My roommate has this thing with incense. He fucking loves it, and pretty much has a stick burning every day at this point. Unfortunately, that shit bothers my throat and eyes. I've asked him to tone it down, but it just hasn't happened yet.
Before asking him to just stop it, does anyone have any ideas of how to compromise on this?

Explain to him properly that this is a health issue. Explain that you would never ask him to stop doing something just because you don't like it. Explain to him that this is damaging your quality of life and that you wouldn't hesitate to stop doing something which would endanger his health.

Incense triggers my asthma and allergies, so I feel you. If he is renting from you, you should have no problem asking him to stop.
Tell him the truth. Tell him you are having an allergic reaction to it and it's painful. You can apologize and be polite, but just make sure it stops.
