Everyone I have ever known has fallen ass backwards into a lucrative career. Friend is an accountant, zero university experience. Another friend is a welder. Never went to school, no qualifications. They all make anywhere from $20/hr to $35/hr. Now, some of you are undoubtedly reading this and thinking "But that money is shit, you can't even feed yourself on that!" Spare me. I make $11/hr. I want a good career. Just, somebody, please tell me what to go to school for, or some other way of making more than this. I get that it depends on the city, state/province, country... I don't care. Just say anything. I need an answer. I've even been to the university employed admins whose job it is to help people like me. They always ask the same thing.

"What do you like?" I like cooking, music and fucking. I'm not making any god damn money with either. Somebody please help me. I'm too old for fucking minimum wage. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO. I DON'T HAVE A DREAM JOB.
>>
>dream job
So many kids fucked up with parents and shit telling people to follow their interests into a dream job. You COULD try to target a career in what you're already passionate about, but it's wiser to find what is in demand and bring your passion to that so you can do a good job.

Keep the lights on first, enjoy your hobbies when you're not working. If you have a hobby that has careers you can "fall backwards into" (chef or something?) then maybe casually pursue that when you're off. And this isn't saying just go to work and be miserable, just take pride in what you do.

If there's a careers centre or something in your town, ask them what's in demand right now in the trades. Or research online a bit.

Nowadays getting a good job is all about luck. Knowing the right people, growing up under the right circumstances, etc.

$20-$35 an hour is a good wage. Don't let any privileged little shits tell you otherwise. I've never made more than $10 an hour in my life.
>>
Look up registered nurse classes in your area.
>>
>>16822296
>Nowadays getting a good job is all about luck. Knowing the right people
Which explains why everyone I know who has a good job has no experience or training. Accountant was hooked up by family, welder was hooked up because his dad owns the business. I know a nurse who got his job because his aunt is good friends with all the higher ups. Meanwhile me. I don't know anybody. Best job I was ever hooked up with was a minimum wage 3 month job, seasonal.
>>16822311
I'd have to move far away, the workplace hazard ratings for BC nurses are awful. Last time I checked, 50+ injuries a year due to exhaustion and toxic substances. Thanks for the suggestion though
>>
In my experience, you just need to work hard and be a cool person to the people around you. After awhile, people come to respect you; job offers just come in and you take the most well-paying one.

A friend of mine got hired at 10$ an hour in August 2013. He got promoted every year since then for being a hard worker knowing what the fuck he was doing. Right now he's making 17$ an hour and he was literally just offered a salaried position making 65k+ a year.

Who offered him that job? A coworker that had moved on and remembered him as a cool dude with a good head on his shoulders.

>I've even been to the university employed admins whose job it is to help people like me. They always ask the same thing.
Yeah, because their job is 'college adviser' so they're pretty much fucked in terms of prospects as well.

You need to pick a job that you can actually do with some success.

You might -want- to be a porn star but chances are you're just too damn ugly.
You might want to be a theoretical physicist, but you're just too damn stupid.
You might want to be a professional boxer but you're just too much of a little bitch.

You can't just pick a high-paying career and pursue that if you don't really have what it takes.

>I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO. I DON'T HAVE A DREAM JOB.
Well, since you already have a job, then why aren't you going for a middle management position? Just get promotion after promotion until they decide to make you a manager. Get a shitty business degree from some uni and aim for the low hanging fruit.
>>
>>16822248

Just look up good majors, and then suck up like he'll to any professor who seems like he can help you get a job/ Try to make other connections. People skills mean more then qualifications half the time. I'm studying computer science and half the proffessors say the good jobs care more about people skills because they are probably going to have to teach you their language they use anyway.

Wow so it isn't about hard work at all, like I said, it's about knowing people. Basically nepotism. Fuck this crony capitalist system.
>>
>>16822337
>Well, since you already have a job, then why aren't you going for a middle management position?
Because I work retail, and every retail manager I've ever known is miserable.

I get what you're saying, you have to say things like this because the average person isn't capable of being a porn star, a physicist, a boxer, etc. Although I think you're exaggerating a bit with those "career" choices, I am capable of having a strong career. Hard to put my passion into being a Best Buy "Digital Audio Manager". 9 hour days for mediocre pay while wearing an embarrassing uniform. Meanwhile my peers are doing acceptable shit like engineering, welding, nursing, accounting. I've already accepting I'm not getting hooked up. I'm really just asking if somebody was given control of my life, what career path would they put me down, knowing I don't have a passion for anything "marketable".
>>
>>16822337
(Not OP)
>work hard
Makes sense

>be a cool person
Fuck's sake, whatever happened to the positions for boring unassuming people. I'm not cool, I will never be cool, I'm put my foot in my mouth all the time.

