There's nothing inherently wrong with being selfish to a certain extent. It's a biological drive that keeps us alive. Survival of the fittest and all that.

That being said, understand that you can't really have meaningful relationships with others unless you're willing to make at least a few sacrifices here and there. The harsh reality of life is that people aren't usually willing to spend their time on you unless you benefit them in some way. That's fine as long as you benefit as well. Find people who offer a decent give/take ratio and they'll be your best friends.

This, of course, is far easier said than done.

according to my boss, if you are able to ask the question and seriously consider it, you arent actually selfish. you take care of yourself to maybe a high degree but if you stop to ask 'am i selfish' than you consider other people to some degree.
