>I teach guitar lessons
>I give all of my students songs to look up to listen to (if they ask for them)
>I have a student who is twelve
>The topic of metal music came up and she asked for a song to listen to
>I thought back to what metal songs i listened to at twelve and recommended her "Six" by All That Remains
>I did a quick check on my iPhone to make sure it didn't have explicit next to the title and then i wrote it down for her.
>I looked it up tonight and it has the word "damn" as part of the hook.
>should i email her mother and have her tell her NOT to listen to it? thus drawing attention to my mistake.
>OR should i just let it go and if questioned about it, claim i meant to recommend "This Calling" which is off of the same album and contains no swear words

Am I over thinking this?

The family is Indian, by the way, if that matters.

Let it slide, nobody pays any attention to anything or anybody, and nobody cares.

If that Indian kid's parents are tolerant enough to let them listen to metal, they're tolerant enough for 'damn' as a lyric.

Just recommend her another song
"Damn" is not that rude btw
>>

Well I won't see her for a week.

I guess it's probably no big deal. But I would really hate to upset her family
>>
I honestly don't understand why the word damn would be an issue at all.

Either way don't lie on the strange of chance that you're confronted about it.

as a teacher in a middle school classroom i would firstly say dont fucking worry about it. she's already listening to metal. she probably dresses like kind of a goth, and her parents are enabling her (paying you) to learn rock guitar, which more conservative parents might see as subversive. if the parents were "those types" you'd probably gather that already, you'd have already had that talk with them, or you'd figure out that the student is only allowed to listen to christian music or something.

also, open your head. there's plenty of metal that doesnt have explicit lyrics, and plenty more that doesnt have lyrics at all.

secondly, just in general, with all your students, consider the types of parents they have. also ask your students (doesn't have to be a SERIOUS conversation) about what their parents think of this type of music, or more "edgy" content.
chances are the student sees you more of a friend than a stuffy ass teacher, like they have in their boring classrooms.

Well she had never heard any metal before. She just asked about it.

And I really didn't Think there were any swear words in "Six". But I hadn't heard it in a while
>>

and never EVER fucking lie to parents. "oh i meant to recommend a different song."

take responsibility and be professional. in the future if you wanna super serve your customers (studenats and their parents) be open and forthcoming with them. ask them what they want their student to learn, and if theres any sort of concerns they have and stuff.
don't just collect the paycheck and fuck off. this also might enable to charge a bit of a premium, if your service is worth it, and youre good at what you do.
Public Relations stuff can go a long way.

its fine, dude. you'll be okay. she's 12 and developing her self identity. if in doubt maybe go for something more mainstream, or simple anyway, or more "classic" metal music, because chances are she's not tobin abassi, and shes trying to establish a personal identity as much as she is learning to play guitar.
>>
when I was 12 I used swear words regularly
I watched porn and masturbated
Listened to hard metal
My parents are fucking doctors and didn't give a shit

is my country fucked up for all this being normal or is OP just making big deal out of noting?
