1) how do I know if a toe is broken or just going to bruise? It stings when I put pressure on it but when I don't it's just dull pain
2) if it is broken, how can I function well tommorow while wageslaving with a broken toe?

Anyway, for a confirmation, go to a doctor, schedule an x-ray. Sorry OP, not a doctor and they're the ones who can really help you right now.

If it was broken, you'd know. It'd hurt like a bitch.
Do the standard treatment for getting the swelling down (anti-infammitory, elevation, iceing, etc). If it's still super painful the next day it might be broken. Or once the swelling is down see if it looks crooked compared to your other toe.
If it's broken you might want to see a doctor. You can't do a whole lot for a broken toe, they usually just set it if necessary and tape it to a neighbour toe while it heals.
Either way it will suck to go to work with it. If you do the doctor route you can score a doctor's note.
