What does obscene mean in a legal sense? I have researched whether lolicon/shota is legal in my country (United States). It appears to be so, stating it is legal unless obscene. I have a generous porn collection, with images including penetration, which I am beginning to believe could be considered illegal and would like to know if I should delete it. I am also a furfag if it matters. Most of my collection is furry, though I do often enjoy cartoon characters like Gwen from Ben 10 and animu like Nichijou rule 34.
I have considered deleting it before, and in fact have several times, but ended up rehoarding it again and again. Being illegal however would help convince me to stay away from it. I don't believe porn is worth ruining my life over

Obscene is rarely specifically defined in obscenity laws, in part because the definition or examples would often make the law itself obscene.
Most laws contain one or more of these phrases - "designed to arouse lust or sexual feelings", "no redeeming artistic merit" "likely to cause offense" and "violates community standards of decency"
The last two are the most troublesome because they're so subjective. It has not been uncommon in the past for authorities to choose a particularly conservative and religious town to prosecute in, even if the material came from elsewhere, just to be more certain of violating community standards.
Take some heart from thee fact that, unlike kiddy porn, mere possession of other kinds of porn is very rarely prosecuted, only making and distributing. So what's on your hard disc is probably safe, but what you share with a friend might not be.

Thank you for the response. Does all porn live underneath that umbrella or is it only lolicon? I live in a particularly religious region of the US, though it is good to know it is rare. I was specifically reading the wikipedia article on the subject which lists various cases where people went to prison for anime incest and such porn and it made me paranoid.

I like to think that since Loli shows lewd acts with a protected class (minors), that it would be considered obscene. CP is where it's best to use common sense and just delete