You know what? I don't even feel cool enough to sit on the bus these days since everyone is so...I don't know how to describe it.
>>
>>16822370
>I don't even feel cool enough to sit on the bus these days since everyone is so...I don't know how to describe it.
People think it isn't cool to really like something anymore. That's the problem. The "cool" people are boring clay humans. The "boring" people are the cool ones.
>>
>>16822358
>retail aspirations suck

You forgot to mention the amount of ass you have to kiss to get to those positions AND be on the lookout for backstabbers once you get there since some fuckers it's more about the power trip than the higher (but shitty) pay.
>>
>>16822376
>cliche
Look, I am not delusional, I am fully aware of how dull and dry I am.

It's almost ironic that sometimes despite looking dull and unassuming I stick out. Like one time I was on the underground coming home from work and almost everyone on the tube was covered in colouful powders and I was in my bland uniform.
>>
>>16822349
Welcome to America. It's been like this for a while. You see those college kid STEM majors berating humanities students all the time on other boards? I work as a government chemist and have a BA in philosophy. I got the job through an older guy I used to drink with at the bar and learned how to do this shit in a month by watching a coworker.
>>
>>16822394
This is what normie-privilege looks like
>>
>>16822349
>Wow so it isn't about hard work at all
No, it's very much about hard work. This guy was an absolute madman to work with, and even when he was acting like a little bitch we all knew we could count on him. He's the kind of person you want on your team because you know that he'll get shit done even if you're being lazy.

He just happened to also be pretty funny and easy to get along with (most of the time). So when this other guy was looking for people to offer big money, he went for the people who had earned his trust and respect through their hard work AND their personality.

Hard working people can be dicks.
Lazy people and be really fun and cool.
Success in life demands balance.
>>
>>16822393
Yeah, but that isn't interesting. Who wants something from a person that everybody else does? It's a paradigm thing
>>
>>16822404
Are you being obtuse on purpose?
>>
>>16822370

By cool he means not a dick. in other words be nice to people and show you work well with others. That's about 50% of any job and the 50% everyone fucks up.
>>
>>16822399
>developing social skills should be looked down upon.

Been here much longer than you, tripfag-kun.
>>
>>16822403
Or you can be both and it still doesn't matter. Trust me, people LOVE spending time with me. They love talking to me. And I'm a very hard worker, but I'm sure as hell not getting calls for $20 an hour jobs. Why not? Because I like to do my own thing and don't try to build networks. People are selfish as fuck, if you don't give them attention then they will just turn to people who do. You can't be your own man in this world and succeed anymore.
>>
>I'm really just asking if somebody was given control of my life, what career path would they put me down, knowing I don't have a passion for anything "marketable".

It's nearly impossible to just tell someone a career to go down. People are not created equal. There are some jobs that some people will just never be able to do. I don't know anything about you or your skills so it's hard to arbitrarily pick something.

Part of the problem is that you're already on a career path. If you're hard working and charismatic you could move on to management and make decent money.

>Because I work retail, and every retail manager I've ever known is miserable.

Fine, but realize that you're turning down good money because you don't want to do the work. So you're already slapped away an opportunity to do better.

If you have skills, apply them.
If you don't have skills, then find a low skill job and move up the corporate ladder.
If you can't do that, then find a way to be happy without money.
>>
>>16822436
>I like to do my own thing and don't try to build networks
>People are selfish as fuck

Well that explains a lot. You're not playing the game of life the right way.

I'm not saying you can't succeed by playing by your own rules, but it's just not an option for most people.
>>
>>16822429
I am nice, though passive may be a little more accurate. I think he does mean cool though in the sense of being social and stuff.
>>
>>16822436
You're screaming self-defeat here. If you are convinced that you're never going to go anywhere, then of course you're not.

I know several people making 40-60k almost entirely on always being that guy you know can make things work. And the rest? Being able to sell themselves. No one buys the product they don't know about, no one hires the guy he doesn't know about either.
>>
>Nowadays getting a good job is all about luck.
>Nowadays

Do you really have enough experience regarding the last century of employment trends to make a statement like that?

