they help you when you're feeling suicidal and depressed. when i had friends the support was great, now i'm too sick to handle keeping track of anyone but myself and it's hard staying emotionally grounded.
When you've got a stiffy in public
