Preparations? Just fuck. Usually they say a baby can take up to 1 year to conceive but sometimes longer or shorter than that so just fuck like bunnies. There are apps, tests and what not that can help you with more fertile days of the month so that your luck is going to be better but it's not really super accurate.
How long is the process? Like I said, normally a year. In which both of you will most likely get frustrated at each other after some time if there is still no signs of a baby. After that roughly 9 months obviously, before you will have 3–6 years with no sleep and less (read as no) sex, and then roughly 10–15 years when your kid is going to hate you/blame you for everything that went wrong while trying to take your money. Have fun.
Oh, it may also be good to get you both tested so you know that you are both actually capable of having a child, purely physically that is. Personally I do not believe anyone should have a child at 16/17 years of age as there are most likely some dreams that your wife wants to do but hasn't come clean with yet.
