I tried this thread earlier but occidentally broke the rules, and was kindly advised by a mod to delete thread and try again

I have just bought this laptop, second hand but never been used for 460.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-15-j142na-i7-4700MQ-Graphics-Windows/dp/B00KU2K0RG

The only difference is it has a solid state drive rather than a harddrive.

I am a car/motorbike guy so im not so great with computers.

Did i get a reasonable enough deal?

How do i maintain/ look after and keep it running at optimum performance.

All i can offer in return is advice with cars and motorbikes ( 2 strokes and motorcross bikes are my speciality)

Keep your downloads folder pretty clean.
Download CCleaner and use it every few days.
Uninstall programs you don't use - especially if they are stupid ones that came with the computer.
Stick to streaming porn instead of downloading it.
Don't run any .exe file unless you really trust where you downloaded it.

thanks at least we have one good answer...

Im just wondering if anyone can elaborate a little?

What actually causes laptops/computers to slow down over time

what do i need to worry about ?

Is anti virus even necessary or will sensible browsing and not downloading anything but good torrents with good reviews from good websites keep me safe?

Generally what causes my pc to slow down over time is the general accumulation of junk that windows manages to do.
You sound like you keep your shifty stuff on the DL that's good keep it that way, verify anything and everything and always be sceptical it keeps you on your toes.
Do updates manually (Win 7 and prev don't know about win8) only download the essential updates, never install browser extensions unless you decided you want it, read the provided information from an install wizard, and install only the stuff you need.
Background services from installed software can clog up, maintain the registry and task scheduler.
If you are doing really questionable stuff use a VM (virtual machine) and private VPN's (note plural). (beware of red pill, blue pill)
>on the internet everyone knows your a monkey with a keyboard.
Most important of all keep your folders organised, I cannot stress this point enough. Use folder names that mean something to you and always keep things in a folder or somewhere you can expect it to be (Pic related). Don't store stuff in random places on the hard drive, and minimise duplicates on the same storage device. This makes it easier to bail all your important info when you have to.
Since you have an SSD its probably small, so get a external hard drive (~1TB) for all your large files and folders.
Don't worry about it T.B.H keep it sensible, simple and safe and you would have nothing to worry about.
A word on antivirus I never use it, the only run-ins with viruses I had was because of my own stupidity, but if you insist get Microsoft security essentials (its free and works adequately for the average user).

It's a decent computer for the money. You're not going to be maxing out the latest game but it'll run most anything. Get a decent antivirus and use your head when browsing.

I found a 69 cb350 in decent running condition. How decent of a first bike is this? Can I get it to do 65 or 70 mph for ten or twenty miles at a stretch without feeling a death wobble? Will I get bored of it like people do with rebel 250s?

its a honda cb, the honda cb (citybike) range are some of the most reliable bikes out there, as long as you dont exceed say 2/3 of peak rpm it should cruise safely enough at 65-70 but if the bike itself its having a death wobble, check wheel bearings ( life wheel off ground and treyand move it side to side between forks/swingarm any movement is bad)

yes you will get bored of it, unless you just like the look and style, you will find it depresing in under 3 months. especially when a 16 yr old on a aprillia rs125 (yes only 125cc) blasts past you doing 120mph

If the laws in your area restrict your capacity buy 2stroke if not the two best smaller cc bikes is the yamaha R6 and the honda cbr600 r babyblade

does this answer your question

Thanks for the more comprehensive reply, a lot of it seems sort of like common sense though, was i just mad for thinking there was so much more to it

I haven't actually bought it yet, just found it online. No restrictions on capacity (didn't know that was a thing).

Just to clarify - 460 of what? I'd usually assume USD (in which case you robbed the guy blind), but as it's a .co.uk address in the link you might be talking GBP (in which case it was still a really good deal).

The first thing you ought to do, IMO at least, is go and buy at least one external drive. Keep your program files that you use often - windows, office, any games you play etc - on the internal SSD as it has much faster load times, and store all your media - films, photo's, nazi themed animal porn - on the external HDD/s, which have slower load times but offer much more GB/£. Also be sure to make a backup of your internal drive regularly, at least once a week at minimum, as SSD's are a lot more prone to magically turning in to expensive paperweights than HDD's are. Don't skimp on the external drive either. The difference between a brandless made in china one and a good quality one like a samsung is about thirty quid, which is a small price to pay for not loosing the twelve thousand photographs you took in the last three years with your now-dead wife, or worse still, all your rare pepe's.

A CB350 would pretty much be useless to anyone who wasn't solely insterested in classic motoring. what is it that your looking for in a bike

For classic motorcycling as in 69-89 era the best bikes are the yamaha RD/ RDLC series they came in 125, 250, 350 and 500, and Suzuki's RG/ RGV bikes, which come in similar sizes and up to a 750 triple