What do you really think the world was like 20, 30, 50 years ago?
>>
>>16822458
'Cool' here mostly means pleasant to work with, and that can be done a few ways. You can either be the guy that makes work smooth and easy(you want this guy working on the important projects), the guy that keeps everyone on track and working together smoothly(this is the guy you want to be your foreman), or just the guy that makes work more bearable(doesn't actually have a whole lot going for him,but sometimes gets dragged along anyway cause the other 2 would rather not be without)
>>
I never made any networks or connections and I still got a $80k job. I don't even have any friends, I just come home and fap to doujinshi everyday.

It's not the 1980s anymore where some rich uncle would set you up with a position in the bank
>>
>>16822522
>$80k

What job and how?
>>
>>16822537
Imaginary job through a non-existent process.

I guarantee that Anon is full of it.
>>
>>16822537
Just normal investment bank graduate position

Just get a degree in a STEM subject, git gud with computers and maybe learn a foreign language and I guarantee you will get a good job.
>>
>>16822553
>bullshit

I guess it would be too good to be true.

I really don't know what to do anymore.

Life insurance doesn't pay out if you commit suicide, right?
>>
>>16822566
Got a 2.2 in maths, doubt that's enough though.

How'd you get in with, I'm assuming, no personality?
>>
>>16822431
Debatable and I strongly doubt it
>>
>>16822589
Not him, but pulling off the 'I'm not arrogant, I really am that good.' attitude in your interview will go a long way. Especially if you've got good grades and a decent portfolio.

Actually, that's a pretty good interview rule, brag on yourself and then give an example of you being slightly awesome. Just remember that they do background checks, so contain your bullshit.
>>
>>16822597
>I doubt it

Why would you be proud of being on 4chan for years?
>>
>>16822620
Why are you putting words in my mouth? Is that a rhetorical statement?
>>
>>16822589
2:1 in math, got good with computers, one foreign language.
>>
>>16822620
Some of us feel a perverse sense of accomplishment from our autism.
>>
>>16822616
>good grades

I just have a 2.2 in maths, from a good uni though I don't know how much that matters.

>portfolio

Of what, my videogame collection?
>>
>>16822632
Only got a half out of three.

I'm so close to just slitting my wrists. I can't take my wageslave job for much longer
>>
You guys realize that money doesn't actually make you that happy thought right?

It's just gonna be a small increment over your current satisfaction levels, if anything. So don't fret about it and just work hard at what you like.
>>
>>16822666
> money doesn't actually make you that happy thought right?

That's something only poor people say
>>
>>16822666
Fuck you.

Some of us are at the bottom of heap anyway, a little more money won't hurt.
>>
>>16822674
So work hard and get it

Stop whinging because you didn't plan your life and make sacrifices enough in advance.
>>
>>16822636
>Of what, my videogame collection?
If you made them, then absolutely. Even if you have no intention of getting into game design. Unless they're H-games. A bit of a stigma there.

>I just have a 2.2 in maths, from a good uni though I don't know how much that matters.
>maths
Sorry, don't know a whole lot about the effects of school reputation in britbongistan, but in burgerland it helps. Not as much as you might hope, but it does help. You can, to some extent, piggyback on your schools rep if any middle/upper management went to your school.
>>
>>16822666
>You guys realize that money doesn't actually make you that happy thought right?

No, but it buys me food and a house and that makes me very happy.
>>
>>16822687

Good goyim keep sacrificing you'll reach the top eventually

I'm not really aiming for the top. It's too much effort for diminishing returns in happiness the money brings.

>>16822691
You don't need to buy a house. I never want to buy a house. Too much trouble and would tie me down.
>>
>>16822714
Yeah, I've been homeless. Not doing that again.
>>
>>16822248
>has fallen ass backwards into a lucrative career.
More like worked they ass off for that. What did you do in the meanwhile?

Also you should obviously expand your horizons if cooking, music and fucking is all you like. Sounds pretty deadbeat already, mate.

>>16822337
>you just need to work hard and be a cool person to the people around you
This so much. With focus on the latter. Being a person people want to work with is just as important as doing your work good.

>>16822296
>Nowadays getting a good job is all about luck.
Luck is a small factor after all the relevant ones.
>>
>>16822728
>focus on the latter
How? I have no friends. I cannot keep a conversation going besides from hot topics.
>>
>>16822742
Practice. Most people weren't born with great social skills.
